My mother-in-law, Sandy Thomas, stole the keys to the wedding house that I share with my husband, Brian Thomas. She and Brian secretly let his older sister, Zoe, and her family move in without telling me.
When I found out, I was livid and confronted them.
Zoe just shrugged and said, “Brian’s my brother. I’m staying at my brother’s house. It’s none of your business.”
Sandy looked at me like I was being unreasonable and said, “Angelina, now that you’re married to Brian, that house belongs to him. Zoe, just stay there. Let’s see who dares to stop you.”
Brian added, “We’re family. The house is empty anyway. Why are you making such a fuss?”
After four years of marriage and putting up with Sandy’s nonsense, I might have let it slide with other issues. But this house was bought for me by my parents, who scrimped and saved to get it.
I wasn’t going to let them just take over.
Suddenly, a buried thought sprang to mind. I remembered Sandy’s smirking face and knew I wouldn’t let them walk all over me this time.
Clair had told me she saw people moving into my wedding house, but I hadn’t believed it. The house was a pre-marriage gift from my parents. After we married, Brian and I rented a place near his work for convenience. So, the wedding house had been sitting empty.
Plus, I had the keys and had cleaned the house just last month. There’s no way someone could have moved in.
But Clair wouldn’t joke about something like this, so I rushed over to the house after work.
When I opened the door, I was shocked to see Zoe lounging on the sofa I’d picked out, wearing pajamas. Zoe’s daughter, Lisa, was scribbling on the once-pristine white walls with colored pens, turning them into a colorful mess.
My blood boiled, but I managed to ask, “Zoe, what are you doing in my house?”
Zoe sat up, coldly silent.
Just then, Sandy came out of a room holding some fruit. She gave me a stern look and said, “I let Zoe and her family move in. The house was empty, and you weren’t using it.”
I didn’t say a word as I walked into the master bedroom. Seeing the messy bed, I stormed back out and demanded, “Who’s been using my master bedroom?”
Zoe scoffed, “What’s the big deal? I’m staying in my brother Brian’s house.”
Sandy joined in, “Angelina, you’re being unreasonable. Zoe’s family isn’t a stranger. What’s wrong with them using the master bedroom?”
I was shaking with anger. “This house was bought by my parents. Brian didn’t spend a dime on it. How did it become your house? And I had the keys put away. How did you get them?”
Then I remembered that a month ago, Sandy had visited, saying she missed my daughter, Tracy. I saw her leaving my bedroom looking flustered.
“Did you take the keys from my house when you visited?” I asked Sandy.
Sandy hesitated for a moment but then stubbornly said, “Yes, I took them. It’s my son’s house. Why shouldn’t I take the keys?”
“You took my keys! And why didn’t you tell me? I never agreed to you living in my house!” I pressed on.
Sandy immediately started yelling, “Angelina, how dare you talk to me like that? Is this how your parents taught you to speak to your elders?
“What’s this about your house? It’s going to be Brian’s anyway. Do I need your permission to use his keys? Everything you have now is because of Brian.
“Wait here. I’m calling Brian right now. I don’t believe his own sister can’t stay in his house.”
Sandy pulled out her phone and dialed Brian’s number.
As soon as the call connected, Sandy began wailing, “Brian, come home quickly. Angelina is bullying me. She even accused me of stealing her keys. Is this fair? After all the effort I put into raising you, now your wife is making trouble for me? Is this how it’s supposed to be?”
Zoe chimed in, “Brian, you need to handle your wife. Look at how she treated Mom—like she’s a threat. What kind of wife talks to her mother-in-law like that? You need to teach her a lesson.”
Honestly, I was disgusted by Sandy and Zoe’s behavior. They knew exactly how to twist the situation.
“Mom, can you tell me what’s going on?” Brian asked on the phone.
I felt a wave of relief. At least Brian was thinking clearly.
Sandy had put the call on speaker, and as soon as Brian finished speaking, I jumped in, “Dear, do you know that Zoe’s moved into our wedding house?”
There was a brief pause on Brian’s end before he mumbled, “Oh, Mom mentioned it to me.”
I was crushed. “So, you knew? You’ve been keeping this from me?”
Brian’s voice grew irritated. “What do you mean, keeping it from you? We just didn’t get around to telling you. Angelina, you’re always so petty. We’re family. If my sister needs a place, let her stay. And don’t take it out on my mom. She has high blood pressure and heart issues. If she gets sick over this, I’ll be really upset. I’m busy right now, so we’ll talk when I get back.”
When the call ended, Sandy smirked at Zoe and said, “Zoe, Brian says you can stay, so just stay put. Let’s see who dares to make you leave.”
I was furious. “How can you be so unreasonable? Zoe, if you don’t have a place to live, you should rent or buy one. What gives you the right to live in my house?”
Zoe acted like she didn’t hear me and kept scrolling on her phone.
Sandy sneered at me. “Now you’re worried? Last month, Zoe asked you for $20,000 for a down payment. You refused and even stopped Brian from helping. What were you thinking?”
I almost laughed out of frustration. So that’s what this was about.
Last month, Brian told me Zoe wanted to borrow money for a down payment. I said if he wanted to lend it, that was up to him; I didn’t mind.
But it wasn’t about me being difficult. First, they already owe us thousands of dollars that they haven’t paid back. Second, Zoe’s husband is a gambler with hundreds of thousands in debt. They’re constantly scrambling for money, and their credit is terrible. There’s no way they could get a loan to buy a house.
Their story about needing money for a house was just a cover. They were trying to get money from us. Only a fool would lend them money.
Brian knew their situation, but I couldn’t understand why he even considered helping them.
However, if he wanted to waste his own money, I wouldn’t stop him. After all, I haven’t seen a cent of his money since we married.
It seemed Brian hadn’t given them the money after all.
I was so frustrated I had a headache. “So, because Brian didn’t lend you money, you decided to take over my house?”
Sandy jumped in immediately, “Brian wouldn’t have refused to lend to his sister if it weren’t for you blocking him.”
Zoe added, “Exactly. My brother said you have tens of thousands saved up and wouldn’t lend any. Now that I have nowhere to stay, I’m living in his house. What’s it to you?”
Zoe claiming she has no money and blaming us for her situation was outrageous.
I realized that this family was completely unreasonable and impossible to reason with.
I gave Zoe a cold look and said, “You and your husband have terrible credit and you think you can get a mortgage? You’ve got to be kidding.”
Zoe jumped up, “Don’t look down on us! Why shouldn’t we be able to buy a house?”
Sandy joined in, “Don’t belittle my daughter and son-in-law. If they wanted to make money, they could. What about you? Aren’t you spending Brian’s money?”
I almost laughed. Trying to reason with these two was an insult to my intelligence.
It was clear that getting my house back would be a long process.
I swallowed my anger and decided to calm them down first. “For the sake of family, I’ll let you stay for one month. After that, you must move out.”
Without waiting for their response, I turned and walked out, keeping my face stern.
As I closed the door, I faintly heard Sandy’s voice, “Zoe, don’t listen to her. We’re not leaving. Let’s see what that witch can do.”
After I finally got my daughter, Tracy, to sleep, Brian came home, stumbling and smelling of alcohol.
I frowned at him. “Why are you coming back so late?”
Brian, looking grim, headed straight for the spare bedroom. “I’m sleeping here tonight.”
I followed him, demanding, “What’s the deal with letting Zoe’s family move into my house without asking me?”
Brian’s irritation was evident. “Seriously? All you can focus on is ‘my house.’ We’re married, so what’s yours is mine. Besides, the place was just sitting empty. Why make such a big deal about them staying there?”
His response left me feeling numb. “It’s not just about being petty. It’s about who Zoe and her family are. They owe us money they haven’t paid back. Last time, Jack, your brother-in-law, not only yelled at me but almost hit me. Have you forgotten all that?”
Brian sighed, clearly frustrated. “That’s all in the past. Why keep bringing it up? I’m your husband, and you keep dragging up old issues. It’s not helping anyone.”
Tears filled my eyes. “Brian, how can you talk like this? I’m being mistreated, and you’re just ignoring it? And now you’re blaming me?”
Brian’s tone softened slightly. “I’m not blaming you. I just don’t want to revisit old arguments.”
I wiped my tears. “I’m not going to argue about anything else. Just get your sister and your mom out of the house. I barely got to live in my new place, and now they’re ruining it.”
“Alright, I understand. Zoe and her family are going through a rough time. I’ll talk to her soon,” Brian said, but he didn’t make any promises. Frustrated, I headed to our bedroom.
Dealing with this family was a mess I had created. My parents had been against this marriage from the start, warning that Sandy was trouble and we’d never get along. They were right.
On our wedding day, Sandy made a scene, crying and clinging to Brian, saying she couldn’t bear to let him go. My mom was furious, saying she’d never seen anyone so upset about their child getting married. Even though I was moving far away, my mom didn’t cry as much as Sandy did over Brian.
After I gave birth, I needed time to recover, but Sandy refused to help, claiming she was too busy and sent my mom instead. I ignored her and hired a nanny. I hadn’t expected Sandy to help, and I didn’t want my mom to. But Sandy’s behavior nearly drove me to despair.
The first time Sandy visited, she complained about having a granddaughter instead of a grandson and questioned why I was eating such good food. She secretly took some of the nanny’s cooking for Zoe and her granddaughter.
The second time, Sandy criticized Tracy’s legs and tried to bind them. Despite my post-surgery pain, I forcibly took Tracy from her. Sandy tried to snatch Tracy back and even threatened me. I was in tears until the nanny intervened and pulled her away.
The third time, I told the nanny not to open the door. Sandy spent over an hour cursing outside until I called the police to make her leave.
Sandy’s bizarre actions were endless, and I could go on forever. I’d put up with a lot before, but with Sandy and Zoe trying to take over the house my parents bought, I couldn’t tolerate it any longer.
Suddenly, a buried memory popped into my mind. About a year ago, I accidentally overheard Sandy on the phone with a man, sweet-talking him with “honey” and “darling” in the most nauseating way. That was when I realized she was having an affair.
I found it disgusting, so I kept quiet. But now, with Sandy being so unreasonable, I decided it was time to reveal her secret.
The next day, I hired a private investigator to dig up evidence of Sandy’s infidelity. I also reached out to my friend Clair, who lived across the street and asked her to keep an eye on Zoe and her family. I planned to change the locks as soon as they left the house.
Clair kept watch for a week and reported that Sandy was going out frequently, but Zoe never left. I had no choice but to wait.
Soon, the private investigator delivered the results. When I saw the evidence of Sandy’s affairs, I was stunned. Over the past year, Sandy had stayed in hotels with different men more than a hundred times—about a dozen men in total. The photos and videos were shocking, showing everything from intimate moments to explicit car scenes.
I couldn’t keep this to myself. After making backups, I sent everything to Tim, Sandy’s husband, who lived far away.
Two days later, the family chat was buzzing with activity. Seeing Tim’s familiar photos and records of Sandy with other men, I had to give him credit—he was ruthless!
After a moment of silence, someone finally spoke up.
