The wife who came back from the dead Chapter 1

Maya's pov

“Mommy!”

Ethan’s small, urgent voice cut through the quiet playroom like a knife. My head snapped up from the scattered building blocks on the rug, heart clenching instantly, the way it always did at that particular tone from my four-year-old. He stood by the tall window, rain lashing the glass behind him in furious sheets, clutching his favorite red toy airplane so tightly his knuckles were white. Thunder growled in the distance, making the lights flicker once. The storm had turned the evening into something dark and menacing.

“I’m right here, sweetheart,” I said, forcing calm into my voice as I rushed to him and dropped to my knees. I cupped his flushed cheeks, brushing damp curls from his forehead. His eyes were already wide with fear. “What’s wrong, baby?”

His lower lip quivered. “My chest feels funny, Mommy. Like… like a big heavy rock is sitting on it.” He dropped the airplane with a clatter and lunged into my arms, tiny fingers twisting desperately into my blouse. “Help me. Please.”

Those words landed like a gut punch. I pulled him close, feeling the terrifyingly rapid, shallow rise and fall of his little chest against me. *Not again. Please, not tonight.* We had practiced this drill too many times, but something in the air felt heavier, more dangerous. “Okay, my brave boy. Breathe with Mommy, nice and slow..just like the doctor taught us. In through your nose… out through your mouth. Ready?”

He tried so hard, his small body trembling in my embrace as I rocked him gently on the rug. But then the wheezing started…that awful, thin whistle like air forcing itself through a collapsing straw. My stomach dropped. I scooped him up…he felt heartbreakingly light..and ran across the hall to the nursery, bare feet slapping against the cold marble floors of the mansion.

The inhaler.

Now.

My hands shook violently as I snatched it from the nightstand along with the spacer. “Deep breath, baby. Here we go.” I shook the device hard, pressed the mouthpiece to his lips, and delivered four quick puffs. “Breathe in slowly… hold it… good job, Ethan. You’re doing so well.”

It gave a tiny bit of relief at first, but not nearly enough. His chest heaved with desperate effort, ribs pulling in sharply with each labored breath. Blue was creeping into his lips. Real fear gripped my throat, making my own breathing ragged. I grabbed my phone while cradling him tight.

“Stay with me, sweetheart. Mommy’s right here. I’ve got you.” Tears burned my eyes as I dialed Adrian. It rang. Once. Twice. Three times. Voicemail.

I paced frantically in the nursery, the storm raging louder outside, wind rattling the windows as if trying to break in. “Adrian, pick up. Please, God, pick up this time.”

Voicemail again. His polished, detached voice: *Leave a message.*

“Adrian, it’s Ethan…he’s having a severe asthma attack. I gave him the inhaler but it’s not working. His lips are turning blue. We’re heading to the hospital right now. Please meet us there. He needs you. *We* need you.” My voice cracked on the last word. I hung up and redialed immediately. Straight to voicemail.

I couldn’t wait. Every second was slipping away. I wrapped Ethan in his beloved blue star blanket, holding him close as his head grew heavy on my shoulder. “We’re going on a little adventure to see the doctors, okay? They’re going to make that rock go away.”

The mansion felt cavernous and hollow as I rushed through it ,long hallways lined with expensive art I barely noticed, closed doors to rooms I rarely entered. My socks were soaked the moment I stepped outside into the downpour. The driveway stretched endlessly under the black sky. I fumbled with the car door, finally yanking it open, and carefully buckled Ethan into his seat. Rain drenched me to the bone, but I barely felt it.

“Tell me about your airplane, baby. Flying through the clouds, remember?” I started the engine, wipers slashing furiously. The road blurred with rain and my tears. One hand on the wheel, the other reached back to rest on his leg, desperate for any sign of movement. “You’re so strong, Ethan. Keep breathing for Mommy. Please.”

As I drove, memories flooded in to fight the panic. The day he was born, his tiny fingers wrapping around mine in the delivery room while Adrian took calls outside. I had foolishly hoped a child would mend our arranged marriage, bridge the chasm between the Sterling and Blackwood empires. Instead, I became a ghost in this mansion, tolerated for appearances while Adrian poured his attention into Vanessa, his true love, his childhood sweetheart. Elegant parties, spontaneous trips, late nights “at the office.” I raised Ethan alone: singing lullabies, kissing scraped knees, teaching him letters on the playroom floor.

The car hydroplaned slightly on a curve. I gripped the wheel tighter, whispering, “Hang on, my love. We’re almost there.” Ethan mumbled something faint, lost under the rain. My pulse thundered in my ears. *Why won’t he answer? Doesn’t he understand this could be life or death?*

I remembered his last bad attack, when Adrian had promised more presence. Empty words. Vanessa always came first, her smile in the tabloids, her influence in his world. I was the paper wife, staying silent to honor my late parents’ legacy. But tonight, none of that mattered. Only Ethan.

Hospital lights finally pierced the storm like a desperate beacon. I screeched to a stop at the emergency entrance, leaving the car running, and lifted my son into my arms. “Help us!” I shouted as the doors whooshed open. “Severe asthma attack! He can’t breathe! I gave him albuterol at home but it’s not enough, his lips are blue!”

Chaos erupted efficiently. “Pediatric respiratory distress, room two!” Nurses swarmed. They took him gently but urgently, laying him on the bed. Oxygen mask first, high flow. Monitors beeped to life: heart rate skyrocketing, oxygen saturation dropping. I stood dripping in the corner, useless, terrified.

“Please,” I begged. A nurse squeezed my arm. “We’ve got him. Stay close.”

Continuous nebulizers started, albuterol to open airways, and ipratropium to ease the tightness. A doctor explained quickly: “This relaxes the muscles. Steroids via IV next, dexamethasone to reduce swelling.” Ethan looked so tiny amid the machines, fighting bravely. His eyes met mine. “Mommy…”

“I’m right here, my strong boy. The medicine is working. Keep fighting.” I held his hand when I could, stroking his hair, the storm outside forgotten against the one tearing me apart.

Six calls later, Adrian finally answered.

“Maya.” Annoyed. Music and laughter in the background,Vanessa’s birthday.

“Adrian, we’re at Memorial in the ER. It’s bad. Oxygen, continuous treatments, steroids. They’re worried about respiratory failure. Please come. He needs us both.”

A pause. Vanessa’s bright laugh sliced through like glass.

“It’s her birthday, Maya. You know how important these connections are. Doctors will handle it. I’ll try to swing by later.”

“He might not have *time*!” I cried, sliding down the wall. “This is our son fighting to breathe. Not a meeting. Don’t abandon him. Don’t abandon us again.”

He sighed, irritated. “You always exaggerate. Let them do their job.” Click.

I clutched the phone, tears streaming. *An arranged marriage to a man who sees me as a contract. A son who was my everything, now struggling because his father chose a party.* My parents’ legacy, my sacrifices, all for this cold reality.

The team pushed magnesium sulfate through the IV when initial treatments faltered. They discussed BiPAP support. I returned to Ethan’s side, whispering encouragement: “Remember your tricycle? You fell but got up stronger. Fight, baby.”

His breaths weakened. Eyes fluttered. Tiny fingers squeezed mine faintly.

Then alarms shrieked. Oxygen plummeted. The breathing line went flat.

“Ethan!” I gasped.

“He’s stopped breathing…move!” the doctor barked.

Nurses rushed in. Someone pulled me back gently as they worked to breathe for him.

My world narrowed to that tiny, terrifyingly still chest. Ethan had stopped breathing.
