"Megan, that bitch, what the hell did she do? Dad's ignoring me now!
"I swear, I'll kill that bitch! You gotta help me, once she's out of the picture, dad will have to acknowledge me!"
Uma, apprehensive, was petrified at the mention of murder.
"Cameron, stop living in a dream world. I've told you we have no connection to the Fox family. You're just my daughter.
"I went through so much trouble to get you into the Fox family, hoping you'd study hard and eventually join the Fox Group. They're a shrewd bunch. Mr. Fox is already fed up with you. If you can't learn to be discreet, they'll have no place for you."
I couldn't help but chuckle. Uma was more grounded than her delusional daughter.
But Cameron was defiant.
"Mom, you must be out of your mind. I am Mr. Fox's daughter. There must be something you're hiding.
"Megan is your daughter, right? I bet you swapped me with her when I was born. You and Megan teamed up to steal everything from me!"
Cameron's wild accusations almost made me burst out laughing.
I thought, "She must have watched too many soap operas! How dare she suggest a switched-at-birth scenario?"
Uma quickly interrupted, "Stop these thoughts!"
Cameron snapped, "I am not your daughter! I'm intelligent and accomplished. How could I possibly be a maid's daughter?
"You've been here alone and left me in the countryside for twelve years, just to control me, haven't you?"
Cameron's irredeemable delusions left me in awe.
The next day at school, I provoked her directly.
"You claim to be dad's real daughter, right? Show me a paternity test at least."
Cameron's eyes lit up. "Oh, you're feeling guilty, huh? You want me to get a paternity test? With all the similarities between me and Dad, even a fool would know I'm his real daughter!
"Since you're so persistent, I'll do it. Let's settle this once and for all."
I agreed with a smile and promptly headed to the hospital with our hair samples.
While waiting for the paternity test results, Cameron remained confident.
But when I presented the reports to her, she was dumbfounded.
"No way, why are you Dad's real daughter and not me?
"Cheating! You must have paid off the doctor to alter the results. These reports are mixed up!" Cameron accused.
I smirked. "Feel free to retest, but no matter how many times you do it, the result won't change."
Cameron argued cunningly, "Maybe Dad had two kids back then. You're just my younger sister, and I'm your real sister!"
I thought of something else.
So I said, "Cameron, Dad and I look so alike. Everyone has always acknowledged that.
"And you, being so ugly, how could you claim to be born by my parents, let alone be my sister?"
Cameron was fuming with anger.
"I'm tanned because I've been working in the fields since I was young. If I had your family's resources, I'd be fairer than you!"
Feigning surprise, I said, "Oh really? I should lend you some skin whitening products. Can't wait for you to turn fair and for dad to finally recognize you."
Satisfied, I nodded and ignored her clownish ranting.
Upon returning home, I found that Jackson unexpectedly arrived early.
There were numerous gifts for me on the table—elegant dresses, beautiful bracelets.
Most importantly, there was a guest in the house.
I was thrilled to see Vincent Stewart, my neighbor and older brother figure who had returned from studying abroad.
We had always had a close relationship since childhood.
Our families had been close for years, and Vincent used to joke that I'd be his wife when I grew up.
Now, he had grown into a tall, handsome man, already back from his studies with a successful business venture. He was like a real catch.
"Vincent, I've missed you so much!"
I rushed over, and Vincent warmly embraced me with a smile.
"I've missed you too, my Megan has grown so tall."
Jackson chuckled. "You see Vincent and forget about your old man."
I asked, "Are all these gifts from Vincent?"
Jackson nodded. "Yep, your coming-of-age party is coming up, and Vincent wants to throw you a bash. He's getting the best pastry chef in town to make your cake."
Cameron, who had been lurking in the background, muttered, "I'm an adult too, but I haven't had a coming-of-age party."
But the three of us were too engrossed in our conversation to pay her any mind.
I was basking in happiness, oblivious to Cameron's twisted face.
She was like a forgotten stray dog in the corner, growling and glaring, unwanted by anyone.
That evening, we invited Vincent for dinner.
After the meal, Vincent and I took a stroll in the yard. I needed to use the restroom, so I excused myself for a moment.
Upon my return, I found Cameron standing next to Vincent, who looked visibly annoyed while Cameron was rambling on.
I moved a little closer and hid behind a tree, eavesdropping on their conversation.
Cameron urgently said, "Vincent, I'm actually the real daughter of Mr. Fox. You should have grown up with me. Megan touched those gifts, and I found them dirty. Get me something else.
"Now that you know the truth, bring me home to meet your parents. Let's clear up this misunderstanding!"
Vincent rolled his eyes dramatically.
"Are you out of your mind? Does Mr. Fox hire a maid without investigation?
"And you look so swarthy, it's so dark out here, with that grimace on your face, I thought you were a headless ghost."
Those words shattered Cameron's facade.
I couldn't help but laugh out loud.
In the next moment, Vincent noticed me and quickly took my hand, walking away while saying, "Megan, how did your family find such a weird servant? You should fire her. What a bad luck."
Cameron yelled, "Vincent, are you blind? You've been deceived by that wench. I'm the real heiress!"
As I left with Vincent, I turned to see Cameron's expression, but all I saw was darkness.
Later that night, as I was about to sleep, Uma knocked on Jackson's bedroom door in tears.
"Mr. Fox, please save my daughter. She's about to jump off the building."
I immediately stepped out of my room.
We followed Uma to the rooftop, where we saw Cameron on the edge, her leg dangling over the side, on the brink of falling.
As we approached, she cried like a broken soul.
"I don't want to live!"
Jackson was not pleased. "What's going on here?"
Uma pleaded desperately, "Mr. Fox, please, I'm begging you. Just stabilize Cameron's emotions first."
Cameron pointed at me, crying loudly.
"Why does she get a coming-of-age party? Why does she get to eat the best cake in town? I have nothing? I'm your daughter, not her!"
Cameron continued to scream hysterically, "I work so hard, and my grades are top-notch; why don't I deserve to be your daughter? Why do you hate me so much?
"I don't eat seafood or spicy food, I'm allergic to cat hair just like you. I'm your daughter by all means!"
Uma, seemingly afraid of Jackson's anger, quickly interjected, "Cameron, stop talking nonsense! Mr. Fox, I'm sorry, Cameron is under immense study pressure. She's got some mental issues, and she's tried to commit suicide several times.
"On account of us being a single-parent family, please forgive her. Promise to let her crash Ms. Fox's coming-of-age party!"
Jackson and I exchanged a glance.
If Cameron really jumped, it would be trouble for our family.
After all, it was the rooftop of our mansion.
Jackson sighed and asked for my opinion.
I calmly smiled, "Dad, just let her join the party as well. It's just a simple gathering; I'm inviting people anyway; one more won't hurt.
"Our family has sponsored many underprivileged students before. Consider her as your goddaughter, let's fulfill her dream."
After I spoke, Cameron started screaming again.
"I don't want your charity, I want Dad to personally host my coming-of-age party! I want him to escort me down!"
Jackson looked helpless.
But I nudged his arm, and he stepped forward.
After all these years of navigating the social scene, he knew the drill.
Right now, it was about calming emotions and preventing the situation from escalating.
Jackson had a good reputation in society. If Cameron fell down from our rooftop, it would surely tarnish his reputation.
Plus, our family's publicly traded company's stock was fluctuating. If news of this nature broke out at a critical time, it would be detrimental to Jackson.
Jackson guided Cameron away from the rooftop edge. Cameron looked at me triumphantly.
As she walked by my side, she leaned in and whispered, "I've won, you can't beat me."
I smiled.
Perhaps she didn't realize that insisting on co-hosting a coming-of-age party with me would be the biggest mistake of her life.
After her suicide attempt, Cameron felt like she was part of the Fox family.
She insisted on staying in the luxurious bedroom next to mine, joining us for meals at the table with Jackson and me every day.
She changed into exquisite outfits, walking around with an air of superiority.
My classmates were puzzled and asked me privately what was going on.
Cameron jumped in, saying, "I'm now Arola City's richest man, Jackson Fox's daughter. Don't you believe!
"I'm treating everyone to a good meal today. Let's all go for tomahawk steaks at noon!"
Everyone was shocked.
"If you're Jackson's daughter, then who is Megan?"
Cameron smirked. "She must be my little sister; it doesn't matter, I don't care.
"From now on, I'm Cameron Fox. Got it?"
They all looked at her like she was crazy.
I remained calm and steady as a rock. The SATs were approaching, so I needed to focus on my studies.
At noon, Cameron took everyone out for steak, including me, thinking I'd foot the bill.
That day, though Jackson didn't say much, Cameron moved into a nice room, wore clothes, and ate, using my resources, but she had no money.
Jackson wasn't foolish enough to give her any.
