Just to find one person and that person was me.
Timothea closed her eyes and remained silent for a long moment.
“Okay, throw it away. Elmer, from now on, I will marry you honestly and never mention Bond again.”
Elmer smiled, took her hand and gently placed it against his face, like a dependent kitten.
“I knew you would get over this. We will have our own lives, our own marriages and... our own children.”
Elmer had changed into his newly bought sexy pajamas tonight and even sprayed himself with perfume.
Before he could throw himself into her arms, Timothea’s phone rang.
The assistant called, his voice excited. “Ms. Johnston, we’ve found news about Bond!”
Timothea’s face suddenly changed, her grip on the phone tightened and she abruptly stood up. “What did you say?”
Even I, floating nearby, was shocked.
I’d been dead for five years. How could they possibly find any news about me?
Could they have discovered... where I was buried?
Before I could react, a gust of wind blew by and Timothea, clutching her coat, flung open the door and rushed out, leaving behind Elmer’s anxious cries.
But no one paid any attention. I followed suit.
Timothea quickly found the assistant.
The assistant panted. “Ms. Johnston, I saw Mr.... oh no, Bond. He’s not doing well now, though. He’s working as a cleaner in a hotel.”
Timothea’s face was grim, but she didn’t react. She spoke succinctly. “Take me there now.”
After ten years together, I knew all too well how Timothea’s body reacted when she was nervous.
She was tense now; she must have been waiting for this moment for five years. Seeing the assistant’s hesitation, Timothea interrupted impatiently, “Forget it, give me the address, I’ll find it myself.”
After receiving the address, Timothea rushed into the hotel like a madman, searching every floor and every bathroom for me.
Only on the 22nd floor did she see the man, hunched over, cleaning the toilet.
Timothea’s body stiffened, her breathing becoming rapid.
“Bond!” She rasped and sneered as she grabbed the man’s wrist.
“You took my money and left with a divorce agreement and now you’re in this mess. Do you regret it?”
Her eyes were bloodshot as she stared at the back of the man’s head.
But the moment he turned, I couldn’t help but smile bitterly.
It turned out to be a misunderstanding.
Seeing a completely unfamiliar face, Timothea was startled, the light in her eyes dimming.
“Sorry. I recognized the wrong person.”
Coincidentally, in the five years since my death... Whenever news about me faded, new gossip would surface.
The first year, someone said I left behind a divorce agreement, bought a ticket and left the country to marry a dark-skinned woman.
Later, in the hospital, Timothea crushed a cup with her bare hands upon hearing the news.
Before she could even recover and be discharged, she had her assistant buy a plane ticket and immediately left for the country.
Following the clues from that rumor, she searched everywhere she could, but ultimately returned empty-handed.
But from then on, whenever she heard news about the dark-skinned woman, she would frown and pay close attention.
The second year, someone said they saw me checking in at the Terria Tower while traveling abroad.
Upon hearing the news, Timothea immediately canceled an important meeting and bought a ticket to fly there, but still found nothing.
The third year, someone saw me working as a male model at a foreign club.
The fourth year, the fifth year...
Every time there was news, Timothea would be the first to rush to find me. This time, she thought it was real.
But she hadn’t realized she’d mistaken him.
Timothea returned home, enraged and smashed a cup.
“How could such a mistake happen?”
The assistant trembled with fear.
“Ms. Johnston, it’s all my fault for not investigating thoroughly. I saw him using Bond’s phone and his face bore a resemblance to Mr. Dawson, so I assumed he was… the man in the wedding photo in your office.”
The assistant’s voice trailed off.
Timothea’s expression softened slightly. She immediately realized the assistant wasn’t to blame.
The assistant had only been hired a few years earlier and she had never met Bond, so it was normal for her to have mistaken him.
She took a deep breath, slumped in her office chair and fell into deep thought.
“Bond, what on earth are you playing? Are you deliberately keeping me hanging like this? Does it make you feel more accomplished?”
Timothea pounded her fist on the wall.
It took a long time for her to recover. “Just wait. Whether you’re dead or alive, I’ll find you and let you see for yourself—How did I abandon you, just like you abandoned me?”
It was already early morning when Timothea returned.
The lights were still on and Elmer, eyes red, sat on the sofa, waiting for her.
At the sound of the door being pushed open, Elmer threw himself into her arms, aggrieved.
“Timothea, where have you been?”
A flicker of guilt flashed in her eyes and she grasped Elmer’s hand. “Elmer, didn’t I tell you not to wait for me? Go to sleep first.”
But Elmer remained stubborn. “Have you been looking for Bond again? Timothea, it’s not that I don’t want you to remember him, it’s just that you’ve forgotten. He left when you were most desperate and took all the money you saved. He doesn’t deserve forgiveness at all!”
Elmer’s eyes were red and he was shouting at the top of his lungs.
“Have you forgotten what you said to me when you woke up five years ago? You said you would forget that man and marry me.”
“I haven’t forgotten.” Timothea frowned slightly. “I know I had nothing back then and it was you who used all your savings to treat my illness and donated your bone marrow. Elmer, I will marry you. But... Bond is still a knot in my heart. I want to understand why he was so cruel to leave without saying anything.”
Looking at Timothea’s face, filled with pain and confusion, my heart ached.
It was a pity that I was already dead.
I couldn’t make a sound and I couldn’t tell her the reason.
I could only rely on this resentment and my remaining consciousness to watch everything unfold. That night, I watched with my own eyes as Timothea carefully placed the watch she’d ordered for me five years ago on Elmer’s wrist.
Then she stood on tiptoe and kissed him.
“Elmer, I know how much you’ve loved me these past five years. Don’t worry, our wedding will go ahead next month.”
Elmer’s expression brightened with reassurance.
“Then just promise me you won’t look for Bond again. After we get married, we’ll have a child and we’ll live happily as a family of three…”
With beautiful dreams in his heart, Elmer peacefully fell asleep in Timothea’s arms.
As he fell asleep, Timothea suddenly remembered something and got up and went downstairs.
She called her assistant. “I remember you said that the hotel cleaner was using Bond’s phone?”
The next day, Timothea received all the information about the hotel’s cleaner.
“Harper, male, 32 years old…” The assistant read the information.
Timothea’s brows furrowed as she listened.
“Ms. Johnston, we’ve already investigated. Harper has no connection to Bond. They probably don’t know each other.”
Timothea’s face remained expressionless. She tapped her fingers on the table and said calmly, “I understand. You can leave first.”
From then on, Timothea’s attention began to focus more and more on Harper.
One day, while leaving to get off work, Harper was blocked in an alley by several drunken men and nearly bullied.
Timothea, sitting in a black luxury car, watched expressionlessly.
Just as they were about to pull off Harper’s pants, a fist struck them, knocking them over.
Harper stared at her, still terrified. “It was you? Thank you for saving me…”
Timothea said nothing, took off her coat and covered him. “Where’s home? I’ll take you there.”
Harper shook his head bitterly. “No, I don’t have money for rent, so I’m sleeping in the hotel’s cleaning room.”
Timothea looked at him in surprise. Half an hour later, she handed Harper a bank card.
“Don’t work at the hotel anymore. Come be my assistant.”
Harper realized what was happening and was immediately overjoyed.
From that day on, she became Timothea’s personal assistant.
Her clothes were ironed by Harper.
Her life plans were arranged by Harper.
And yet, he did it better than anyone else.
But that day, Timothea came home early and leaned against the doorway, watching Harper clean out his closet.
As she watched, her expression changed.
“How do you know how to tie a bow like that?”
Timothea rushed over and grabbed the tie tightly, his hands shaking uncontrollably.
In his memory, only one person could do that: me, Bond.
Back in our humble rental apartment, I always used this method to amuse Timothea. Even the string used to tie the cake had to be tied with this kind of bow.
Timothea’s eyes flushed and she gripped Harper’s shoulders firmly.
“Tell me the truth, what’s your relationship with Bond? Where is he?”
Harper shook his head in confusion and fear.
“Ms. Johnston, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I learned how to tie a bow online.”
Timothea was completely unwilling to accept this.
Her intuition told her that Harper must be connected to Bond, but she hadn’t found out what that relationship was.
Timothea stared at the man in front of her.
It was as if she could see through his face to the person behind him.
I floated in midair, a mixture of emotions.
Harper and I looked about 50% similar, but there were some differences in our gestures.
But if he was deliberately imitating me, someone who wasn’t particularly familiar with me wouldn’t be able to tell.
For example, his expression and demeanor at that moment made Timothea feel complicated and even the strength of her grip weakened considerably. As the two stared at each other, an ambiguous atmosphere gradually developed and Harper’s cheeks grew hot.
“Ms. Johnston, are you thinking of me as someone’s replacement? Do you love that man very much?”
Timothea’s eyes grew clearer and she was about to let go.
Harper’s face suddenly showed pain and he fell back.
“I feel so dizzy, Ms. Johnston…”
Timothea held him firmly.
Elmer, who had just arrived, witnessed this scene. He froze in place, his face pale and the teacup in his hand clattered to the ground, shattering into pieces.
