The Dangers of Marriage: Be Strong and Resist Injustice! Chapter 1

My mother-in-law, Sandy Thomas, stole the keys to the wedding house that I share with my husband, Brian Thomas. She and Brian secretly let his older sister, Zoe, and her family move in without telling me.

When I found out, I was livid and confronted them.

Zoe just shrugged and said, “Brian’s my brother. I’m staying at my brother’s house. It’s none of your business.”

Sandy looked at me like I was being unreasonable and said, “Angelina, now that you’re married to Brian, that house belongs to him. Zoe, just stay there. Let’s see who dares to stop you.”

Brian added, “We’re family. The house is empty anyway. Why are you making such a fuss?”

After four years of marriage and putting up with Sandy’s nonsense, I might have let it slide with other issues. But this house was bought for me by my parents, who scrimped and saved to get it.

I wasn’t going to let them just take over.

Suddenly, a buried thought sprang to mind. I remembered Sandy’s smirking face and knew I wouldn’t let them walk all over me this time.

Clair had told me she saw people moving into my wedding house, but I hadn’t believed it. The house was a pre-marriage gift from my parents. After we married, Brian and I rented a place near his work for convenience. So, the wedding house had been sitting empty.

Plus, I had the keys and had cleaned the house just last month. There’s no way someone could have moved in.

But Clair wouldn’t joke about something like this, so I rushed over to the house after work.

When I opened the door, I was shocked to see Zoe lounging on the sofa I’d picked out, wearing pajamas. Zoe’s daughter, Lisa, was scribbling on the once-pristine white walls with colored pens, turning them into a colorful mess.

My blood boiled, but I managed to ask, “Zoe, what are you doing in my house?”

Zoe sat up, coldly silent.

Just then, Sandy came out of a room holding some fruit. She gave me a stern look and said, “I let Zoe and her family move in. The house was empty, and you weren’t using it.”

I didn’t say a word as I walked into the master bedroom. Seeing the messy bed, I stormed back out and demanded, “Who’s been using my master bedroom?”

Zoe scoffed, “What’s the big deal? I’m staying in my brother Brian’s house.”

Sandy joined in, “Angelina, you’re being unreasonable. Zoe’s family isn’t a stranger. What’s wrong with them using the master bedroom?”

I was shaking with anger. “This house was bought by my parents. Brian didn’t spend a dime on it. How did it become your house? And I had the keys put away. How did you get them?”

Then I remembered that a month ago, Sandy had visited, saying she missed my daughter, Tracy. I saw her leaving my bedroom looking flustered.

“Did you take the keys from my house when you visited?” I asked Sandy.

Sandy hesitated for a moment but then stubbornly said, “Yes, I took them. It’s my son’s house. Why shouldn’t I take the keys?”

“You took my keys! And why didn’t you tell me? I never agreed to you living in my house!” I pressed on.

Sandy immediately started yelling, “Angelina, how dare you talk to me like that? Is this how your parents taught you to speak to your elders?

“What’s this about your house? It’s going to be Brian’s anyway. Do I need your permission to use his keys? Everything you have now is because of Brian.

“Wait here. I’m calling Brian right now. I don’t believe his own sister can’t stay in his house.”

Sandy pulled out her phone and dialed Brian’s number.

As soon as the call connected, Sandy began wailing, “Brian, come home quickly. Angelina is bullying me. She even accused me of stealing her keys. Is this fair? After all the effort I put into raising you, now your wife is making trouble for me? Is this how it’s supposed to be?”

Zoe chimed in, “Brian, you need to handle your wife. Look at how she treated Mom—like she’s a threat. What kind of wife talks to her mother-in-law like that? You need to teach her a lesson.”

Honestly, I was disgusted by Sandy and Zoe’s behavior. They knew exactly how to twist the situation.
