After My Mate Forced the Mark, I Destroyed Him Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, except it didn't break because it was never whole.

I stood at the altar with both packs watching, and Morgan's scent wrapped around me like a promise—pine and leather, clean and strong. I'd spent three months convincing myself it meant fated. That the pull in my chest when he stood close was the Moon Goddess answering six years of silence.

The ceremony reached the marking moment. Morgan's hand came to rest on my shoulder. His fingers pressed down, and I tilted my head to bare my neck the way every Luna before me had done.

Then his eyes went flat.

"Bare your neck," he said, and it wasn't a request.

The Alpha tone hit me like a fist to the sternum. My knees buckled. My spine arched backward against every screaming instinct, muscles locking into obedience my mind had no part in. I tried to pull back. My body wouldn't move. My neck stretched wider, skin taut, and I couldn't even turn my head away.

Morgan's teeth sank in.

The crowd erupted. Cheers rolled through the clearing like thunder. Someone threw wildflowers. I felt the tear of skin, the wet heat of blood on my collarbone, and my eyes stayed open, staring at nothing.

Across the aisle, my father's hand crushed the arm of his chair. The wood splintered under his grip. His Alpha aura flared—just for a second, a flash of protective rage—but ceremony protocol held him in place. You don't interrupt a marking. Not even if something is wrong. Especially not if something is wrong.

Morgan pulled back. His mouth was red. The mark on my neck throbbed, a dull ache that pulsed in time with my heartbeat.

He smiled at the crowd.

I felt nothing.

---

The morning after, I woke in Morgan's quarters with the mark still burning on my throat.

He was already awake, standing by the window with his back to me. I sat up slowly. The sheet pooled at my waist. I'd worn the thin slip Carla had left folded on the chair—white silk, delicate, the kind of thing meant to be removed.

It was still on.

"Morgan," I said quietly.

He didn't turn.

I stood. Crossed the room. Put my hand on his shoulder, and he flinched like I'd burned him.

"We should—" I stopped. Started again. "The bond needs to be completed."

I wasn't asking because I wanted to. I was asking because an incomplete bond was a half-claim, a political vulnerability, and if I could just finish it maybe the wrongness in my chest would smooth over into something bearable.

Morgan finally looked at me. His jaw was tight. "Not now."

"When?"

"I said not now."

The door opened.

Carla swept in without knocking, her smile bright and terrible. "Good morning, Luna." She said the title like it was already mine, like the ceremony had settled everything. "I hope you slept well."

I pulled my robe closed. "We were just—"

"Discussing the bloodline transfer, I hope." Carla set a leather portfolio on the table. "It's a simple process. You'll sign over your Silverpine claim to Morgan's line. We'll file it with the Lycan Council by week's end. Very tidy."

I stared at her. "I'm not signing anything."

Her smile didn't move. "Of course you are, dear. You're mated now. Your claim passes to your Alpha. That's how it works."

"That's not how it works unless I consent."

"You consented yesterday." She tapped the portfolio. "In front of two packs. The mark on your neck says you consented."

My hand went to my throat. The mark was there, raised and tender. But something about it felt wrong—too shallow, too cold.

"I didn't consent to this."

Morgan moved. One second he was by the window. The next he had me pinned against the wall, his forearm across my collarbones, his face inches from mine.

"You will never leave Ironmaw," he said, and the Alpha tone threaded through every word like wire. "You will sign the transfer. You will smile when the Council asks if you're happy. And you will stop questioning me."

My muscles locked. My lungs squeezed. I couldn't move, couldn't breathe, couldn't do anything but obey the command layered into his voice.

Carla's heels clicked toward the door. "I'll leave the paperwork here. Sign it by Friday, Luna. Or we'll have the Council declare you barren and wolfless, and your father's pack will need a new Alpha anyway."

The door closed.

Morgan held me there for three more seconds. Then he let go and walked out.

I slid down the wall. Sat on the floor. Put my hand over the mark on my neck and felt it throb—cold, incomplete, wrong.

My field journal was in my bag across the room. I crawled to it. Opened it. Wrote the date at the top of a blank page.

*Morgan's wolf is dying.*

I'd seen the tremor in his left hand when he pinned me. The faint rot beneath his scent. The way his body had failed last night when I'd tried to complete the bond.

I wrote it all down. Dates. Observations. Carla's exact words.

This wasn't a journal entry.

This was evidence.

---

Three days later, I engineered my first real conversation with Rosie in the pack house kitchen.

She was scrubbing a pot when I walked in, her shoulders hunched, her movements quick and silent. She didn't look up.

I pulled a chair out. Sat. Pushed my untouched breakfast plate toward her.

"I'm not hungry," I said.

Rosie's hands stilled. She glanced at the plate. Then at me. Her eyes were pale gray, exhausted.

"You should eat it," I said. "I can't."

She hesitated. Then took the plate and ate standing up, fast, like someone might take it back.

I didn't say anything else. Just sat there until she finished.

"Thank you," she whispered.

I nodded. Stood. Walked to the window.

Outside, behind the pack house, I saw him.

Barnaby.

My father's wolfhound, the one he'd raised from a pup, the one I'd grown up with. He was kenneled in a chain-link pen, lying on bare dirt. His ribs showed through his coat.

I pressed my hand flat on the windowsill.

Rosie's voice came from behind me. "They don't feed him much."

I turned. She was watching me, her face carefully blank.

"How long has he been like that?"

"Two months. Since you got here."

I memorized the kennel's location. The lock type. The distance from the main house.

Then I looked at Rosie.

"What's your name?"

"Rosie Dixon."

"I'm Luna."

She almost smiled. "I know."

I left the kitchen. Went back to Morgan's quarters. Opened my field journal and added two lines:

*Rosie Dixon—Omega, Morgan's half-sister, observant.*

*Barnaby—kenneled, starved, location memorized.*

I had two things worth protecting inside Ironmaw now.

Protecting them would require staying alive and unbroken long enough to act.
