The Vampire Prince Chose the Tribute Girl Chapter 1

At twenty-one, my family paid their oldest debt with my body.

My father signed the tribute papers before breakfast.

My mother corrected the spelling of my name and never looked at me.

My brother took the bracelet Grandma had left me while I was packing.

My sister laughed and told me not to seduce the vampire prince.

By sunset, I belonged to the House of Draven—or so my family wanted me to believe.

“There,” Father said, pressing his signet ring into the black wax. “The Vale family’s obligation is fulfilled for another fifty years.”

The seal showed a crown wrapped in bat wings. It looked less like a peace treaty and more like a mouth closing around prey.

I stood on the other side of his desk with one suitcase. Rain scratched at the windows of Vale Manor, turning the gardens gray. Mother sat beside Father, arranging the tribute documents into a neat stack as if she were preparing invitations for a charity dinner.

Neither of them asked whether I was afraid.

Our family was one of the richest human dynasties in the Peace Experiment Zone. Newspapers claimed Father’s shipping empire had been built through brilliance and discipline. The truth lived in the locked archive under the manor: two hundred years ago, King Alaric Draven had given my grandfather money, trade routes, and protection. In exchange, every half century, the Vales would send one direct descendant to the vampire court as proof of loyalty.

Grandma Rose had called it a barbaric hostage clause. She had spent years trying to break it.

Then she died.

Three months later, my parents chose me.

Julian leaned against the bookcase, turning my silver bracelet around his fingers. He was twenty-four, handsome in the polished, empty way Father admired.

“Give that back,” I said.

He smiled. “You won’t need jewelry where you’re going.”

“Grandma gave it to me.”

“And Father gave me permission to take anything useful from your room.”

Father did not deny it. Mother only sighed. “Elara, don’t make your last morning unpleasant.”

My last morning. As if I were the one ruining it.

Julian had always taken what little I received. Birthday money. A vintage camera. The corner bedroom Grandma had promised me. Last week, he had brought three friends home from Concordia University and ordered me to serve drinks because the staff had gone for the evening. One of them, Miles Hart, had trapped me against the kitchen counter, dragged a finger over my bare arm, and whispered that tribute girls should practice obedience.

When I shoved him away, Julian called me dramatic.

When I told Mother, she asked what I had been wearing.

Now Miles’s fingerprints felt ghosted onto my skin as Julian fastened my bracelet around his own wrist.

The door swung open, and Daphne entered in a cream campus uniform that fit her like it had been designed for her alone. At twenty, my younger sister was already the darling of the coexistence program—beautiful, loud, and surrounded by people who repeated every cruel thing she said.

Her eyes swept over my plain sweater and rain-frizzed brown hair.

“You look exactly like a servant,” she said. “At least the vampires won’t be disappointed.”

She moved closer, lowering her voice. “One warning. Prince Lucien studies at Concordia. Don’t embarrass me by throwing yourself at him once you’re scrubbing floors in his castle.”

I almost laughed. Daphne had spent two years engineering reasons to stand near the vampire crown prince. She volunteered for blood-donation galas, attended every interspecies debate, and once changed her entire schedule because someone said he used the east library on Thursdays.

“I’m being sent as tribute,” I said. “Romance isn’t high on my list.”

“As if he’d want you.” Her smile sharpened. “Everyone knows you’re the ugly Vale. Slow, awkward, unwanted. Just remember your place.”

I knew my place. My family had taught it to me every day.

At Concordia—the university human officials and the Vampire Empire had built to prove we could coexist—Julian controlled the elite student council, and Daphne controlled everything else. If I answered a question correctly, someone whispered that a professor had taken pity on me. Photos appeared online with captions about the Vale family’s irritating daughter. Students spilled drinks over my notes and laughed when I knelt to gather the pages.

Only Noah Mercer ever helped.

He was the unacknowledged son of another treaty family, tolerated because his father could not erase him without scandal. We shared lunches on the greenhouse roof and jokes about being spare pieces in perfect families.

I had texted him goodbye that morning.

My message still showed unread.

A black car stopped outside. The driver wore the silver eyes-and-crown crest of House Draven.

Father rose at last. For one stupid heartbeat, I thought he might hug me.

He handed me the tribute contract instead.

“Do not cause trouble,” he said. “Everything we have depends on the king’s favor.”

Mother kissed the air near my cheek. Julian kept my bracelet. Daphne filmed my departure until the car turned through the gates.

I did not cry. I had learned long ago that tears were useless in Vale Manor.

The Peace Zone stretched between the human capital and the mountains claimed by the vampires. Concordia’s glass towers stood at its center, surrounded by embassies, laboratories, and guarded residential districts. Beyond them rose Castle Draven, black stone cutting into the storm clouds.

An elderly vampire butler opened my door and bowed.

“Miss Elara Vale,” he said. “Welcome home.”

Home.

The word hurt more than servant would have.

Inside, the castle glowed with firelight. No one searched my bag. No one ordered me to kneel. A maid took my wet suitcase while the butler—Mr. Graves—guided me into a library where a tall man with silver at his temples waited beside the fireplace.

I recognized King Alaric from coins and broadcasts. In person, he looked less monstrous and more tired. His crimson eyes softened when he saw me.

“My dear,” he said, coming forward with both hands open. “I am sorry.”

I stopped. “For what?”

“For a treaty written by frightened men before either of us was born. The tribute clause was meant to create royal wards—living witnesses who could guarantee that neither side betrayed the other.” His mouth tightened. “You are not a slave. You will never be forced to give blood, labor, or affection in this house.”

My knees almost failed me.

“You’re not going to lock me underground?”

The king looked appalled. Mr. Graves made a choking sound behind me.

“Who told you that?” Alaric asked.

“My family.”

Something ancient and dangerous flashed across his face. “Then your family and I will eventually have a conversation.”

Footsteps sounded at the library entrance.

I turned—and forgot how to breathe.

Prince Lucien Draven was taller than he looked across a lecture hall. Black hair fell over his forehead, carelessly perfect against skin pale enough to make his mouth seem indecently red. He wore the same dark Concordia uniform I had seen a hundred times, but without the distance of a crowded campus, every detail struck harder: the controlled strength in his shoulders, the faint pulse of silver beneath his crimson irises, the stillness of a predator pretending to be a man.

My body reacted before my mind could defend me. Heat slid under my skin. My heartbeat stumbled, then raced so violently that his gaze dropped to me.

His pupils widened.

He heard it.

Of course he heard it.

Daphne’s warning echoed in my head, and humiliation burned hotter.

The king gestured between us. “Elara, this is my son, Lucien. Lucien, our new royal ward.”

The prince stared at me as if the room had emptied around us.

“We’ve met,” he said quietly.

I blinked. “We have?”

The corner of his mouth moved.

The king said something amused, but I barely heard him.

Lucien came closer and offered his hand. The instant our fingers touched, a sharp, warm current traveled up my arm. His composure cracked. His nostrils flared, and for one breath his fangs pressed against his lower lip.

He released me too quickly.

Yet his gaze remained on mine, hungry and startled and far too intimate.

Maybe he knew me because Daphne was famous.

But no man had ever looked at me as if I were the dangerous thing in the room.

Lucien did.

And some reckless part of me wanted him to keep looking.
