Rejected Mate's Revenge Chapter 1

The morning light filtered through the stained glass windows of the pack house, casting rainbow patterns across the marble floor where I stood. Today was supposed to be the happiest day of my life—my mating ceremony with Pierce Stone, Alpha of the Moonstone Pack. After five years of grueling dedication, I had finally completed all twenty-seven of his mate requirements.

My fingers trembled as they found my mother's pendant, the small silver wolf that had been her last gift to me. "Give me strength, Mom," I whispered, touching the worn metal that had been my constant companion through every trial, every sleepless night of training, every moment I'd pushed my body beyond its limits to prove myself worthy of Pierce's love.

I could hardly believe I'd made it here. From an eager eighteen-year-old she-wolf desperate to please her Alpha, to the pack's youngest female warrior at twenty-three. Every scar on my hands told a story—knife combat training until my palms bled, tracking exercises through frozen forests, diplomatic missions to hostile neighboring packs. All of it for him. All of it to prove that I deserved to stand beside him as his Luna.

The white ceremonial dress hung behind me, its intricate beadwork catching the morning light. Soon, Pierce would mark me as his mate, and the bond I'd felt pulling at my heart for five years would finally be complete. The Moon Goddess had chosen us for each other—I'd known it from the moment our eyes first met during my warrior trials.

But where was he? The ceremony was set to begin in two hours, and I hadn't seen Pierce since yesterday evening. My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin, eager to find our mate.

I made my way through the corridors of the pack house, my bare feet silent on the polished wood floors. Pierce's office door stood slightly ajar, and I could hear his voice from within. Relief flooded through me—he was probably handling last-minute Alpha duties before our ceremony.

I approached the door, ready to knock, when his words stopped me cold.

"Diana, you know I love you. Today doesn't change anything between us."

My hand froze inches from the door. Diana Shaw. His chosen mate from childhood, the woman he'd told me was just a friend, a pack sister.

"But Pierce, you're mating with her today," came Diana's voice, sweet and concerned. "What if—"

"What if nothing." Pierce's tone was firm, authoritative. "Those twenty-seven requirements? They were never about her proving herself worthy. They were about buying time, giving me excuses to delay this inevitable ceremony. The Moon Goddess may have chosen Lara as my fated mate, but I choose you, Diana. I've always chosen you."

The world tilted on its axis. My legs nearly gave out, and I pressed my back against the wall, struggling to breathe. Five years. Five years of believing, of sacrificing, of pushing myself to the breaking point.

"You're sure she doesn't suspect?" Diana's voice carried a note of satisfaction that made my stomach turn.

"Lara's too devoted to question anything I ask of her. She'll go through with the ceremony because she thinks it's her destiny. But you and I both know where my heart truly lies."

I couldn't move. Couldn't think. The pendant at my throat felt like it was choking me. Every memory of the past five years crashed through my mind—the impossible tasks, the constant moving goalposts, the way Pierce always seemed to find new requirements just when I'd completed the previous ones.

The diplomatic mission to the hostile Crimson Pack that nearly got me killed. The winter survival test that left me with frostbite. The combat trials where I'd fought male warriors twice my size, earning scars that would never fully fade. All of it... all of it had been a lie.

"After today, I'll have fulfilled my duty to the pack by accepting my fated mate," Pierce continued, his voice cold and calculating. "But she'll never be my Luna in anything but name. You will always be the one I turn to, the one I trust, the one I love."

My wolf howled in anguish within me, the sound so loud in my mind I was surprised they couldn't hear it through the door. The mate bond that had felt like destiny now felt like chains, binding me to someone who saw me as nothing more than an obligation.

I pushed myself away from the wall on unsteady legs. I had to confront him. I had to hear him say it to my face.

The office door seemed to weigh a thousand pounds as I pushed it open. Pierce and Diana sprang apart, but not quickly enough to hide the intimate way they'd been standing together, her hand on his chest, his fingers tangled in her golden hair.

"Lara." Pierce's voice was carefully neutral, but I caught the flash of something—guilt? annoyance?—in his dark eyes. "You shouldn't be here. The ceremony—"

"Tell me it isn't true." My voice came out as barely a whisper, but in the sudden silence of the room, it might as well have been a shout. "Tell me I didn't just hear you say that everything—all of it—was a lie."
