My Groom Tried to Steal My Family Empire Through Marriage Chapter 1

The text came at 11:47 PM, three words and four numbers that changed everything.

Suite 1408. Larson Grand.

No name. No explanation. Just a room number at my own family's hotel.

I stared at my phone screen in the dim light of my bedroom. The wedding rehearsal dinner was tomorrow night. The ceremony was in two days. My gown hung in the closet behind me, wrapped in silk. The seating chart sat finalized on my desk. Everything was perfect.

My thumb hovered over the delete button.

I didn't press it.

Instead, I called Marcus Chen, head of security at The Larson Grand. He answered on the second ring, alert despite the hour. "Ms. Larson?"

"I need to review security footage," I said. "Suite 1408. Tonight. I'll be there in twenty minutes."

He knew better than to ask questions. "I'll have it ready."

I dressed in the dark. Black jeans, a sweater, my hair pulled back. I looked at my engagement ring — three carats, emerald cut, the stone Gage spent forty minutes selecting while I watched him pretend the price didn't matter. I left it on.

The drive to Fifth Avenue took twelve minutes. The city was still awake, taxis streaming past, tourists taking photos in front of lit storefronts. I'd grown up in Manhattan. I knew every block, every shortcut, every building my father's company owned or wanted to own. The Larson Grand was our flagship — thirty-two floors of marble and history, the hotel where presidents stayed, where deals worth billions got made over breakfast.

Where my fiancé apparently took his mistress.

Marcus met me in the private elevator that went directly to the security offices on the third floor. He was fifty-six, former NYPD, and had worked for my father for fifteen years. He didn't make small talk.

The monitoring room was small and cold. Screens covered one wall, showing live feeds from every floor. Marcus pulled up the footage on a center monitor and stepped back.

"How far back?" he asked.

"Start at 8 PM."

He nodded and left me alone.

The timestamp read 20:14:33 when Gage appeared in the lobby camera. I recognized his walk before I saw his face — that confident stride, shoulders back, like he owned every room he entered. A woman walked beside him. Dark hair, young, laughing at something he said.

Leyla Herrera.

I knew her. Gage had introduced us at a charity gala six months ago. She was a junior at NYU, a scholarship recipient in the mentorship program Gage ran through his family's foundation. He'd talked about her over dinner once, called her bright, promising, someone who reminded him why he did the work.

I watched them cross the lobby. Gage's hand rested on the small of her back.

The elevator camera picked them up next. They stood close. Too close. Leyla said something and Gage laughed, his head tilted toward hers. The doors opened on the fourteenth floor.

The hallway footage showed them walking to Suite 1408. Gage used a keycard. They went inside.

I fast-forwarded. At 20:52:16, room service arrived. At 21:18:09, the door opened briefly and Leyla's hand reached out to hang the Do Not Disturb sign.

I rewound to the room service delivery and played it at normal speed. The door opened wider this time. Leyla stood there in a white hotel bathrobe, her hair wet. She signed the receipt, laughing at something the server said. Behind her, I could see into the suite. Gage sat on the sofa, tie loosened, shirt unbuttoned.

On the coffee table in front of him sat a jewelry box I recognized.

It was the vintage Cartier bracelet I'd chosen for my something old. The one that had belonged to my grandmother. The one currently locked in the safe in my apartment.

Except it wasn't.

I sat back in the chair. My hands were folded in my lap. I looked calm. I felt nothing.

No — that wasn't true. I felt something. It was cold and clear and settling into my chest like ice water.

I watched the rest of the footage. Forty-three minutes total. They didn't leave the room. At 22:37:51, the lights inside went dark.

I stood up, smoothed my sweater, and walked out. Marcus looked up as I passed.

"Thank you," I said. "I'll need a copy of that footage. Everything from 8 PM to midnight. Send it to my personal email. Encrypted."

"Of course, Ms. Larson."

I drove home. My penthouse was quiet and dark. I poured myself a glass of water and set it on the kitchen counter without drinking it. I sat on the sofa and looked at the clock. 12:11 AM.

Eleven minutes passed.

I picked up my phone and called Armani Burke.

She answered on the third ring, voice alert. "Maeve?"

"I need you here," I said.

"I'm on my way."

She arrived in twenty minutes wearing joggers and a Columbia Law sweatshirt, her laptop bag over one shoulder. I let her in and walked back to the living room. She followed, set her bag down, and waited.

I told her everything. The anonymous text. The footage. Suite 1408. Leyla Herrera in my grandmother's bracelet. I spoke clearly, without stopping, like I was presenting a case summary.

When I finished, Armani was quiet for exactly three seconds.

"Do you want to cancel the wedding?" she asked.

"No."

She nodded slowly. "Then we proceed as planned. We just change the ending."

She opened her laptop.

I sat beside her, and we began to work.
