Chapter 7

Two days later, there was a post on Brady's Instagram.

That was a photo of Brady sitting on the balcony with Alyssa.

It also came with a paragraph of text. [She has been depressed since the divorce, and I'm really worried that she might do something drastic.]

This post was only visible to me.

After seeing this post, I immediately turned off my phone and focused on my work, trying to finish the project at hand as soon as possible.

Not long after, the project I was working on was a complete success, earning the company a large sum of money.

This was not the first time I had made money for the company.

My boss was very satisfied with me and promoted me to vice president.

Apart from my boss, the company had a total of two vice presidents before, and I was now the third one.

My colleagues congratulated me.

In the past, I would avoid socializing if I could, and after work, I would hurry home, thinking that Brady must be tired from work. As his wife, I should prepare delicious meals for him and take care of him in every possible way, letting him enjoy a few comforts of home.

But this time, I hosted a grand banquet.

I invited almost all my colleagues from the company.

After the meal, I went to a bar and sang with a few close colleagues from the company.

It was so much fun.

...

I staggered back home at three o'clock in the morning.

As a modern girl, I once boldly confessed my love to Brady, but I was quite conservative.

I had never come home this late before.

This was the first time!

Because I drank a lot, I accidentally fell down and knocked over something.

Glass shards cut my hands and there was blood everywhere.

Brady was awakened by the noise.

He walked out of the bedroom and turned on the light.

Seeing the scene, he didn't immediately ask about my injuries but pushed me away with an angry look on his face.

Only then did I realize that I had accidentally killed a goldfish.

"You killed it? How could you be so cruel?"

Brady's eyes were ablaze with anger as he yelled at me.

My palms were full of glass shards and hurt a lot. I said impatiently, "It's just a small goldfish. How much is it worth?"

"It's not about the money. You have no idea what it means to me!"

Brady held the dead goldfish, feeling extremely heartbroken.

I didn't bother with him. Enduring the pain in my palms, I said, "I drank alcohol and can't drive. Can you drive me to the hospital?"

Brady looked annoyed and said, "You're such a grown-up. Is it necessary to make such a fuss over a small injury?"

I was stunned for a moment.

Then I got up from the ground and stumbled my way downstairs.

In the cool breeze, I waited for a taxi, and only then did I realize that a living person couldn't even compare to a little goldfish.

Chapter 8

In the hospital, I was put on a drip.

Feeling bored, I scrolled through my Instagram feed.

I came across an account called "Utopian Love".

I was attracted by the picture of a dead goldfish.

I clicked on it.

It was the little goldfish that I accidentally killed.

The photo was captioned. [When she gave me the goldfish, she told me that she would be happy as long as the goldfish was healthy. But the goldfish died on the first day it came to my house!]

[What should I do?]

[Should I buy another similar goldfish and deceive her by saying it's the same one?]

[Nicole Parker, you are such a petty woman!]

[Jealousy has turned you into a monster!]

[You must have done it on purpose!]

Reading this post, I felt like my heart was torn apart with a deep and endless wound and it hurt so much and could not heal.

In his heart, maybe I couldn't really compare to the goldfish given by his ex.

...

The door to my heart was tightly closed!

Chapter 9

Since I was promoted to vice president, I had had more things to do.

I was often invited to some activities after work, and my boss occasionally took me to meet some clients. We ate and drank until late before going home.

In the past, I would not go.

As a woman, I thought my husband and family were the most important. My education told me that it was not decent for a woman to come home late at night.

But now, I enjoyed it. I thought my career was more important!

For half a month in a row, I almost always came home late at night.

...

Today, I didn't have a business dinner to attend.

I rarely had the chance to go home early.

Walking out of the company, I saw Brady's car parked at the curb and Alyssa sitting in the passenger seat.

Alyssa waved at me and said, "Hi, Nicole, long time no see."

I ignored her and turned to leave.

At this time, Brady got out of the driver's seat and stopped me, saying, "Nicole, today is our annual class reunion day. You haven't forgotten, right?"

Brady looked back at Alyssa and said, "She's going with me in my car."

I got in the car and sat in the back seat.

Sitting in the passenger seat, Alyssa gave me a strange look.

I didn't say anything, and she didn't continue talking to me. On the way, she and Brady were chatting and laughing as if they were the real couple.

We arrived at the private room for the gathering.

The first person I saw was Colin Bryant.

He was the person who divorced Alyssa. Alyssa once left Brady for Colin.

Alyssa originally wanted to approach Colin, but he just brushed her off. He deliberately avoided her and sat on my right side. Alyssa's face dropped.

After some greetings among old classmates, the food was served and everyone talked about recent events.

Alyssa was gloomy sitting over there.

She drank a lot of alcohol.

Her ex-husband was indifferent to all of this.

It was Brady who repeatedly told Alyssa not to drink anymore.

Suddenly, Alyssa said, "Drinking is no fun. It's rare for us to get together. How about we play Truth or Dare?"

I didn't want to play, but they insisted.

In the beginning, everything was interesting. Some truths occasionally caused us to burst into laughter.

When it was Alyssa's turn to ask questions, she provocatively asked Brady, "Who is more important to you, me and your wife?"

Everyone was shocked by Alyssa's question. No one expected her to ask Brady so boldly in front of me.

At this moment, Brady felt uncomfortable and smiled awkwardly. "I will punish myself with three drinks. I won't answer this question."

However, Alyssa persisted and stopped Brady, saying, "No way, you must answer this question!"

Looking at Alyssa's serious face, Brady remained silent for a moment and whispered, "You are more important."

This answer surprised all my classmates.

It embarrassed me!

Brady glanced at me, and I wondered if he felt guilty or was thinking about something.

But I didn't feel too angry. I just felt that everything was too ridiculous.

My old classmates thought that Alyssa went too far and immediately started talking to divert attention from this question.

When it was Brady's turn to ask, he asked me seriously, "Nicole, we've been married for many years. What is the one thing you most want to say to me?"

I calmly glanced at him and said, "Let's get a divorce!"
