Chapter 1

"Keep the engine running, Tom," I told my driver as I grabbed my leather overnight bag from the back seat.

"Are you sure, Mrs. Vance?" Tom asked, leaning over the center console. "I can carry that up to the door for you."

"No, thank you. I want this to be a surprise." I forced a smile, though a dull ache throbbed behind my eyes from the long flight. "Happy third anniversary to us. Go get yourself a coffee. I will text you if I need a ride back to the city later."

"Have a wonderful night, ma'am."

I pushed the heavy iron gate open and walked up the winding driveway of our estate. I had flown back from the Chicago business summit two days early. Julian thought I was stuck in endless board meetings until Friday. I wanted to see his face light up when I walked through the door. I wanted to celebrate three years of a perfect marriage.

I unlocked the front door and stepped into the grand foyer.

Silence.

"Julian?" I called out, keeping my voice low so I wouldn't wake anyone.

No answer.

Where was my husband? Where was our adopted son, Leo? Where was Elena, the young, energetic nanny I paid six figures a year to manage this household?

I dropped my bag by the sweeping mahogany staircase. I slipped my flats off my feet, leaving them neatly by the umbrella stand.

A muffled sound drifted down from the second floor. A rhythmic thud, followed by a sharp gasp.

My stomach tightened. Did someone break in?

I crept up the stairs, my bare feet sinking into the plush carpet. The noise grew louder, anchoring itself to the master suite at the end of the hall. More specifically, my custom dressing room.

I approached the heavy oak door. It sat open just a fraction of an inch.

"Julian?" I whispered, but the word died on my tongue.

A sharp slap echoed from inside the room.

"Fuck, yes," a woman whimpered.

That was not my voice.

I pushed the door open a tiny bit more and peered through the narrow gap.

My vision tunneled. The hallway around me vanished.

Elena. My sweet, reliable nanny.

She was straddling my husband on the velvet ottoman in the center of the room.

She wore my clothes. My two-thousand-dollar La Perla silk nightgown bunched up around her waist, exposing her bare thighs.

"Fuck me harder, Julian," Elena groaned, her nails digging into his shoulders.

Julian gripped her hips. He thrust up into her, his face buried in her neck. "You like that? You like taking her spot?"

"I love it," Elena moaned, throwing her head back. "I love riding your cock in her house. In her clothes."

My knees turned to water. I slapped a hand over my mouth to trap the scream tearing up my throat.

Julian pulled back, his hands sliding up to cup Elena's breasts through the thin silk. He squeezed hard, his thumbs flicking roughly over her nipples. "You are so fucking wet for me. You always were."

"Give it to me," she begged, grinding down on his groin. "Fill my pussy, Julian. Fuck."

He slammed into her again. The velvet ottoman creaked loudly under their weight. "I am going to ruin you right here. Right where my stupid wife gets dressed every morning."

Bile rose in my throat. I refused to look away. I stood paralyzed in the shadows, forced to watch the man I loved desecrate our marriage.

Elena rode him faster, her breasts bouncing against the silk. "Is she going to call tonight?"

"Who cares?" Julian grunted, his hips snapping upward. "Send it to voicemail. I am busy fucking the mother of my child."

The world stopped spinning. The air left my lungs.

*The mother of my child.*

"Keep your voice down," Elena gasped, though she did not slow her grinding. "Leo might hear."

"Leo is fast asleep," Julian said. He reached down, parting the silk to rub his thumb directly over her clitoris. "Our boy is a heavy sleeper. Just like you."

Elena let out a high-pitched squeal. "Oh, fuck, right there. Do not stop."

"I am not stopping," he growled. "We earned this. Three years of pretending to love that frigid bitch."

Tears burned my eyes. I dug my nails into my own cheeks, praying I would wake up from this nightmare.

"She thinks she is so smart," Julian grunted, slapping Elena's thigh. "Running off to New York to play CEO. She handed me the keys to the kingdom."

"She really believes you love her," Elena laughed, a cruel, breathy sound. "The way she looks at you at the dinner table makes me sick."

"I never look at her," Julian said, his hips slapping loudly against Elena's. "I close my eyes and picture you. I picture your perfect pussy."

"Fuck yes, Julian. Tell me I am better than her."

"You are tighter. You are wetter. She just lies there like a dead fish. Fucking her is a chore."

My stomach churned. A chore. We had made love three days ago before my flight. He had kissed my forehead, told me I was his entire world. It was all a script.

Elena leaned forward, kissing him hard. "How much longer, Julian? I hate watching her play mommy to our son."

"Not much longer," Julian muttered, thrusting deep and holding it there. "The Vance family trust unlocks on her thirtieth birthday next month. Once I have control of the accounts, we take the money, we take Leo, and we leave Serena with absolutely nothing."

"You promise?" Elena whined, rolling her hips against him.

"I swear it," Julian said. "I am doing this for us. For our family."

My chest convulsed. My heart ripped straight down the middle.

Leo. My beautiful two-year-old boy. I had spent countless nights rocking him to sleep, kissing his forehead, believing he was a gift from the universe since my doctors told me I would struggle to conceive.

He was not an orphan. He was theirs.

They had planned this. Julian convinced me to adopt. He handled the agency, the paperwork, the lawyers. He brought his own biological son into my house and handed him to me. Then, he suggested we hire a live-in nanny to help. He interviewed Elena himself.

This entire marriage was a stage play. Julian had targeted the Vance fortune. He brought his lover into my home. He made me raise his bastard son.

"Did you wire the offshore funds?" Elena asked, panting heavily as she picked up the pace.

"Half a million," Julian said, his voice straining. "Straight from her personal checking. She never looks at the statements. Her accountant is on my payroll."

"Fuck, you are brilliant," Elena whispered. "Take it all, Julian. Bleed her dry."

"I am going to bleed the Vance empire dry, and then I am going to fuck you on a pile of her cash."

"Julian, I am close," Elena cried out, her body shuddering. "Fuck, I am cumming."

"Take my cock, Elena. Take it all," Julian roared, his back arching as he drove up into her one final time.

I staggered backward. My foot caught the edge of the hallway runner.

I stumbled, my shoulder hitting the wall with a soft thud. A framed photograph of our wedding day rattled against the plaster.

Inside the room, the heavy panting stopped instantly.

"Did you hear that?" Julian asked, his tone dropping an octave.

"Hear what?" Elena murmured.

"Someone is in the hallway."

Footsteps hit the hardwood floor inside the dressing room.

I scrambled backward, my heart hammering against my ribs. I needed to run. I needed to hide.

"Hello?" Julian called out.

The brass doorknob slowly began to turn.

Chapter 2

The brass doorknob turned, the metal mechanism groaning loudly in the quiet hallway.

I threw myself backward, darting behind the massive marble pillar near the staircase just as the heavy oak door swung open.

Julian stepped out, a white towel wrapped loosely around his waist. "Who is out here?"

Silence filled the corridor. I pressed my spine against the cold stone, clamping both hands over my mouth to trap my erratic breathing.

"Julian, shut the door," Elena called out from inside the dressing room. "It was probably just the house settling."

"I swore I heard footsteps," he muttered, taking a step toward the stairs.

"Leo is fast asleep. The staff is off for the afternoon. Come back here and finish what you started."

Julian chuckled, a low, grating sound that made my skin crawl. "You are completely insatiable, Elena."

"Only for you. Now get back in here."

The door clicked shut, followed by the slide of the deadbolt.

I sprinted down the back staircase, my bare feet slapping against the hardwood. My chest heaved violently. I ducked into the downstairs powder room, locked the door, and grabbed my phone.

My fingers shook as I dialed Marcus, my head of security and private intelligence.

"Serena?" Marcus answered. "It is barely noon. What is going on?"

"I need a rush DNA test, Marcus. A triad comparison."

"A triad? Mother, father, child? Serena, those take days."

"I do not care what it takes," I snapped, gripping the edge of the porcelain sink. "Pay the lab whatever they want. I need the results by tonight."

"Tonight? That will cost a fortune."

"Use the private account. Do not ask questions. Just get it done."

"Okay, calm down. Get me the samples. Hair with the root attached is best."

"I will send a courier to your office in an hour."

I hung up and crept back upstairs, bypassing the master suite where muffled moans still echoed. I slipped into Elena’s bedroom. Her silver hairbrush sat on the vanity. I plucked three long, dark strands from the bristles and dropped them into a plastic bag.

Next, I moved to Leo's nursery. My two-year-old son lay in his crib, clutching a stuffed bear. I stared at his dark curls. He always cried when I held him. He only ever reached for Elena.

"Mommy," he mumbled in his sleep.

My stomach twisted sharply. I wasn't his mommy. I was his bank account.

I carefully pulled a loose hair from his pillowcase, sealing it in a second bag.

Julian’s comb in the guest bathroom provided the final sample. I handed the envelope to a private courier at the back gate and waited.

At six o'clock, my phone buzzed on the kitchen island. A secure PDF from Marcus.

I opened it.

*Probability of Paternity: 99.99%.*

*Probability of Maternity: 99.99%.*

A biological match. The three of them. A perfect, twisted family.

The phone slipped from my palm and clattered against the granite counter. I gripped the edge of the island, my knuckles turning white. Three years of marriage. Three years of Julian kissing my cheek, telling me I was his queen.

"Serena?"

I spun around. Julian stood in the kitchen doorway, dressed in a crisp navy button-down and slacks. He smiled, a picture of absolute devotion.

"You are home early," he said, crossing the room to wrap his arms around my waist. "Why didn't you call? I would have picked you up from the airport."

I forced my muscles to relax. I let him pull me against his chest. He smelled like my expensive body wash. He smelled like her.

"I wanted to surprise you," I said, keeping my voice perfectly level. "Happy anniversary, Julian."

He kissed my forehead. "Happy anniversary, my love. I missed you so much."

"I missed you too." The words tasted like ash on my tongue.

Elena walked into the kitchen, carrying Leo on her hip. She wore a modest, high-necked sweater. The perfect, innocent nanny.

"Mrs. Vance!" Elena beamed. "We didn't expect you until Friday."

"My meetings wrapped up early," I said, locking eyes with her. "I couldn't stand being away from my family any longer."

"Leo, look who is home," Elena cooed, bouncing the toddler. "Say hi to Mommy."

Leo buried his face in Elena's neck. "No."

"He is just fussy," Julian said, patting Leo's back. "He missed you, Serena."

"I am sure he did," I replied.

We moved to the long mahogany dining table. The crystal chandelier cast a warm glow over the roasted chicken and vegetables Elena had prepared.

"This looks wonderful, Elena," Julian said, raising his wine glass. "You always take such good care of us."

"It is my pleasure, Mr. Vance," she said, cutting a piece of carrot for Leo.

I picked up my fork, stabbing a piece of chicken. "You really go above and beyond, Elena. You treat Leo exactly like he is your own flesh and blood."

Elena’s knife scraped sharply against the porcelain plate. She glanced up, her eyes darting to Julian.

"Well," Elena stammered, her cheeks flushing. "He is a very special boy."

"He certainly is," I said. "Julian, do you remember when we adopted him? You handled all the paperwork. You found the agency."

Julian took a slow sip of his wine. He set the glass down, his expression completely blank. "Of course I remember. It was the best day of my life."

"You were so thorough," I continued, leaning forward. "You made sure every detail was perfect. You even found Elena for us."

"I wanted the best for our son," Julian said smoothly. "And Elena came highly recommended."

"By whom?" I asked.

The dining room fell dead silent. Leo dropped a carrot on the floor.

Julian cleared his throat. "An old colleague. Why do you ask?"

"No reason," I smiled, lifting my own glass. "I just feel so lucky. I have a devoted husband, a beautiful son, and a nanny who would do absolutely anything for this family."

Elena swallowed hard. She wiped Leo’s mouth with a napkin, avoiding my gaze.

"We are the lucky ones, Serena," Julian said. He reached across the table and covered my hand with his. "You gave us this life. You built the Vance empire. I am just grateful to share it with you."

I stared at his hand resting on mine. I wanted to drive my steak knife straight through the back of his palm.

"The trust fund unlocks next month," I said softly.

Julian’s eyes lit up. A microscopic twitch of greed, gone in a flash. "Your thirtieth birthday. It is a big milestone."

"It is," I agreed. "I was thinking about restructuring the accounts. Moving some assets around."

Elena stopped chewing. Julian’s fingers tightened around mine.

"Restructuring?" Julian asked, his voice tight. "Is that necessary? The current setup is very secure."

"I just want to ensure Leo’s future is protected," I said, pulling my hand out from under his. I picked up my wine glass. "We wouldn't want anyone taking advantage of the Vance fortune, would we?"

Julian let out a forced laugh. "Of course not. I will call the accountants tomorrow and see what options we have."

"Don't bother," I said. "I already have someone looking into it."

Julian shifted in his chair. "Who?"

"Just a new advisor," I lied. "Someone very thorough."

Elena stood up quickly, nearly knocking her chair backward. "I should get Leo ready for his bath. Excuse me."

She scooped the boy out of his high chair and hurried out of the dining room.

Julian watched her leave, a muscle ticking in his jaw. He turned back to me, his charming smile firmly back in place.

"You seem tired, sweetheart," he said. "Why don't you head up to bed? I will clean up down here."

"I think I will," I said, standing up. I smoothed the front of my skirt. "Oh, by the way, Julian."

"Yes?"

"I noticed my La Perla nightgown is missing from my closet. The silk one. Have you seen it?"

Julian froze. The color drained from his face.

"No," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I haven't."

"Strange," I said, walking toward the doorway. "I will just have to buy a new one."

I left him sitting at the table, surrounded by the remnants of our perfect life. My love for him had burned down to ashes, leaving nothing but a cold, hard resolve. They wanted my money. They wanted to bleed me dry.

Let them try.

I walked up the stairs, pulling my phone from my pocket. I opened a new message to Marcus.

*Lock down all offshore transfers. Freeze the joint accounts. The war starts tomorrow.*

Before I could hit send, a heavy hand clamped down on my shoulder.

I spun around.

Julian stood on the step right below me, his eyes entirely devoid of his usual warmth.

"Who is this new advisor, Serena?" he asked, his grip tightening until it hurt. "And why did you really come home early?"

Chapter 3

Julian’s grip dug into my shoulder. "Who is this new advisor, Serena? And why did you really come home early?"

I didn't flinch. I turned my head, staring blankly at his hand until he realized his mistake.

He loosened his fingers, feigning a gentle stroke over my collarbone.

"Are you interrogating me in my own house, Julian?" I asked.

"I am just worried about you." His voice dripped with fake concern. "You seem on edge. You walk in, start talking about trust funds, and now you are acting completely cold."

"I am exhausted." I swatted his hand away. "Running a company across three time zones does that to a person."

"So who is the advisor?"

"A consultant Marcus recommended. I want to double-check the tax liabilities before my birthday."

Julian’s jaw unclenched. The mention of taxes bored him. He only cared about the bottom line, not the work required to maintain it.

"I need a drink," I announced, turning my back to him. "Actually, I need to go back to the city. I left a crucial file at the office."

"Now?" Annoyance leaked into his tone. "It is our anniversary."

"You already celebrated."

He froze. "What?"

"We had champagne on Sunday, remember?" I forced a tight smile over my shoulder. "Do not wait up."

I walked out the front door, leaving him standing on the staircase.

My driver, Tom, was waiting by the gates.

"Back to the city, Tom," I instructed, climbing into the backseat.

"Everything alright, Mrs. Vance?" he asked, glancing in the rearview mirror.

"Everything is perfect," I lied.

The drive to Manhattan took an hour. I spent the entire time staring out the window, watching the streetlights blur into streaks of yellow. My phone buzzed in my purse. Three missed calls from Julian. Two texts from Elena asking if I wanted her to pack Leo's lunch for tomorrow.

I powered the phone off and tossed it onto the leather seat. The silence in the car felt heavy, suffocating. I rolled down the window, letting the cold night air bite at my cheeks. I needed to wash the stench of that house off my skin.

Two hours later, the heavy bass of an exclusive, hidden Manhattan speakeasy thumped against my ribs.

I sat at the far corner of the mahogany bar, swirling amber liquid in a heavy crystal glass.

I had shed my conservative work clothes for a skin-tight black dress I kept hidden in my office closet. The fabric clung to my curves, and the back dipped dangerously low, exposing my spine to the dim, smoky lighting. My red-bottom stilettos dangled off the edge of the brass footrail.

"Another double." I slid my empty glass forward.

The bartender poured the whiskey. I downed it in one burning swallow.

Julian and Elena. My money. My son. The betrayal clawed at my throat. I needed to numb it. I needed to do something reckless, something that would burn this perfect, fake life to the ground.

"Make it three," I demanded, tapping my manicured nail against the wood.

The bartender frowned. "Are you sure, miss?"

"I am paying you to pour, not to judge."

He filled the glass again. The burn of the alcohol did nothing to quiet the roaring in my ears.

A man stepped up to the counter, invading my peripheral vision.

He didn't just walk into the space; he commanded it. The ambient chatter around us seemed to die down the second he arrived.

I shifted my gaze.

He stood over six-foot-two, his broad shoulders blocking out the neon sign behind him. He wore a crisp black dress shirt, but the top three buttons hung open. Smooth, tanned skin stretched over hard chest muscles. A sharp collarbone peeked through the dark fabric.

"Macallan. Neat."

His voice rumbled low and rough, slicing straight through the loud music. It was a sound that demanded absolute obedience.

I studied his profile. A sharp, unforgiving jawline covered in dark stubble. Dangerous, storm-grey eyes that scanned the room with complete authority.

Dominic Blackwood.

I recognized him immediately from the Forbes covers. A ruthless venture capitalist. A man who ruined empires for sport and bought out his enemies just to fire them.

Perfect. A monster to fight my monsters.

I picked up my fresh drink and slid off the stool.

I walked right into his personal space, stopping mere inches from his chest.

He glanced down. His grey eyes locked onto mine, cold and calculating. He didn't step back. He didn't even flinch.

"You are in my way," Dominic stated.

"It is a big bar." I traced the rim of my glass with my index finger. "Walk around me."

A muscle ticked in his cheek. He leaned forward, catching the scent of my perfume.

"I do not walk around people. I go through them."

I let out a sharp laugh. It sounded foreign to my own ears. "I would love to see you try."

Dominic raised an eyebrow. He took his glass from the bartender and took a slow sip, never breaking eye contact.

"You are drunk."

"I am high-functioning," I countered, stepping even closer. My Louboutins brushed against his polished leather loafers. "And I am bored. Are you boring, Mr. Blackwood?"

His gaze dropped to my mouth, then dragged down my neck, lingering on the exposed skin of my chest.

"People usually run the other way when they see me."

"I am not most people."

"No." His voice dropped an octave. "You are Serena Vance. A married woman."

My stomach twisted. He knew exactly who I was. Of course he did. In our world, everyone knew everyone's net worth.

I forced a wicked, wild smile onto my face.

"My husband is currently occupied," I whispered, tilting my head back to meet his stare. "He likes to play house with the help. So, I am playing by my own rules."

Dominic’s eyes flared with a lethal, possessive spark. He set his glass down on the counter with a sharp click and wrapped a large, heavy hand around my wrist.

"Then let's see how well you play," he rumbled, dragging me toward the private elevator at the back of the club.
