It came so fast!
I didn't respond directly. "Mom, what did you say? The signal is bad. I can't hear you. Hello?"
I then hung up and called Camron, giving a vague explanation that Mom said something had happened to Miranda, playing the innocent party.
Ten minutes later, Camron called, his voice filled with grief. "Miranda and the child had an accident. They're at the central hospital. I'm on my way back."
I feigned shock. "Oh no! How did this happen?!"
I arrived at the hospital slowly, only to see doctors coming out of the operating room.
"The condition of the mother is critical. The child might not survive. Please sign the consent form."
"What... What?!" Katie's eyes were widening. Then she collapsed and started wailing, "How did things turn out like this? My grandson. I can't go on living!"
She tried to slam her head against the wall, but I interrupted her.
"Mom, didn't I tell you to follow Miranda? Why didn't you stop her from riding Frisbee Ride?"
Camron shot a murderous look, and Katie turned pale, too scared to turn around.
Camron roared, "Is that true?!"
"I... I did follow her, but the amusement park was too crowded, I... I lost track of her," Katie clung to Camron's leg. "Camron, I didn't mean it. You know I have a poor sense of direction. If I had known it..."
She was kicked aside by Camron, her heavy body rolling on the floor.
Camron declared, "If anything happens to the child, I won't let you off the hook."
The surgery lasted a long time.
At one point, the doctor came out and said, "The mother needs a blood transfusion. According to regulations, relatives must donate the same amount of blood to get it from the blood bank. Who will do it?"
Katie grabbed me quickly. "She should go. She's young and healthy."
I knew it!
Katie never failed to disappoint me.
I rolled my eyes, saying, "I'm on my period and have a cold."
I clutched my chest, acting like a weak patient.
The nurse said, "Nonsense! You can't donate blood while on your period or sick. Both of you, come with me."
Katie, who was extremely biased towards boys, could never bear to let her precious son donate blood, so she donated 400cc herself. She came out feeling weak and nearly slipped on the floor which was wet after cleaning.
"Camron, help me. I'm feeling faint."
Camron, gritting his teeth, replied, "Miranda and the child are still in danger inside, fighting for their lives. You just donated some blood. Don't pretend to be weak!"
Katie's eyes filled with tears, wanting to cry but not daring to make a sound.
After about half an hour, Miranda was wheeled out. Her face was extremely pale. Camron rushed up. "How... How's the child?"
The doctor sighed, "You're still young. You'll have more kids in the future."
At five months, the baby was stillborn and had to be induced. Camron demanded to see the baby. After coming out of the operating room, he was at a loss.
Katie grabbed the doctor's collar. "You're lying to us, right? The baby should be fine at five months. It's stable by then. How could it be so fragile!"
Camron shoved Katie roughly. "You killed it. Are you satisfied now?!"
At over sixty, Katie couldn't handle such a shock. I heard a crack, and her coccyx seemed to have broken.
"Did you know it was a boy? You killed my son!"
Katie broke down, slapping herself repeatedly. "It's my fault! I'm so sorry! I killed my grandson! My grandson!"
Katie fainted.
Of course, she was just acting.
I rushed forward and patted her face, "Mom, please wake up!
"Mom, how can I live without you?"
Katie's eyes rolled back in pain, but she dared not wake up.
Not surprisingly, she was trying to escape the consequences, even though it was shameful.
Finally, the medical staff intervened and took her away.
Back in the ward, as soon as Miranda woke up, she cried out to Camron with tearful eyes, "Honey, the baby…"
Camron's eyes were swollen out of cry. Before he could speak, I jumped in, grabbed Miranda's hand, and began wailing, "Miranda, it's all my mom's fault! If she had stopped you from riding Frisbee Ride, my nephew wouldn't be gone, and you wouldn't be lying here.
"It's normal to lack experience with the first pregnancy. My mom had two, but she didn't care enough. She's the one who should bear the fault, Miranda. I'll apologize on her behalf.
"Your... Nephew?"
"Yes, it was a son, our family's pride!"
Miranda went wild, crying and screaming in the hospital room. Camron tried to stop her, but it was the doctor who finally sedated her to calm her down.
When Katie woke up, she was immediately hit on the head with a water cup thrown by Miranda. "Murderer! Get out! Get out!"
Camron shielded Miranda, his voice cold, "You killed our child. How dare you come here?! You're the one who should die!"
Katie, stunned, collapsed to her knees. "Miranda, Camron, I'm sorry. It's my negligence. If you want to hit or scold me, I'll take it.
"But please give me a chance to make amends!
"I've got a plan..."
She began outlining a plan, and I was stunned by her shamelessness!
Even more infuriating was that, once again, she intended to sacrifice me.
It was laughable. There was no way I would let her have her way!
I decided to give them a surprise.
