Chapter 4

All the words I wanted to utter were stuck in my throat.

I actually tried to argue with him.

When I lay in the ICU and learned that my baby was taken away from me, the nurse asked me,

"Do you wanna take a look at the fetus?"

I had no strength back then, but I still asked the nurse to let me take a final look at her.

It was a girl Ethan had always wanted.

He had been imagining having a daughter since we were in the orphanage.

"Yara, I will marry you when I grow up. We'll have a daughter, and I'll spoil you two."

I could never forget how serious Ethan was at that moment. I could see my reflection in his eyes.

I teased him for not focusing on studying and being too obsessed with those ridiculous love stories.

But he told me he was serious about it.

Ethan was even willing to die for me at that time.

We supported each other and got out of the orphanage.

We were like destined lovers who were one another's salvation and support.

When Ethan married me, he hadn't been back to the Sean family.

The cramped basement was our wedding room.

It was a winter day. Our electric blanket caught on fire. I did my best to get Ethan, who had a high fever, out of the room.

But when I returned to get his computer, which he attached great importance, I was trapped in the fire.

I got burned, and my skin was left with large areas of scars because we were too poor to get proper treatment.

Even though I was covered in scars, Ethan still cared for me instead of feeling disgusted.

Then, I got pregnant with Daniel, and the Sean family found Ethan.

Ethan's grandmother hated me for not coming from a good family or having a good appearance. She forced Ethan to divorce me and gave me five million dollars in compensation. But I refused her.

All I knew was that Ethan was my husband. He and I would be together for the rest of our lives.

But our love didn't move the Sean family.

I had several accidents, and Ethan successfully protected me and my child.

The person who helped us was Brenda.

I was grateful to her but also wary of her.

I had no confidence in facing Brenda because of my ruined face.

Even though I felt reluctant, I had to admit that Ethan needed Brenda.

Ethan's situation in the Sean family wasn't good when he just returned. People were waiting for him to make a fool of himself. Then, they could take power from him. The business world was like a battlefield, and the tricks they played were simply beyond my imagination.

Under Brenda's protection, Daniel was born safely, but Madam Sean still refused to acknowledge me as her granddaughter-in-law.

It was Brenda who put in a good word for me and made Daniel recognized by the Sean family.

The condition was Brenda had to be Daniel's nominal mother.

Later, Ethan spent a lot of money to treat my scars. As my scars faded, our love also faded to almost nothing.

The moment I saw our daughter, I knew that there was no future for Ethan and me.

My silence made Ethan realize that he had spoken out of turn.

"Alright. Do you know how scary it your face look when you're upset? I'll take you home and let you give the gift you picked to Daniel in person. Remember to wear a mask!"

He sounded condescending again.

He called the Sean residence home.

"That's right. Brenda lives in the Sean residence. So, that's home for Ethan." I thought.

I did miss Daniel. That would probably be the last time I saw him.

I nodded to agree.

"Let's get divorced first. I'll say goodbye to him properly."

I didn't know how my words offended Ethan, but he threw the Lego blocks that I had selected for Daniel out hard.

His reaction destroyed the last hope I had left.

I picked up the photo frame I cherished the most and smashed it.

Suddenly, Brenda opened the door and came in.

Chapter 5

The glass fragments scratched Brenda's instep.

Blood immediately appeared.

I stood there in a daze, unable to understand why Brenda had access to my house.

When I figured it out, all I could do was smile bitterly.

Brenda looked at the mess on the ground and frowned slightly.

"Yara, just take it out on me if you want. Don't get angry with Ethan. You could ruin your relationship if you continue to act this way!"

Seeming unaware that her foot was injured, Brenda just limped over to me and calmly opened a can of soup.

"Yara, I spent three hours cooking this chicken soup. I know my mistake is unforgivable. But I still wanna do something to make up for you..."

Ethan was already rummaging through the medicine box anxiously. Then he squatted down and carefully treated Brenda's wound.

Looking at Brenda, who looked pretty, dressed up, and looked humble, I realized for the first time why I lost it to her.

It struck me that I no longer needed her help in the future. So I didn't have to compromise myself to play that game with her.

"Take your soup and get out of here! You can do whatever you want when Ethan and I get a divorce!"

Brenda was able to bully me only because of Ethan.

"Yara, how come you don't understand us? You are still young, and you can still have children when you recover. If I really want Ethan, do you think you can win?"

Mentioning children made my heart ache so much.

Seeing me covering my chest, Brenda became anxious.

"Yara. How are you feeling? Is it your heart again?"

"Ethan, hurry up and get the medicine! We all misunderstood Yara. She really has a heart problem!"

They fed me medicine, and this time, it was the real medicine.

So, they replaced my medicine just to see whether I was pretending to have a heart disease or not.

It seemed they were satisfied with the results.

After I caught my breath, I pushed Brenda, who was supporting me, away.

"Don't act like you care about me!"

Chapter 6

Ethan pulled Brenda into his arms immediately, and his big hands tightly embraced her waist.

He did look worried about her.

"Yara Garret! You're sick, but that doesn't mean we owe you anything!"

"You can blame me, but you shouldn't treat Brenda this way. She helped you build up Mrs. Sean's reputation and raised Daniel for you. Not only do you not thank her, but you also hurt her. You should apologize to her!"

I suddenly lost the desire to talk to him. I was too tired, and my heart started to hurt again.

I checked the time, and the City Hall had already closed.

I endured the discomfort and began to ask them to leave,

"Ethan, I will apologize to her if you agree to divorce me."

"If you don't sign the divorce papers, please get out of my house!"

My words made the two people who were embraced together unhappy.

The cold air emanating from Ethan made me, who already felt cold, feel even colder.

"This is my house. Who are you to chase us away?"

I looked up in surprise and then smiled.

"You're right."

Under Ethan's displeased gaze, I packed things that were important to me and left resolutely.

Brenda knelt on the ground, picking up Legos one by one, tears streaming down her face.

Ethan helped her up and threw the Lego blocks into the trash can in anger.

"She doesn't know how fortunate she is. Let her go! Let's see how far she can go!"
