He Abandoned Our Foster Daughter for His Mistress, So I Replaced Him with My First Love Chapter 1

I dressed seven-year-old Sophie in the yellow dress I chose for our first official family portrait.

We had spent eighteen months preparing for this final adoption hearing.

My husband, Ryan, never showed up.

Forty minutes before the judge called our case, he quietly withdrew his consent.

Then the courtroom doors opened, and Ryan walked in holding his pregnant assistant's hand.

He looked at the judge and declared he didn't need "someone else’s damaged daughter" now that he was having his biological child.

Sophie heard every single word.

Ryan ordered me to leave the courthouse with him and let the social worker take the crying child away.

I slowly took off my wedding ring and dropped it on the courtroom floor.

I knelt beside Sophie, pulled her into my arms, and filed an emergency petition to adopt her as a single mother.

"Hold still for two seconds, sweetie."

I knelt on the courthouse steps, smoothing the crisp pleats of Sophie’s pale yellow dress. She had picked it out three weeks ago, specifically because yellow was "the color of fresh sunshine."

"Is Ryan here yet, Clara?" Sophie asked, peering past my shoulder toward the busy downtown street. Her small fingers worried the hem of her lace collar. "He promised he’d wear the blue tie. The one that matches the ribbon."

I checked my phone. Ten minutes past nine. The screen showed zero missed calls, zero texts.

"He's probably caught in traffic, baby," I said, forcing a smile onto my face. "You know how terrible parking gets down here."

"What if he forgets?"

"He won't forget today." I reached up and tucked a stray strand of brown hair behind her ear. "Today is the day we make everything official. Today, you become our daughter forever."

A shy grin broke across her face. "Our first family photo. The photographer in the lobby has that giant camera with the silver umbrella."

"We'll take ten photos if you want."

The heavy brass doors behind us creaked open. Our social worker, Brenda Cooper, stepped out into the morning air. Her mouth formed a tight line, her eyes darting between me and Sophie.

"Clara," Brenda said quietly. "Judge Martinez is ready for us in Courtroom 4B."

"Ryan isn't here yet," I said, standing up and smoothing down my skirt. "Can we ask for a ten-minute recess? He knows how critical this hearing is."

"We need to step inside right now," Brenda insisted. Her tone wasn't just formal; it was strained. "The judge wants to address us on the record."

Sophie took my hand. Her palm was clammy, her little fingers locking onto mine like a lifeline. "Clara? Are we in trouble?"

"Of course not," I promised, squeezing her hand. "Just court rules. Come on."

Inside Courtroom 4B, the air felt freezing. Wood paneling lined the walls, absorbing every stray sound. Judge Martinez sat high behind the bench, her glasses resting on the tip of her nose as she flipped through a thin stack of papers.

"Please be seated," the judge said, not looking up until we reached the wooden table on the left.

"Good morning, Your Honor," I began, remaining on my feet. "My husband, Ryan Holloway, has been delayed by traffic. We request a brief delay—"

"Mrs. Holloway," Judge Martinez interrupted, folding her hands over the docket. "Your husband is not in traffic."

A chill ran down my neck. "I'm sorry?"

"At eight-twenty this morning, forty minutes ago, Mr. Holloway filed a formal petition via his attorney," the judge said evenly. "He has officially withdrawn his consent for the joint adoption of Sophie."

The courtroom spun. The polished mahogany table seemed to tilt beneath my fingertips.

"He... what?" The word barely left my throat. "That's impossible. We’ve spent two years on this process. We finished the home studies. He signed the initial placement agreements six months ago."

"The revocation is legally valid up until the final decree is signed," Judge Martinez stated. "Without both spouses consenting, this joint petition is dead."

"No," I whispered. "No, there has to be a mistake. He loves Sophie. He bought her bedroom furniture last month. He—"

The heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom slammed open.

The loud bang echoed off the high ceiling. I spun around, my heart leaping into my throat.

Ryan stood in the doorway. He wore an expensive gray suit, his hair neatly styled. But he wasn't alone. Clinging to his arm was Madison, his twenty-four-year-old administrative assistant. Her tight cream knit dress did nothing to hide the distinct round curve of a five-month baby bump. Madison rested one hand possessively over her stomach, staring right at me with a smirk that turned my stomach.

Sophie gasped, shrinking behind my legs. She gripped my skirt so hard the fabric strained.

"Ryan?" My voice shook with raw fury. "What is this?"

Ryan didn't flinch. He strolled down the center aisle as if he owned the entire building, Madison trailing beside him. He stopped at the wooden gate dividing the gallery from the counsel tables.

"It’s called reality, Clara," Ryan said, his voice ringing through the quiet room.

"Mr. Holloway," Judge Martinez barked, banging her gavel once. "You will show respect in this court."

"I'm here to clarify my position, Your Honor," Ryan replied smoothly, completely ignoring the judge's warning. He fixed his cold gaze on me. "I’m not playing house anymore, Clara. Madison is pregnant. She’s carrying my child. My biological son."

The air left my lungs in a sharp rush. A biological son.

"You cheated on me," I said, the truth hitting me like a physical blow. "For months."

"I gave you five years to give me a child of our own," Ryan snapped, leaning over the rail. "You couldn't do it. So I found someone who could. And now that I have my own flesh and blood coming into this world, I don't need someone else’s damaged daughter."

Sophie flinched violently against my thigh. A small, ragged whimper escaped her throat.

Something inside me snapped. The shock and sorrow evaporated, replaced by an incandescent, burning rage.

"Don't you dare call her that," I hissed, taking a step toward him.

"I'm telling the truth," Ryan said, waving a hand dismissively toward the child hiding behind me. "Her parents dumped her in the system. God knows what genetic baggage she has. I tolerated the foster process because you cried every night about empty bedrooms. But things have changed. Madison and I are starting a real family."

Madison smiled, stroking her belly. "We already painted the nursery seafoam green, Clara. Just like you wanted."

"Get your things and let's go," Ryan ordered me, pointing toward the exit. "The car is running downstairs. Brenda can take the kid back to the shelter or wherever the state keeps them. You’re coming home, and we’re going to discuss the divorce terms like adults."

Sophie began to sob. It wasn't a loud tantrum; it was the quiet, terrified weeping of a child who had been thrown away before and knew the feeling all too well. Her tiny arms wrapped around my knees, anchoring herself to me.

"Please don't let them take me," Sophie whispered, her voice muffled against my clothes. "Clara, please. I'll be good. I won't spill my milk anymore. Please."

Ryan rolled his eyes. "See? Pure drama. Grab your purse, Clara. Now."

I stared at the man I had lived with for seven years. His handsome face looked monstrous, stripped of every illusion of decency.

I reached down to my left hand. My fingers caught the diamond wedding band and the heavy platinum engagement ring. Without a word, I dragged them off my knuckle.

I stepped up to the railing, locked eyes with Ryan, and threw the rings straight at his chest.

They bounced off his silk tie and hit the floor with a sharp metallic clatter, rolling to a stop near Madison’s pointed shoes.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" Ryan snapped, stepping back.

I turned my back on him. Completely.

I dropped to both knees on the courtroom floor, bringing my face level with Sophie's. Her cheeks were wet with tears, her lower lip trembling. I framed her small face with both my hands, wiping the wet streaks away with my thumbs.

"Look at me, Sophie," I commanded softly. "Look right at my eyes."

She sniffled, blinking through her tears to meet my gaze.

"You are not damaged," I told her, my voice ringing clear and steady. "You are bright, and you are kind, and you are the best thing that ever happened to my life. Nobody is taking you away. Do you hear me? Nobody."

"He... he said he didn't want me," she hiccuped.

"He doesn't matter," I said fiercely. "I want you. And I'm never letting go."

I stood up, turning to face the bench.

"Your Honor," I projected my voice toward the judge. Brenda Cooper immediately stepped up beside me, pulling a fresh blue folder from her briefcase. We had prepared for emergencies, though neither of us had imagined this specific nightmare.

"Mrs. Holloway?" Judge Martinez asked, leaning forward.

"I wish to amend the petition immediately," I stated, my spine straight as steel. "Under state family code section 402, I am requesting an emergency conversion to an independent single-parent adoption."

Ryan scoffed loudly from behind the rail. "Are you insane? You're a high school art teacher! You don't have the money to raise a kid on your own. My name is on the house, the investments, everything. You won't see a dime of my fortune, Clara!"

I didn't even look back at him. My eyes stayed locked on the judge.

"She is my daughter," I said, each word hitting the silence like an iron hammer. "And you, Ryan? You are nothing."

Ryan’s face flushed a violent, ugly crimson. He stepped forward to grab the gate latch, but the bailiff instantly stepped into his path, hand resting on his utility belt.

"Step back, sir," the bailiff warned.

"You're making the biggest mistake of your life!" Ryan snarled at me, his composure shattering into pure venom. "You'll be begging me for child support by next month! Enjoy poverty with your charity case!"

"Remove him from this courtroom," Judge Martinez ordered, pointing a finger toward the doors. "Now."

Ryan glared at me once more, grabbed Madison’s wrist roughly, and hauled her out into the corridor. The heavy doors banged shut behind them, cutting off the echo of their footsteps.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

"Mrs. Holloway," Brenda spoke up, placing the blue folder onto the clerk's desk. "The agency supports Clara’s fitness as a sole custodian. We have monitored her relationship with Sophie for over a year. However, procedural law requires a full forty-five-day reassessment of Clara's solo financial and residential capability before a final decree can be issued."

My chest tightened. "Judge, please. Don't send her back to temporary foster care while you reassess. She’s been through enough trauma today."

Judge Martinez looked down at Sophie, whose hand was still locked in mine. The judge's stern expression softened just a fraction.

"Based on the circumstances and the agency's positive prior evaluations," Judge Martinez declared, "I will grant an emergency temporary custody order to Clara Holloway. Sophie remains in your care under protective supervision until the single-parent hearing on the twenty-seventh of next month."

The gavel struck the sound block. *Crack.*

"Thank you, Your Honor," I breathed, sinking slightly into the table for support.

Brenda gave my shoulder a supportive squeeze as we collected our paperwork. "You won the battle for today, Clara. But Ryan's lawyers are vicious. When he files for divorce tomorrow, he’s going to freeze every joint account before the sun comes up."

I looked down at Sophie. She was looking at her yellow dress, then glanced up at me with timid hope.

"We're going home, right, Clara?" she asked.

"Yes, baby," I smiled, holding her hand tightly. "We're going home."

Yet as we walked through the courthouse rotunda, my phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was a text from an unknown number:

*You think you won her? Check your front door when you get home. It’s already started.*
