On our seventh wedding anniversary, Ethan Sean, my husband, replaced the imported life-saving drug for me with vitamin C.
I was rushed into the ER and made it, but the baby in my belly didn't.
After leaving the ICU, I sent Ethan the divorce paper I had prepared.
He was finally willing to talk to me.
In the video chat, his childhood sweetheart cried brokenheartedly.
"Yara, I'm sorry I almost hurt you. Can you please not blame Ethan?"
Ethan wiped her tears gently as if he had done it many times. When he turned to me, he looked impatient.
"It's nothing. Don't make a big deal out of this!"
The next time I saw him was after I was discharged from the hospital.
"Why is our place so messed up?"
That was the first time Ethan had returned home that month.
He seemed to have forgotten that I had just been discharged from the hospital and only got home half an hour earlier than him.
Ethan had severe mysophobia. When he touched the table and saw some dust on his fingers, he frowned as expected.
"You have ten minutes to clean this place!"
Mr. Sean, who had always stood above everyone else, was as authoritative as ever when giving orders.
I glanced at the place where I could never call home and felt no desire to clean up.
No matter how clean the house was, Ethan would still be here only on the 15th of every month.
While I was updating myself with the recent news on the couch, Ethan came out of the study.
He stared at me with displeasure for a few moments before he took out a small gift box from his pocket.
"I forgot to give this to you when I got back."
He still sounded condescending. He thought the pearls in the box would make him forgive him as usual.
I didn't accept it.
I knew it was for Brenda Hunter, but the latter didn't like it. So, Ethan wanted me to have it.
Ethan used to like selecting jewelry for me, and he said his wife deserved the best things in the world.
But later, I could only get things Brenda didn't want.
"What do you mean?"
Ethan lost his patience.
I put away my phone and looked at him in his eyes.
"Let's get a divorce while the City Hall staff is still on work."
Ever since Ethan took control of the Sean Group, I couldn't even have a chance to see him. Since he came back today, I must get a divorce.
"Yara, you are a grownup. Why are you always making a fuss like this?"
"Brenda is busier than me every day. So it's inevitable that she'll make mistakes at work. Plus, you're doing fine, aren't you?"
Ethan pulled at his tie and forced himself to sit opposite me.
So, he thought it was only a minor mistake made by Brenda that caused my near death.
When he was video chatting with me, I saw the drug I asked him to buy on his desk.
If he had cared about me, he would have brought that box of drugs to visit me in the hospital.
Ever since Brenda returned and helped him secure his position as the CEO of the Sean Group, Ethan had begun to stay further from me.
They attended all important occasions together and were regarded as a lovely couple by others.
While I, his secretly married wife, could neither offer him help nor make him proud.
I knew that an orphan like me wasn't worthy of Ethan. Brenda suited him better.
Understandably, men are attracted to brilliant women.
But Ethan had already married me and had a child with me.
I rubbed the scar on my hand and felt sarcastic.
Seeing that I didn't make a scene as before, Ethan thought I would give in.
"Daniel won the piano competition. Did you buy him a gift?"
I had no idea that Daniel participated in the competition, so I didn't prepare any gifts for him.
I smiled slightly.
"No."
But my reaction only made Ethan think of me as being shameless.
"Yara Garret! That's enough! You've gone too far!"
I looked at him, amused.
As soon as Daniel was born, he began to live with Brenda. In Ethan's eyes, a woman like me wasn't qualified to raise the heir of the Sean family.
Brenda, who was engaged with Ethan when she was a child, was the real daughter-in-law recognized by the Sean family.
The boy I gave birth to had to call someone else mom, and I could only stay away and watch him grow up.
The fact was that only when Ethan took me back to Sean's residence did I have the opportunity to see my son from afar.
In order to see Daniel, I secretly ran to the kindergarten but was driven away by the Sean family. Even the police came.
I cried and begged Ethan, but he asked me to wait a little longer.
And now, my son is already six years old.
"Do you consider Daniel your son or not? Can't you be more caring to him? Or you no longer care about your son?"
Ethan's words rendered me speechless.
"I don't care about my son?
"You people deprived me of my right to be a mother!" I shouted in my heart.
I took out the Lego blocks that I had prepared long ago and handed them to him.
"It doesn't matter. I've never lived with him. He only knows Brenda as his mother. You should give his mother a grand wedding."
Everyone knew that Ethan was married and had a six-year-old child with Brenda.
Since they didn't have the wedding ceremony, people just thought that the one who was secretly married to Ethan was Brenda.
Neither the Hunter nor the Sean family explained to others.
Therefore, even if I came out and claimed myself to be Daniel's biological mother, people would only think I was a lunatic.
My cold attitude enraged Ethan.
"Yara! If you are sick, go to the hospital and get treated. Stop being so weird all day long!"
Losing all patience, he got up and left.
I didn't want to wait another month to get a divorce. This marriage had drained all my energy.
I hurried to take his hand. Ethan paused, and a hint of tenderness flashed across his face.
I rubbed my eyes and thought I saw it wrong.
"Ethan, I'm serious. Let's get a divorce!"
His face was still sullen when he shook my hand away.
"How many times do I have to tell you to stop making trouble?"
"Do you know how hard I have worked for the past seven years? If it weren't for Brenda, I wouldn't even know how I died. Why don't you understand the interests involved?"
"I've already promised you that you can raise the next child if you have one. It's your own fault that you couldn't get pregnant!"
"Once my company is listed, Brenda will leave. I will also disclose your identity to everyone!"
I had heard those remarks countless times.
I always believed what he promised me.
The price of my naivety was that I could no longer be a mother.
I touched my belly and smiled sadly.
"You only come back once a month. How could I get pregnant?"
"It took me so much effort to get pregnant again, but I lost it because of my old illness."
During the years of being separated from my son, I could only rely on Brenda to know how Daniel was doing.
It was thanks to Brenda when he was doing well.
If Daniel got sick or acted naughty, Ethan would blame me for imparting my bad genes to the boy.
After arguing with him and being hurt countless times, I finally admitted that Brenda raised Daniel well. He was better than I could have imagined.
I secretly sought medical help to monitor my ovarian follicles. I took many pills to regulate my menstruation, just so that I could be lucky enough to conceive Ethan's child on the day he came back every month.
I thought that with another child, I would be able to see a ray of light from the dark abyss and find a little comfort.
As for whether I could get the recognition of the Sean family and be Mrs. Sean, it was no longer important.
However, my poor unborn baby was gone.
Ethan suddenly turned his head to look at me, his face full of disbelief.
His eyes turned to look at the bedroom, where he could see the mess I made when I crawled out to call for help.
He lowered his eyes and avoided to look at me in the eyes.
I was surprised that he would feel guilty.
It seemed that he was well aware of what he had done that night.
He didn't answer my call when I told him I wasn't feeling well.
Later, I saw Brenda's post. Ethan was with her on a boat that day.
My three-month-old unborn baby stopped breathing because of my transient shock.
"Why didn't you tell me you were pregnant?"
Before I could answer him, he unclenched his clenched fists and said, "It's better you lost it. Your health doesn't allow you to have another child, let alone raising one."
