I didn't dare to continue to recall and struggled to wake up from my dream.
When the plane landed, I took a taxi home.
It was not until late at night on the third day that Fannie came back.
"Didn't I tell you to wait for me? Why did you break your promise?"
Suddenly waking up, I had a headache and asked in a daze, "Do you want me to wait for you at the airport alone for three days and three nights?"
Fannie pursed her lips and said, "Forget it. I don't want to argue with you. Get up and cook me a bowl of noodles."
I didn't answer and rolled up my quilt, continuing to sleep.
Fannie threw away her suitcase unhappily and said, "How unfortunate I am to have married a man like you."
With that, she slammed the door and left.
I didn't set the alarm clock and slept until I woke up naturally.
According to my last routine, I would have gotten up at six o'clock, ironed her clothes, and cooked for her.
However, Fannie was not satisfied with the clothes that I had ironed. She thought Evan did a better job than me.
She thought that the light dishes I cooked were tasteless.
When the food was strong enough, she complained it was greasy and unhealthy.
The food I made in a few hours could not compare to a bowl of noodles made by Evan.
Since that was the case, there was no need for me to serve her so enthusiastically.
But today, Fannie prepared breakfast herself.
She ate her porridge without raising her head.
"I'm sad about your father's death, but you don't have to mess with me on such a day."
"What day?" I was stunned.
She took out a gift box from behind her.
"Edwin, you really disappointed me. You've even forgotten our sixth anniversary..."
Halfway through her sentence, she was stunned.
"What happened to your head?"
"When you were cooking chicken soup for Evan, I just finished dealing with my father's funeral. Altitude sickness made me roll down the hill, knocking on stones and getting wet."
I spread out my hands. "It's no big deal. His cold is more serious."
Fannie looked at me with her blue eyes, which were full of emotions that I couldn't understand.
After a long while, she said, "Let's eat first. You like seafood porridge. Let's see if you like the gift after you finish eating."
"No need. Today is July 20th, but our wedding anniversary is June 20th.
"It's been a month. By the way, I'm allergic to seafood."
I didn't want a gift that was too late.
I didn't want love and care that was too late.
It was Evan who loved seafood porridge.
It was also Evan who liked gifts.
All the time all I wanted was her company.
Fannie was silent for a moment.
"I've been too busy with work recently. I just went on a business trip to Los Angeles. Don't think too much. Evan is young. There's no need for you to mind a young man. Besides, there's nothing between me and him..."
At the mention of Evan, Fannie became talkative.
I couldn't be bothered to expose her. The two of them only booked one room on their business trip.
So I said perfunctorily, "You're right."
Sensing my attitude, Fannie was a little unhappy.
She threw down her fork and knife heavily.
"Edwin, don't be so unreasonable. You're a man, but you rely on me to feed you. What are you dissatisfied with?"
I didn't reply. I was reading the divorce agreement sent by the lawyer.
Fannie continued to lecture me. "I'm talking to you. What are you doing?
"You read stupid novels on the Internet all day long. So you're stupid as well. Can't you learn from Evan? See how smart and decent he is."
In the past, I would definitely feel inferior and sad when I heard that.
I would doubt myself and tremble with apprehension.
In the end, I would humbly apologized to Fannie.
But now, I only felt that she was annoying.
"I have something to do, so I'll go first."
"Edwin, I haven't finished yet!"
She reached out to pull me, but I avoided her touch in disgust.
She had never listened to me carefully for so many years.
Every time I was a little naggish, she would be unhappy. Then she would slam the door and leave. I was alone at home feeling sad.
She was not the only one in this house who could leave and go back as pleased.
I didn't want to see her again, so I drove straight to the lawyer's office.
After discussing the details of the assets division, I saw a message from Fannie.
"There's something urgent. Come to my company."
For me, it didn't matter if something happened to her. But if something happened to the company, I would get less money.
As soon as I arrived at the front desk, I heard a burst of laughter.
The girls at the front desk called Evan with a smile.
"Evan, you're right. As long as you send a message through Mrs. Murphy's phone, he will run over happily like a pug."
Soon Evan came out of the elevator.
"Edwin, are you here for Mrs. Murphy? She's busy and doesn't want to see outsiders."
He deliberately emphasized the word "outsider".
Now, in everyone's eyes, Evan was Fannie's acknowledged lover.
As a live-in son-in-law, I was just an outsider.
I pointed at the group of people who had laughed at me just now. "You guys, pack up and leave."
This company was founded by Fannie and I. I owned a lot of shares. It would be a piece of cake for me to sack a few employees.
Evan immediately put on a straight face.
"What right do you have to show off here? Mrs. Murphy and I will take care of everything."
I couldn't be bothered to argue. Just as I was about to call Fannie, I saw her walking over.
"Why are you here?"
I thought that she would be angry. After all, every time I came to her before, she felt that I had embarrassed her and was very impatient with me.
But this time, there seemed to be a hint of pride in her tone.
Evan was the first to complain.
"I don't know why Edwin made such a scene as soon as he arrived. He said that I seduced you and wanted to fire us."
"Edwin!" Fannie's face immediately turned cold.
"I can accept that you are stupid and ugly, but your suspicious look makes me sick."
She sighed again. "I really regret marrying you."
The girls around them covered their mouths and sneered.
Evan looked at me with a victorious look.
But it was strange that I didn't feel anything.
Or perhaps, I had already known that Fannie would say that.
When she first cheated on me, our friends advised her not to abandon a lover who started the business with her hand in hand.
She said, "Do you know how suffocating he is? Anyone who is with him can't help having an affair. He deserves to be abandoned by his family.
"He makes a fuss about everything and doesn't care about his own figure. He is a failure."
I gained weight to help her socialize.
After knowing what she had said, I felt inferior and frustrated all day long.
Food made me nauseous.
I got stomach problems because of this.
Then I didn't dare to attend any dinner party or meet anyone.
My weight was under control gradually, but my stomach disease could not be cured.
As a result, I had always been weak.
"Why don't you say anything? Are you feeling guilty? No wonder we lost Alyssa. A man like you doesn't deserve to be a husband or a father."
At the mention of the lost child, my heart suddenly ached.
Every time we quarreled, Fannie would hurt me the most effective way.
She forced me to get angry and argue with her and then laughed at my hysteria with a smug expression.
But this time, I was very calm.
"Then don't force yourself. I've already prepared the divorce agreement. Let's get a divorce."
I handed the divorce agreement to Fannie and pulled off a strand of brownish-yellow hair from her body.
Fannie was flustered slightly.
"It's not what you think..." She quickly recovered and sighed. "Don't make a fool of yourself. I don't have the patience to forgive and tolerate you again and again."
I continued to stare at her and saw that she was beginning to panic.
Then, I tried my best to remain calm and said something that I had been trying to say for a long time.
"You don't deserve to mention Alyssa. I already know the real reason why you had a miscarriage on the day I was injured."
The day of the miscarriage was the turning point of our marriage.
It was also the beginning of Fannie and Evan's affair.
I had been avoiding the cruel truth for a long time. Now, I had to make up my mind to face it.
"Edwin!" Fannie panicked.
I said despite my heartache. "Do you want me to tell the truth in front of so many people here?"
