What would you do when you woke up in the morning and there was suddenly a strange man in your room?
The instinctive reaction was to scream for help.
But I forgot that I live alone, and no one would come to save me even if I screamed until my throat hurt.
"Aah!" I hugged the blanket tightly, wrapping myself up, "Aiden Williams! You pervert!"
I opened my eyes in the morning, only to find a half-naked handsome guy standing by my bed, with wet hair. Who could handle that? Even with a super strong heart, I can't withstand this kind of test.
Maybe... I haven't woken up yet?
Let me lie down for five more minutes.
However, five minutes later, Aiden was still standing in front of me. The only difference was that the towel around his waist was loose. If I had just opened my eyes two minutes later, the towel might have fallen off. In that case, he probably wasn't wearing anything underneath. Damn, his figure was so perfect that even one more piece of clothing would be a waste of fabric.
"Aah!"
"Don't scream," Aiden covered my mouth, "Why am I in your room?"
I stared at him with wide eyes.
How... did I know?
He was asking me, but I was just as confused.
The person who drank with me last night was not him. Even if we had slept together after drinking, it shouldn't have been him. The problem was that I wasn't drunk enough to forget opening the door for him. How did he come in?
A chill ran down my spine, and I suddenly felt a little scared. I pushed him away and moved silently towards the head of the bed. "You were hiding in my house before I got home? Under the bed or in the closet? Aiden... I have nothing against you. If you want to harm me for money, you've got the wrong person!"
Aiden looked at me with a helpless expression. "Are you still drunk?"
"I wish I was!" I muttered.
This was too scary.
He was very handsome, but his good looks couldn't lessen the shock this situation was causing me.
"Did I come here while dreaming?" I began to doubt myself. "What time did I get up to open the door for you? You came to me without clothes on, even if you were catching someone cheating, you wouldn't be in such a hurry..."
The words "Catching someone cheating" broke the cold expression on Aiden's face. "I got out of the shower, opened the bathroom door, and found myself here."
I was speechless.
He might as well have knocked me out.
"I'm 26, not 3," I said, even though he was looking at me like I was a fool, but I couldn't let him get to me. I was just waking up and got scared again, so my brain wasn't working very well. "If you want me to believe you, you should at least make it sound somewhat believable.
"The place I live is 5.8 kilometers away from your house. I didn't drive. If you don't believe me, you can go to the parking lot to check. It takes 20 minutes by taxi and 1 hour by bus. I dressed like this just to deceive you. Is that reasonable?" Aiden looked down at the towel around his waist and added, "It's not about catching someone cheating."
That made sense.
A normal person wouldn't do such a stupid thing.
Aiden said, "I've explained my side, now it's your turn to explain yours."
The pressure was on me, and I started to feel nervous again. "I... I have nothing to say. I just drank a little and slept. I didn't do anything."
Damn it.
Aiden was the son of my mom's colleague. We have known each other since we were young.
He was the kind of kid that parents referred to as "the child of someone else," who skipped a year of high school and was the top scorer on paper that year. Although we met when we were still wearing diapers, we haven't seen each other much since we grew up, as I didn't get into the top high school, and we went to different universities in different cities. We only met at a reunion of our junior high school classmates.
Last month, Aiden's father celebrated his birthday, and I went to pick up my mom. I ran into Aiden at the entrance of the restaurant.
My mom said I didn't have a boyfriend yet, and Aiden's father said Aiden was single, too. The two of them hit it off immediately and wanted to set us up. My face was so stiff from smiling, and Aiden didn't say a single word.
As expected, a few days later, Aiden's father arranged a place for us to eat.
My mom kept praising Aiden in front of me every day, like a mantra, and I was under a spell, so I agreed to make time to meet him, my childhood sweetheart, who I hadn't seen for many years.
But that day, I was stood up.
I had gone from appetizers to dessert when Aiden hurriedly arrived at the restaurant. His excuse that day was as unreliable as today, saying that he had a rear-end collision on the way.
It was a huge embarrassment.
I would rather he had refused the arranged blind date, rather than insidiously stabbing me in the heart.
But sometimes fate was so strange that even though I was played by Aiden that day, I met my current fling by chance.
We had only known each other for a month, and we were still in the friend stage, so I called him "ambiguous partner".
"I swear, I really don't know what went wrong," I said. It was more important to solve the current problem first. "Do you suspect that I'm doing something supernatural?"
I suddenly lifted the blanket, knelt on the edge of the bed, and made a gun gesture with my hand towards Aiden's heart, saying, "Aiden, fall in love with me."
Aiden was speechless.
I proved my innocence. "See, I don't have any magic."
Aiden looked away. "Give me your phone. I'll call my assistant to bring me some clothes."
"Okay," I reached under the pillow and handed him the phone.
He turned away to make the call. It was then that I realized I was only wearing a revealing nightgown. Of course, I slept however I felt comfortable.
My cheeks burned, and I slipped into the bathroom to change clothes. The mirror reflected my hangover-ridden face, with my hair looking like it had been blown up.
Never mind, he never really liked me.
When I was washing up, Aiden was in the living room. Someone knocked on the door, it might be his assistant bringing the clothes.
There was no movement for a while, and I thought he was embarrassed to change clothes in the living room and was waiting for me to come out of the bathroom.
I didn't linger for too long. I took the hairdryer and prepared to dry my hair in the living room. However, the person outside the door was not Aiden's assistant, but Dean Taylor, my ambiguous partner.
In the moment when our eyes met, I lost myself.
Dean's face looked a bit grim, but he still maintained his politeness. "Cloe, he is..."
"He... He's my cousin!" My mouth ran ahead of my brain again. "He stayed at my place last night. He got drunk and threw up all over himself, and his clothes are still in the washing machine."
The assistant hadn't arrived yet, and Aiden was still only wearing a towel. He looked back at me, and I gave him a wink, hoping he wouldn't ruin my budding relationship.
"Take a seat," Aiden invited Dean into the house, and he went to the bathroom himself.
Fortunately, he didn't embarrass me. I let out a sigh of relief and looked at Dean, smiling, "Why are you here so early?"
Dean said, "I got up early today and wanted to see you, so I prepared breakfast for you."
I thought of my just-washed underwear still in the basin, and Aiden must have seen it, so I was absent-minded. I didn't feel much for Dean's sweet talk. "Thanks, I have to go to work soon. See you tonight."
Dean put down the breakfast and gently said, "I'm going for a job interview at a new company today, call you after work."
"Bye." I looked at him as he went into the elevator and closed the door, then ran to the bathroom and knocked on the door twice. "He's gone, come out."
I felt a little weird saying it. It sounded like Aiden was a hidden mistress. But I hadn't started a relationship with Dean, so he wasn't my boyfriend.
Aiden, on the other hand, was calm and composed, even though he was only wearing a towel, he looked very elegant.
He had a great figure.
I heard that the pectoral muscles are soft and fluffy when fully relaxed, I wondered if it was true.
"Ahem," I pretended to check the time. "Where's your assistant? Call him again to hurry up?"
"There's a traffic jam, it's useless to call him." Aiden glanced at the breakfast on the table. "Was that person your boyfriend?"
I hadn't had breakfast with Dean yet, so he didn't know that I didn't like milk.
"Although he's not yet, it's pretty close, so you can rest assured that I don't have that intention towards you. Last time I went on a date with you, it was totally because I was forced to do so by my mother," I coughed again. "You must have been forced by your parents as well," I added.
Aiden didn't say anything.
I didn't engage in small talk. The living room was quiet in the early morning.
For a while, my relationship with Aiden was actually quite good, but for some reason, we became distant later on.
At the class reunion, we weren't at the same table, so we didn't talk during meals, but Aiden drove me home that night. My mother even mistook me for having a secret boyfriend.
Aiden's assistant, Max, came to my rescue. As Aiden went to the bathroom to change clothes without changing his expression, I acted very calmly, taking a bottle of mineral water from the fridge and handing it to Max.
Max said, "Madam, I have brought a few more clothes for Mr. Williams and put them here for backup."
I had a mouthful of water and couldn't say anything.
Max noticed that my expression was not very pleasant, and quickly explained, "Madam, please don't misunderstand. This is the first time I have sent clothes to Mr. Williams. If I get used to it, I will definitely get up half an hour earlier. It's because I have no experience that I am late."
I almost choked on my water. "First, Aiden and I are not in a romantic relationship. Second, although this situation can easily lead to misunderstandings, and I can't explain it clearly, it's definitely not what you think. He didn't stay overnight at my place yesterday, and he won't in the future. Third... his underwear fell out, you can help him pick it up."
Max packed the scattered clothes back into the bag, trying to leave them all in my house.
"Take it away, not a single thing is allowed to stay," I said, taking the lead.
Max had no choice but to give up.
Aiden changed his clothes. Although I had already seen him without clothes, he looked even more handsome in a suit.
"Not going to work?"
He was going to send me to work, so I should be polite. "Is it convenient?"
"Yes."
"Then I'll catch a ride."
With strange things happening, I had no mood to do anything, let alone date. Dean had invited me to dinner several times, but I found excuses to decline.
I moved back to my parents' house because I was afraid to live alone, whether ghosts existed or not.
After a few days of calming down, my anxious heart settled down, and life returned to normal. I couldn't keep thinking about Aiden all the time, or something would go wrong sooner or later.
Dean pursued me very earnestly, sending flowers to me every few days. He had helped me a lot, so I invited him out for a drink. Coincidentally, the company he had just interviewed for was in the same building as Aiden's company. As soon as he got into the car, I saw Aiden.
Aiden was followed by a few people, probably going to a social event. While he was waiting for the car, he glanced in this direction. I knew he couldn't possibly recognize my car, but I instinctively hid, wishing I could hide under the car.
"Cloe, what's wrong?" Dean had been bending down to tie his seatbelt and hadn't noticed Aiden.
After Aiden got into the car, I relaxed my body. "Nothing, just picking up my phone."
"This car is pretty new, is it a new purchase?"
"It's been six months. My father gave it to me as a birthday present. I don't drive it often."
"You invited me for a drink but you're driving yourself, it seems like you don't plan on drinking," Dean asked casually. "Cloe, have you been avoiding me lately?"
I was not avoiding him; I was avoiding Aiden, but I couldn't tell him that. "Why would I avoid you? I've been too busy with work these days. I just dropped off my mom for her yoga class and came to see you on the way. I didn't think too much about it."
Dean said gently, "That's good. I thought I accidentally said something wrong and you hated me."
"How could it be?" I smiled.
"Does your cousin still live at your house?"
"...He left early. He only stayed for one night. After all, it's not very convenient." I changed the topic. "Driving myself doesn't affect drinking with you. I'll call a designated driver to take me home."
Sometimes, the more you tried to avoid someone, the more unexpectedly you met him.
I brought Dean to a familiar bar, and we were chatting happily when a friend called me. I wanted to find a quiet place to answer the phone, but I ran into Aiden outside the restroom. A pretty girl was flirting with him.
He lit a cigarette and looked at me directly when he raised his head, with no barrier in his gaze.
The air was filled with the smell of alcohol, even the high-and-mighty Aiden had descended to earth.
His smoking appearance looked a bit seductive, so I decided to leave as soon as possible. "Hi, what a coincidence, see you later!"
The corridor was long, and I could feel that Aiden had been looking at me. It was hard to describe his gaze.
Dean was witty and talkative. I had drunk a few more glasses of wine. When he suggested going to my house, I had the designated driver take me to my parents' house.
Tomorrow was the weekend, so I turned off the alarm and planned to sleep till I woke up naturally.
I hugged a stuffed animal to sleep, but when I woke up, I found something wrong, because the texture was not quite right. It was a man! My sleepiness was instantly scared away.
