Chapter 1

As someone kidnapped me, I called my husband, Kurt Mills, for help.

However, my mother, Anna, said that I was making trouble. She told Kurt not to interfere but to take the opportunity to teach me a lesson.

After the terrible ordeal, I finally learned not to cry or make a fuss.

I thought both of them would be very satisfied.

Unexpectedly, Kurt's hair turned white overnight and Anna was blind when they knew the truth.

——

After the incident, Rosie, a female police officer, sent me back.

When I entered the house, warm lights were on in the living room on the first floor.

Kurt was cutting the cake, and my mother was singing the birthday song to him.

The moment they turned around and saw me, their faces darkened.

Anna scolded me angrily, "Where have you been fooling around these days? Why do you come back?"

Without uttering a word, I watched her face, which was a little blurry. Then, I bent down with difficulty to take my shoes from the shoe rack and put them on.

Kurt stopped my mother.

"It's okay as long as Lara is back. Anna, please don't say anything about her."

"Don't defend her. You treated her so well, but how did she treat you? She keeps making trouble every day. Today is your birthday. Look at her. Does she have a gift for you?

"Did she consider you? Did she remember that today was your birthday?"

Anna then shouted at me, "Lara, how do you act as a wife?"

I looked at my chattering mother and said calmly, "Don't worry! I won't do it again."

After saying that, I looked at Kurt. "Happy birthday."

Kurt reached out to pull me, but I suddenly felt nauseous and covered my mouth, almost vomiting.

I pushed his hand away and said calmly, "Let's get a divorce, and I'll leave the house with nothing. Go get the divorce certificate tomorrow morning."

Having finished speaking, I walked towards the bedroom on the second floor with difficulty.

I didn't know what Kurt's expression was. All I could hear was the sound of my mother cursing.

"Lara, don't go that far! In this world, apart from your father and Kurt, nobody will be willing to pamper you like this.

"It's not enough to lose your father. Do you want to make me angry to death too?

"Lara, I'm talking to you!

"Are you deaf?"

I ignored her roar and walked up the stairs step by step. Every step I took was so painful that it felt like it would take my life.

After going into the house and locking the door, I had no strength left and slid down against the door, then fell to the ground with my body tilted.

My head was covered in sweat, and my body was shaking uncontrollably. I could only hug myself with all my strength.

I heard my mother knocking on the door. Just the sound of her voice showed how angry she was. She must be mad because I ignored her like this.

Over the years, no matter what I did, she was never satisfied with me.

The only one who could satisfy her was my father's favorite student, Kurt.

In the past, I believed that no matter how outstanding others were, I was still her daughter. The reason why she liked Kurt should be because of me.

But now, I wouldn't be so naive anymore.

In fact, Kurt seemed to be her biological son, and I was her daughter-in-law.

"Anna, calm down. Let me talk to Lara alone."

Kurt tried to persuade Lara at the door, and she stopped knocking on the door, saying unhappily, "Don't indulge her! The more you indulge her, the more reckless she will be."

Kurt then knocked on the door.

"Lara, it's me. Open the door."

I collapsed on the ground, without the strength to speak.

"Did Kurt spoil me? Maybe he did before Saya Smith returned to the country." I thought to myself.

One month after we got married, Saya, his junior female schoolmate, came back.

One day when I went to see him, I bumped into Saya accidentally, and then some coffee spilled on her sleeve.

Kurt was so nervous that he pulled her behind him and scolded me with a cold face.

"Lara, what are you doing?"

I didn't do anything; I just bumped into someone accidentally.

It was Kurt who felt guilty.

He thought that I had already known about their affair.

In his view, I was trying to catch their adultery in the act.

At that moment, he scolded me, banning me from going to his workplace to look for him.

My intuition was very accurate. Once having a suspicion, I began to check it out thoroughly.

It turned out that Kurt and Saya were truly in love.

I was the one who kept them from falling in love.

Kurt and I had a big fight later. I asked him why he married me if he didn't like me.

He said that it was because my father was his teacher and helped him a lot.

Chapter 2

His words hurt me deeply.

In the days that followed, I argued with him, made a fuss, and even mentioned divorce, but Kurt always acted as a good-tempered nice guy, who let me do whatever I wanted.

In my view, it was because he didn't care about me. Whether I would be dead or alive and how I felt, none of it mattered.

As for Anna, she just thought that I was unreasonable and reckless.

I had my pride.

Thus, I would never tell anyone that my beloved one married me because of my father.

The moment I was rescued from the kidnappers, I was lying on the ground, unable to move. Under the gaze of many people, I buried my head very low, wishing I could bury it in the soil.

I wondered if they would also think that it was all the result of my fault.

I wanted to explain to them. I didn't do anything wrong, and it wasn't my fault.

Rosie, the gentle female police officer, took off her clothes to cover me and then picked me up.

She said firmly to me, "Ms. Ball, believe me. Everything will be fine."

I knew that it wouldn't get better.

I was destroyed so much that I couldn't recover.

At that time, I was wondering why I didn't die immediately.

I had no idea why I was still alive after suffering pain.

I doubted whether I could live well for the rest of my life.

The doctor who examined me said that I would vomit and feel nauseous. Besides, my stomach would no longer be able to absorb the nutrients my body needed.

I would have to rely on nutrient solutions later.

The officer arranged for a psychologist to counsel me, then looked serious after the counseling.

She saved her phone number and contact information on my phone, reminding me, "Ms. Ball, if you need me, I can accompany you 24 hours a day."

I shook my head.

I asked the police officers not to make the kidnapping public and asked them not to post my photo.

But as the case was serious, they were in a dilemma.

I told them that I would try to stay alive.

Maybe it was what I said that touched them.

They finally agreed to my request and took me home.

Back to reality, Kurt continued to knock on the door. I took the phone tremblingly and sent him a message on WhatsApp.

[I don't want to see you now. Let's get a divorce tomorrow morning.]

Kurt: [Why?]

I replied: [No reason. I just don't want to waste time with you anymore, and it's boring. I'll move out after the divorce.]

Kurt: [Lara, this is your home.]

As I looked at these words, tears couldn't stop rolling down from the corners of my eyes and soaking into my hair.

[It used to be, but it's no longer my home after we get married.]

Kurt didn't reply to my message. He stood at the door and said, "Open the door, and let's talk face to face."

I didn't say anything or message him again.

Thus, Kurt could only go downstairs. Later, I vaguely heard his conversation with my mother.

"How about it?"

"Lara didn't open the door. It's okay, Anna. She will be fine tomorrow."

"You're not even allowed into the bedroom? Don't you have the key?"

As the sound faded away, I suddenly felt lucky that all the spare keys in the house were in my bedroom.

After lying on the carpet for a long time, I tried to stand up. However, I couldn't do it as if I had forgotten how to exert strength.

I crawled to the bathroom, lay in the bathtub, and fell asleep under the blanket.

I felt damp and cold in the middle of the night, so I struggled to get up, changed my clothes, and took a shower.

With my stomach cramping, I had a stomachache, and soon a bad smell appeared.

Getting up, I changed clothes and cleaned up again.

Later, I couldn't fall asleep anymore, looking at the darkness outside the house.

I wanted to live, but unluckily, in my current condition, I was unable to live long.

But no matter how difficult it was, I would get a divorce.

I didn't want to die as someone's wife.

After I got divorced, I would move out. Even if I couldn't survive, I wanted to die outside the house.

As my mother wished, I would die outside and never go back.

Chapter 3

I turned on the light and put on some light makeup.

Then, I found an outfit I liked and put it on.

Such a simple thing might only take ten or twenty minutes in the past, but it took me almost two hours today.

It was daybreak, and I looked at the pendulum clock on the wall, which slowly ticked toward eight o'clock.

I found out all the materials we would need, took them, struggled to stand up, and walked down.

As I went downstairs, Kurt was not there.

There was only my mom, and the maid had just made breakfast.

"Hey, it's rare to see you getting up so early."

I looked at her, whose face was still blurry. My eyesight, which had been damaged, could no longer recover.

"We agreed to get a divorce today."

"What? Divorce, Lara, are you crazy?"

Anna was hysterical and furious. In the past, we would have started a big quarrel, but I didn't have the energy to do it today. Also, I could never argue with her later.

"I made this decision after careful consideration."

Just then, Kurt came down from upstairs, heard what I said, and said softly, "Lara, I will not divorce you.

"You can be angry and scold me as you want, as long as we don't get divorced."

I turned to look at him and said calmly, "Believe it or not, I'm not angry. I just don't want to have Mills' wife written on my tombstone after I die. It would make me feel sick, and I would die with regrets.

"You're a stain in my life."

Kurt came closer, and the somewhat blurry face was finally no longer calm. He looked at me and gritted his teeth.

We confronted each other in silence.

Anna was about to hit me but stopped by him.

"Lara, do you think of me like this?"

I forced a smile, saying nonchalantly, "What else? Don't you think everyone in this world would be proud to have you in their lives?"

His face darkened, and I could feel that he was furious.

He bowed to my mother and apologized, "Anna, I'm sorry.

"I agree to Lara's request this time. Don't worry. Even if we get divorced, I will treat you as my mother, my biological mother."

He drove, and we went to get the divorce certificate.

At the entrance of the door, Kurt spoke to me, "Lara, it's your last chance. You can't regret it later."

"No regrets."

Having finished speaking, I walked into the courthouse.

We got the divorce certificate smoothly.

After that, we went home together. I asked the maid to help me pack some luggage and take it downstairs.

Anna was busy comforting Kurt.

I stopped and said to her at the door.

"Mom, if the call for help I made to Kurt half a month ago was true, would you still stop him from saving me?"
