Chapter 3

In particular, various voices calling Vivian Young were floating in my mind, as well as... Gavin's.

  He called Vivian Young gently.

  He whispered, "Vivian."

I looked at the two silent people in the car and thought to myself.

"How come the way Gavin called out to Vivian changed now?"

  "Why did Gavin marry Scarlett?"

I followed the car back to the wedding room of Gavin and Scarlett. At midnight, I floated to the room of Scarlett, which was a wall away from Gavin's.

She was crying in a low voice.

"I regret it. I shouldn't have fallen in love with him."

I floated over. She looked at a girl in a photo in a daze.

It was the girl by the river, Vivian, who loved to laugh.

She stood with Scarlett and made a heart-shaped gesture with her hand on Scarlett's head.

"Vivian." Scarlett touched Vivian's photo and muttered, "I'm sorry."

I wanted to ask her if it was because she married the boyfriend of her best friend.

There was nothing to be sorry about. Marriage was a personal matter.

But I couldn't say it. I lowered my head to look at my transparent hands.

  I was dead.

In the evening, I floated beside the sleeping Gavin and saw him tightly clench his cell phone. As it vibrated, Gavin woke up, sat up, and asked, "Have you found her?"

  Jack said he didn't.

He was so angry that he almost crushed his teeth. Then he pulled his messy hair and muttered, "Where did she go?"

Jack said that he would continue to look for me.

Gavin waited in the wedding room for three days.

He and Scarlett had dinner together and said good night to each other politely. As usual, he was up all night.

I floated above him and waved my hands in front of his eyes. He only blinked once in a long time. Well, if it went on like this, he would die suddenly.

  He was up until dawn.

The next night, he took two sleeping pills, but he still couldn't sleep well. He loosened his grip on the cell phone.

Then he woke up and called Jack, saying, "Have you found her?"

"No, I've searched all the places I can find. Mr. Horne... Miss Young may have had an accident."

The cell phone slipped out of Gavin's hands and fell to the ground with a click.

Gavin went out of the wedding room and drove to a villa in the suburbs.

It was all withered, and there was no green around. The top of the villa was covered with a large area of dark tree shade, rendering it quite gloomy.

I floated around the villa and suddenly thought of the flowers all over the place and two chubby Garfield cats outside their wedding house.

For some reason, I knew that Vivian would like Scarlett's villa.

This secluded house in front wasn't Vivian's thing.

I followed Gavin into the house.

He rummaged through the surroundings frantically.

He took out a photo from under a pillow.

I floated over to take a look.

It was the young Gavin, a middle-aged couple who were smiling, and... a young girl, who was Vivian. They were all smiling happily.

The photo wasn't framed. The corners were rolled up as if someone had touched it many times.

Gavin was silent. I looked at his face and wanted to blurt out something.

  "Dad, Mom."

  But I couldn't say it.

Gavin sat down by the bed with the photo and muttered, "This is my parents, not yours."

As he spoke, he tore off Vivian's smiling face and threw it to the ground. Then, he put the remaining half of the photos of him and his parents into his pocket.

Gavin sat in the villa till dusk and asked a man in black, "Have you found her?" Jack was here.

Chapter 4

Jack shook his head, saying, "No."

"How could that be?" he muttered. "That's impossible. Her parents died a long time ago. She has no money, no cell phone, and no friends. No one knows her. Where can she go?"

Hesitantly, Jack wanted to say, "Something might have happened to her."

Gavin didn't see his hesitant look.

But Jack had said so before. Gavin should know it, but he ruled out such a possibility.

  I was puzzled.

"Gavin, are you afraid that something will happen to Vivian if you admit it?"

But her boyfriend had married another woman. She had no parents, no money, no cell phone, and no friends, and she was locked up in this dark place, which was no different from having an accident.

For the first time, I complained that I was dead and couldn't speak, which made me inexplicably angry.

I went out to continue the search. It was dark. There was only Gavin in the room with one bed.

Gavin stayed in the darkness until dawn. Then, he dialed a number, saying, "I want to call the police."

I followed Gavin to the police station.

The policeman asked, "What's the relationship between the missing person and you?"

Gavin hesitated for a while before saying, "She went to my house at the age of five and lived there until she was eighteen. We were... childhood sweethearts."

The policeman asked, "Where are her immediate family members?"

  "They were dead."

  "How?"

  "Her mother was a researcher..."

He clenched his fists under the table, saying, "Her father was born with an inborn disease and died when she was eighteen. Her mother, who failed the experiment in the same year, committed suicide."

  I was stunned.

  "Is Vivian... that miserable?"

The policeman asked, "She is 28 years old this year?"

  "Yes."

"Was there anything unusual before she disappeared?"

He replied, "No, she is calm."

"Have her ever said anything strange?"

He suddenly got angry, saying, "She's missing. Why don't you look for her instead of asking me about this? Does it have anything to do with her disappearance?"

In the police station, Gavin shouted with tears in his eyes, "Go and find her! Go and find her!"

  I thought to myself.

"Jack fails to find her with so much manpower. What's the point of pining your hopes on the police?"

"You now are going nuts out of your incompetence."

  Scarlett took Gavin away.

Gavin seemed to have changed into another person on the way. He leaned against the window in silence.

Scarlett asked, "Have you ever blamed me?"
