I Raised My Enemy’s Daughter for Eighteen Years Chapter 1

On the day I gave birth, I witnessed my sworn family-sister covertly switch our daughters inside the Family-controlled clinic.

I chose to say nothing.

Instead, I took her daughter into my arms and raised her as my own.

Eighteen years later, the girl I'd raised was accepted into one of the most prestigious universities in the country, her future gleaming with every advantage the Moretti name could quietly provide.

As for my own daughter, she endured abuse at the hands of my sworn family-sister; her spirit shattered, her body crippled.

During the black-tie celebration of her daughter's triumph, my sworn family-sister arrived with her disabled daughter by her side, holding a forensic blood report. She confronted me with a smug, knowing look.

"The clinic swapped our children back then. Now, it's time to fix that."

I met her gaze, offering a smile that barely touched my eyes. "Alright, we'll switch them back."

"Bianca, my mother sent some fresh eggs from the old property upstate. I thought I'd bring some over for you and Liliana."

Just like every other time, my sworn family-sister knocked on my door, her tone as warm as ever, as though warmth were simply another garment she put on before crossing the compound threshold.

Since I'd taken her daughter to raise, she'd shown up frequently, often under the guise of a casual visit. The soldiers at the front gate had long since stopped radioing ahead for her; she came and went with the easy authority of someone who believed proximity was the same thing as belonging.

More than once, she'd claimed she wanted to share parenting advice, though I knew better. Her counsel always circled back to Liliana, questions wrapped in compliments, measuring the girl's health, her moods, the small milestones a mother would notice only if she were keeping a private, desperate inventory.

……

Sometimes, she'd suggest our daughters spend time together, playing and keeping each other's company, as though the arrangement were charitable rather than compulsive.

Once, she even came knocking in the middle of the night, claiming to have had a nightmare about something happening to Liliana. I had found her standing on the stone portico in a silk robe, the floodlights catching the damp shine of her eyes, and for one unguarded moment I'd almost pitied her before I remembered what she had done to earn that grief.

Salvatore Moretti, my husband, often complained about her constant visits, saying it felt like she was punching in at work. He would say it with the signet ring turning slowly on his thumb, his attention already sliding toward whatever arrangement or sit-down occupied the rest of his evening, the domestic theater of Serafina's appearances beneath his notice.

To make things more convenient, she rented an apartment just a few blocks from the compound's outer wall, insisting that sworn family-sisters should live close for mutual support. The building was modest by Moretti standards, but it gave her a sightline to the estate's eastern gate, and I suspected she watched the cars that came and went the way a sentry watches a border.

But I knew the truth. She simply wanted to be near her daughter, Liliana, watching her every move.

I never called her out on it, letting her think she had me fooled.

So, as always, I opened the door.

There she stood in the arched doorway, graceful in a chic long dress that skimmed the marble step, holding a wicker basket of fresh eggs as if bearing an offering. The afternoon light fell across her face, and the right corner of her mouth lifted a heartbeat early, that telltale flicker I had catalogued years ago, the micro-expression that preceded every secret she intended to wield. Today, though, the weapon stayed sheathed. She was only here to orbit her daughter.

Behind her, a thin, bruised girl stood half a pace back, my daughter, her complexion pale and sickly beneath the compound's covered portico. She kept her gaze lowered, the posture of someone trained to take up as little space as possible in a world that had already decided she was an inconvenience.

My sworn family-sister had named her Arianna.
