With Valentine’s Day approaching, my husband, Edwin Welles, finally freed up his schedule and agreed to spend the holiday with me.
I joked that he must be the busiest man in the world. After all, the acting chairman had no time for the actual chairman.
However, as soon as we entered the cinema, his phone rang.
With just a single glance at the screen, a trace of panic appeared on his normally composed face.
“Honey, a serious problem has come up with the tech project. I have to go back and deal with it.”
I watched him walk out through the ticket checkpoint.
The surrounding noise of the crowd made my chest feel tight.
All of the company’s tech projects utilized my father’s patents.
He was the dean of the top research institute and the company’s chairman, yet he had not received any news of a problem.
What could Edwin, a research novice, possibly need to go back to handle?
I opened the phone tracker app and followed him.
I would just have to see for myself what this “serious problem” really was!
As I watched him gradually deviate from the course through the app on my phone, my heart sank.
Fortunately, after many twists and turns, I was finally led back to my husband, Edwin Welles’, family home.
As I approached the Welles family home, I saw it was decked out with twinkling lights and flowers for a wedding.
My heart sank to my stomach.
Edwin was their only son, and he had married me long ago.
Who in the Welles family was getting married?
I quickly walked toward the door, but a doorman stretched out his arm to block me.
“This is a private event. You can only come in if you have an invitation.”
I was stunned for a moment. Then, I forced a smile and said, “I’m Edwin’s wife.”
The doorman laughed scornfully and pushed me with a mocking expression.
“Edwin is getting married today, and the bride is Amy. She’s the chairwoman of Skyreach Technologies. Who are you to show up here pretending to be her?”
Amy? Amy Lovell?
The bone marrow donor that Edwin found for me?
When did she become the chairwoman of my company?!
I pushed the doorman aside and barged straight in.
My heart was shattered into pieces when I saw the inside of the house.
Beatrice Welles, my mother-in-law, had always found me pretentious and troublesome. However, there she was on the stage, watching the couple and smiling with joy.
Meanwhile, Edwin, who had always been aloof and indifferent, was holding a woman in his arms. He looked over the moon.
That was Amy. It was really her!
My heart clenched. I stood there, motionless and completely dumbfounded.
Back when I had leukemia, Edwin had searched the entire country and found a bone marrow donor for me.
It was Amy, a poor student who could not even afford to eat back then.
My leukemia was cured, but it left me with septicemia.
Back then, Edwin had originally planned to give Amy a sum of money and send her away.
I could not bear to do it, so I arranged a position for her in the company.
I guided her all the way from a poor student to a corporate executive.
Amy knelt on the floor, crying bitterly. She swore that she could never repay my kindness and was willing to be my devoted servant for the rest of her life.
As it turned out, she was repaying that kindness by getting into Edwin’s bed!
Watching the two of them so deeply in love sent a piercing ache through my heart.
The chatter of the guests around me became overwhelming and unbearable.
“Congratulations, Mr. Welles! This is the first time we’re seeing the mysterious chairwoman behind Skyreach Technologies. She’s every bit as elegant and stunning as they say!”
“Ms. Lovell is a lucky woman too! With a husband like Mr. Welles, she can focus on her research. She’s truly the envy of everyone here.”
Beatrice looked at Amy with satisfaction and said while clapping, “If you ask me, Amy is the only woman in this entire country who deserves our Edwin.”
Amy raised her glass a little shyly and said, “Edwin has been such a big part of my journey. Honestly, I wouldn’t be where I am today without him.
“Everyone, please have a wonderful time today!”
Upon hearing this, Edwin also raised his glass and said, “We built this together. It was never about one of us carrying the other.”
When they saw how perfectly in sync the couple was, the surrounding guests began to cheer for them to kiss.
I, however, felt an involuntary shudder run through my body.
My heart was pounding, and my vision blurred.
Amidst the noise of the bustling crowd, I grabbed a bottle and hurled it directly at the stage.
Without giving them time to react, I strode up to the stage and slapped both Edwin and Amy.
Both of them were stunned by the sudden blows.
The wedding attendees were also rendered speechless by the unexpected turn of events.
Clenching my numb and swollen hand, I glared at Edwin coldly as I said, “So, this is the ‘serious problem’ you mentioned?”
Edwin tried to say something, but the words caught in his throat, and he could not bring himself to speak.
The many executives and guests present were even more confused. They were not sure what was happening.
In the midst of the silence, Beatrice’s shrill voice rang out urgently.
“You again? How many times does my son have to reject you? Have you no shame?
“A lot of important figures from the tech industry are present today. Mess with them, and you’ll regret it.”
One of the chairmen said harshly, “Unbelievable! A stalker has the nerve to crash a wedding and commit assault? Aren’t you afraid of being arrested?”
The crowd instantly erupted into an uproar. Everyone started to denounce me and vow to make me pay.
Frowning, I tried to bypass Beatrice to confront Edwin.
However, Amy put her arm around Edwin and looked at me with tearful eyes before saying, “Sienna, Edwin has rejected you ninety-nine times. Don’t you think that’s enough? Why can’t you just leave us alone?”
As she spoke, tears actually began to stream down her face.
“If Edwin had any feelings for you at all, I’d step aside. I swear I would.”
Edwin’s expression darkened. He gently scolded her, “What nonsense are you talking about?”
Then, he turned to look at me with utter disgust and said, “How many more times do I have to tell you that there can never be anything between us?
“Amy’s the only one I’m ever going to marry. Get it through your head.”
With that, Edwin gestured for the security guards to escort me out.
Seeing them united against me like that made me think my heart would shatter.
In the next second, a childish voice piped up.
“Mommy, Daddy, who is this lady?”
My breath caught in my throat. My head started spinning
My entire body began to feel hot and prickly from anger.
They actually had a child together?
I remembered the day Edwin voluntarily went abroad for work.
When he told me that this trip might take a year, he looked happy.
He also asked me not to visit him, saying he wanted to be more independent.
Although I found it strange, I still agreed to give him an extra four million dollars just so he would not have to scrimp and save.
At this moment, I realized that he had probably used my money to raise his illegitimate child!
I fought hard to suppress my emotions.
After I composed myself, I asked, “Edwin, when did you have a kid, and why didn’t I know about it?”
Amy hugged the child nervously, while Edwin stood in front of me. He looked righteously indignant, as if he were performing his duty.
“Amy and I have been together for a while now. Is it really that surprising that we have a child?
I watched as they put on that ill-fated lovers act. I said deliberately, “Edwin, I literally just gave you nine billion dollars in research bonuses yesterday.
“Now, you’re telling me that you have been building a secret family behind my back. And you’re making me out to be some obsessed ex? Do you have no shame?”
When Amy heard this, she cried even harder.
She turned to the surrounding guests and choked out between sobs, “I was going to surprise everyone, but I didn’t expect Sienna to fly off the handle like that.
“Edwin and I had a child a while ago. I kept it quiet because I didn’t want to rub it in Sienna’s face.
“Edwin felt bad for her, so he let her keep a minor position at the company. But I never thought she’d react this way.”
Amy’s words instantly ignited the crowd’s fury.
“Making someone hide their own kid just to spare her fragile feelings? That’s pathetic!”
The whispers buzzed around me. I clutched my chest and inhaled deeply.
I fixed my gaze on Amy and said coldly, “Amy, do you want me to tell everyone here how you once knelt on the floor while thanking me?”
“You said your family was poor. You went from a broke student to an executive because of me.
“You swore you’d work yourself to the bone to repay me. And this is how you repay me now?”
The moment I said that, I felt a sharp pain shoot through my lower back.
“Nobody took your money! Amy got where she is today through her own talent and hard work!”
Beatrice shouted from behind me with a knife in her hand.
I lay on the floor gasping for air. My hemophilia amplified the pain radiating from my lower back. Dark spots danced in my vision. My body trembled involuntarily as cold sweat broke across my forehead.
The crowd erupted with mockery.
“Yeah, everyone in the industry knows about Mr. Welles and Ms. Lovell.”
“Skyreach Technologies only got this big because of Ms. Lovell’s patents.”
“And this person said she ‘helped’ Mr. Welles? That’s ridiculous.”
As they looked at the child in Beatrice’s arms, the surrounding guests stared at me with even greater disgust.
“Mr. Welles already has a kid with someone else. Does she have no shame?”
“If it weren’t for all those patents under Ms. Lovell’s name, the company never would have made it this far.”
“And she actually expects Ms. Lovell to work to the bone to repay her? Does she think she’s the chairwoman?”
Patents under Amy’s name? That was ridiculous.
Every single patent license under my company belonged to my father and me. Who did she think she was?
She was not even qualified to be a janitor at my father’s research institute! Yet she wanted to take credit for my achievements? In her dreams!
Upon hearing this, I glared at Edwin with bloodshot eyes.
“Go ahead. Tell them yourself. Tell everyone who really built Skyreach Technologies.”
Edwin was caught off guard. The look in his eyes gradually hardened into pure hatred.
I scoffed.
“I’m the one who got my dad to hand over the patent rights for that eight-hundred-billion-dollar deal with Skyreach Technologies.
“When the company lacked new tech initiatives, I practically lived at the research institute to do the actual work.
“You whined that nobody respected you, so I made you acting chairman. And after everything, you—”
“Enough!”
He lunged at me and gripped my throat tightly. His eyes were blazing with fury.
I struggled to breathe. His face contorted into something ugly and terrifying. Then, everything started fading into darkness.
My entire body was wracked with excruciating pain.
Their child’s sharp cries cut through the air, making my ears throb.
I glared at Edwin, not bothering to hide the hatred in my eyes.
The crowd watched Edwin’s enraged outburst. They started to suspect what was really going on.
Noticing the shift in the room, Amy bit her lip and knelt before me.
She shuffled on her knees until she was right next to me, then deliberately shrieked into my ears, “Sienna! Edwin and I have put up with the way you talk to us for so long!
“But this is Edwin’s wedding day. How could you say something like this in front of our child?
“Please, Sienna. I’m begging you!”
Her last sentence was practically a scream.
I felt a wave of nausea rise in my stomach. I then instinctively pushed Amy away.
She flung herself backward dramatically, crashing directly into the champagne tower behind her.
Glass shards and alcohol splattered across the floor.
Edwin helped Amy up with exaggerated care.
Amy then put on a show of being noble and said, “It’s okay! Sienna didn’t push me. I just lost my footing.”
I had not even said anything yet, and she was already putting on an act.
In the next second, Edwin slapped me.
“Sienna! I should’ve let you starve on the streets!”
Before I could even process the sting from that slap, Beatrice dug her fingers viciously into my lower back.
At that moment, I wished I could go numb. My fingers clawed at the floor involuntarily. Blood gushed out instantly.
“Edwin... my hemophilia...”
I barely managed to get the words out.
However, Beatrice stood over me and yanked me up by my hair. She then grabbed a piece of broken glass and stabbed it into my finger.
Edwin, however, pretended not to see it. He was too busy comforting Amy.
Blood kept gushing out of me. Only then did Edwin’s indifferent expression finally show a hint of panic.
The entire company’s survival depended entirely on my father’s research patents. If something happened to me, there was no way he could escape the consequences.
I used all my strength to raise my head and look at Edwin before saying through gritted teeth, “Edwin! If I die here, my father will come for you!
“You won’t just lose your title of acting chairman; you won’t even qualify to mop floors here!
“Either get me to a hospital right now, or you’re fired!”
