Chapter 5

Lunaclaire’s eyes widened as the sleek black car rolled to a stop in front of a towering, modern building. The concrete and glass structure reflected the late afternoon sun, casting long shadows on the ground. It was unlike anything she had ever seen—a far cry from the humble life she had known in the pack.

Claude stepped out of the car first, his movements fluid and assured. He reached back to open the door for Lunaclaire, offering her a quiet smile.

“Welcome to my home.”

Lunaclaire hesitated for a moment before stepping out of the car. The place seemed alien to her, too polished, too perfect, but as her gaze traveled up the building, she could almost feel the weight of his past pressing down on the structure.

The entrance was grand, with a high ceiling and marble floors. She followed Claude inside, her footsteps echoing in the silence. There were no sounds of life, no hint of warmth—just an overwhelming sense of isolation, much like the man who owned the place.

“This is…” she trailed off, trying to find the right words. “It’s beautiful.”

Claude gave a half-smile, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “It’s just a place to live. Nothing more.”

He led her through a spacious living area, past large windows that looked out onto a breathtaking view of the city skyline. The apartment was meticulously furnished—elegant yet cold. Every piece of decor seemed chosen for its value rather than any personal attachment. It was the kind of place someone would design to escape, to hide.

Lunaclaire couldn’t help but notice the absence of any personal touches. No family pictures, no mementos, nothing that would signify a life beyond these walls. It was as if Claude had sealed himself away from everything he once knew.

He stopped in front of a wide balcony and gestured for her to join him. As she stepped outside, the cool breeze hit her face, and she inhaled deeply. The city stretched out before them, lights twinkling in the distance like stars.

Claude leaned against the railing, his profile sharp against the dimming sky. “I’ve lived here for years,” he said quietly. “After… everything.”

Lunaclaire frowned, her curiosity piqued. “What happened?”

He didn’t immediately respond, his gaze distant. When he spoke again, his voice was low, almost as if he was confessing a painful truth to the wind.

“I was once part of a pack,” Claude began, his tone flat. “I had a family, a place where I belonged. But that all changed when I was betrayed by those I trusted most.”

Lunaclaire’s heart twisted with sympathy. She could feel the weight of his words, knowing too well the sting of betrayal herself.

“What happened?” she asked again, her voice gentle.

Claude turned to face her, his golden eyes intense. “I was Alpha in a pack once, a small, tight-knit group. I had everything—a mate, a family, loyalty. But one day, everything fell apart. I found out that my mate had been seeing another wolf behind my back. She helped him challenge me and I was defeated easily, because she put substance in my food that weakened me. And the worst thing is that wolf is my little brother."

Lunaclaire's breath caught. “That’s…” She didn’t have the words. She could understand the crushing weight of rejection, but this—this was a different level of cruelty.

Claude continued, his voice hardening. “After that, my wolf refused to speak to me. It was as if everything I once had shattered in an instant. My bond with him broke. I became a lone wolf—both in body and soul. I poured myself into creating a life here, in this world, as a human. It became my focus. Building this… apartment, this world. It became all that I had left.”

Lunaclaire could see it now—the distance in his eyes, the way his shoulders tensed as he spoke. It wasn’t just pain from the betrayal. It was the suffocating loneliness that had followed it.

“But you…” she began carefully, “you still help me. You still fight with your wolf.”

Claude’s expression darkened, a shadow passing over his features. “He only comes out when you need help,” he admitted, his voice tight. “When I saw your struggle, your pain… something in me broke free. For the first time in years, he’s willing to fight. For you.”

Lunaclaire’s heart swelled with a mix of gratitude and awe. She hadn’t realized until now just how deep Claude’s own scars ran. It wasn’t just her who had been betrayed; it was him, too.

“I don’t know what you’ve been through,” she whispered, “but I’m glad you’re here.”

Claude’s gaze softened, and for the first time in a long while, the guarded walls around him seemed to crack, just slightly. “I’m glad you’re here, too, Lunaclaire.”

It wasn’t just the words that made her heart race, but the sincerity in his voice—the rawness of the connection that had been forming between them. In his eyes, she saw something more than just a warrior or an ally. She saw a man who had been broken, just like her, but was still willing to rebuild.

Lunaclaire took a step closer, her voice barely above a whisper. “Claude…”

He looked at her, his expression unreadable, but she could sense the tension in the air—the unspoken emotions that hung between them.

“What happens now?” she asked, her pulse quickening.

Claude didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he stepped closer, his presence overwhelming and magnetic. The air around them seemed to crackle with an intensity she couldn’t ignore.

For a moment, the space between them disappeared, and Lunaclaire realized just how much she had come to rely on Claude—not just for survival, but for the strength to move forward. She had been broken once, and so had he, but together, they could rebuild.

“What happens now,” Claude said softly, “is up to you, Lunaclaire. You want revenge? You want to take back everything they’ve stolen from you?”

Lunaclaire nodded, her jaw set with determination. “Yes. I will make them pay.”

Claude’s lips twitched into the faintest of smiles. “Then we will do it together.”

As they stood there, the wind brushing past them, Lunaclaire felt something inside her shift. She wasn’t alone anymore. Claude was no longer just an ally; he was someone who understood her pain, someone who would stand by her side as they took on the world.

The road ahead would be long and fraught with danger, but with Claude and his wolf by her side, Lunaclaire finally felt ready to fight back. She had a new purpose. And this time, she wasn’t just fighting for revenge. She was fighting for herself.

Chapter 6

The air was thick with tension as Lunaclaire stood before the gates of the Thistle Thorne pack territory. Her pulse quickened, her emotions swirling like a storm in the pit of her stomach. It had been weeks since she had been cast out, weeks since she had been rejected by the only family she had ever known. But now, she had come to reclaim what was rightfully hers—her belongings, her inheritance, the money she had generously given to the pack, all of it.

Claude, ever by her side, stood a few paces behind, his eyes narrowed and his posture stiff. "Are you sure about this?" he asked softly, his voice a grounding force amidst the chaos inside her.

Lunaclaire nodded, her gaze unwavering. "I’m sure. Everything they’ve taken from me, every part of me that they thought they could use… I’m taking it all back. Starting with what’s mine."

With a deep breath, she walked toward the gates, her strides confident, but her heart a heavy weight in her chest. She had spent years leading this pack, giving everything she had—her time, her effort, her love—and now, she was nothing more than an outcast. But they couldn’t take her dignity, not this time.

As she stepped into the pack grounds, familiar faces turned to look at her. Some wore expressions of guilt, others of indifference, and a few even sneered at her, their cold eyes betraying the deep-rooted disdain they now felt for their former Luna. Her presence in their midst was a reminder of all that had gone wrong, a symbol of their betrayal.

She was greeted by a few of the pack members, including Lena, her former beta, who had been one of the key figures in her rejection. Lena’s eyes flickered uneasily as Lunaclaire approached.

"You’re here for your things, I take it?" Lena’s voice was clipped, almost bitter.

Lunaclaire stood tall, her posture demanding respect. "Yes. I want everything that belongs to me, including my inheritance. I’ve been more than generous with the pack, but this is mine."

Lena's lips pressed into a thin line, but she didn't argue. "Of course. We’ll get your things. Follow me."

The walk to Lunaclaire’s old residence was silent, the tension between them palpable. When they reached her quarters, Lunaclaire didn’t hesitate. She moved swiftly, gathering her personal items, her clothes, some books, and finally, the lockbox that contained the documents and everything from her parents' inheritance.

The large, ornate box had always been a symbol of her family's wealth and legacy—money that she had used not only to support herself but to help the pack when they needed it most.

Lena eyed her carefully. "Are you sure you want to take everything? You've already been given more than enough."

Lunaclaire spun around, her eyes flashing. "I’ve been more than generous, Lena. And now, I want what’s mine." She paused for a moment, her voice dropping lower, full of quiet fury. "You don’t get to decide what’s enough. Not anymore."

Lena opened her mouth to argue but thought better of it. She stepped aside, allowing Lunaclaire to collect her things.

Everything was going according to plan, until Lunaclaire reached for the velvet-lined jewelry box on her dresser. Her hand froze. The contents were not what she had left behind. The valuable jewelry that had once adorned her neck, her wrists, her fingers—the pieces from her late mother and father—were gone.

Her breath hitched, and her heart raced. She rummaged through the box desperately, but there was no mistaking it. The rings, the necklaces, the heirloom bracelets, all the precious items she had held dear—all of it was missing.

Lunaclaire’s chest tightened with an overwhelming sense of betrayal. She slammed the jewelry box shut, her fingers trembling with barely contained rage. She spun on Lena, her voice rising with fury. "Where are they? What did you do with my jewelry?"

Lena’s expression faltered, and for a brief moment, Lunaclaire could see guilt flicker in her eyes. But then, Lena quickly masked it, her stance defensive. "I don’t know what you’re talking about," she said flatly, though her voice trembled ever so slightly.

Lunaclaire’s lips curled into a snarl, her wolf, still distant and silent, stirring at the back of her mind. The beast within her was awake now, feeling the injustice, the betrayal—and it wanted to break free.

"You don’t get to lie to me, Lena!" Lunaclaire’s voice was a snarl now, and she could feel the power building in her chest. She had always been in control, had always been the Luna, but now, she was stripped of all that, and it was this loss that fueled her anger. "Those are my family’s heirlooms. My inheritance. I entrusted the pack with those because I believed in you. I trusted you. So where are they?"

Lena swallowed, clearly nervous now. She stepped back, her gaze shifting to the pack members watching from the door. "I-I don’t know. I didn’t—"

Lunaclaire’s patience snapped. Her voice became deadly calm, a warning laced with venom. "If you don’t tell me where they are, I swear, I will make sure everyone knows what you’ve done."

Lena froze, her eyes darting nervously. "I... I can’t tell you. It’s not... it’s not just me. Others are involved."

Lunaclaire’s eyes narrowed, her heart pounding. "Others? What others?"

Lena shook her head, her eyes avoiding Lunaclaire’s piercing gaze. "I’m not the only one who took from you. Some of the higher-ranking pack members... they thought you wouldn’t notice. They thought it would be easy to take what they wanted and leave you with nothing."

Lunaclaire’s breath came in ragged gasps, her hands balled into fists. She could feel her wolf clawing at the surface, her power rising in tandem with her fury. They had taken so much from her, but this? This was the breaking point.

Her voice trembled with rage. "You’re all just thieves. Liars. Betrayers. And you will pay for this."

Lena opened her mouth to protest, but Lunaclaire cut her off.

"No," she spat. "You’ve already taken everything from me. Now, I’m taking it back—everything I’m owed."
