Chapter 1

My mom had been abused by my father for a long time and she suffered from delusional disorder.

My childhood sweetheart, Mathew Smith, was a police officer and he chose to stay here in order to protect us.

Before we got married, Mathew swore to take good care of my mom forever.

But after we got married, Mathew deliberately sent away my colleague's family to buy the pepper spray, causing my mom to die miserably.

"Your family is my family. How can I not care about them?"

I called Mathew the whole night. As soon as he answered the phone, I would hear endless curses and slanders from Mathew.

"Emma Lee, can you and your crazy mom stop being so unreasonable."

I watched everything numbly and prepared the divorce agreement.

But Mathew was angry.

***

The moment I returned from my business trip and pushed the door open, I found my mom was lying quietly in a pool of blood.

Although I already had the answer, when I reached out my trembling hand to feel her breath, my tears still couldn't stop falling.

My kind neighbor called the police for me.

The police officers arrived very quickly. I looked through the crowd of officers over and over again.

But I still didn't see Mathew.

Mr. Wood, who led the team, told me that according to the traces left at the scene, my mom had committed suicide.

But I didn't believe it. Before I went on a business trip, my mom said happily that she would wait for me to go home for dinner.

"The surveillance camera in the community shows that only Brock Cooper has appeared, but if there is no evidence that could confirm that he was the killer, we can't arrest him. I am afraid that this case can only end with suicide."

The moment I heard the name of Brock, I couldn't help but tremble.

I would never forget the pain that he had inflicted on me and my mom with his male chauvinism and domestic violence.

That kind of fear was deeply engraved in my mind.

My gaze was filled with hatred. I was sure Brock had something to do with my mom's death.

Looking at the pained expression on my face, Mr. Wood asked, "By the way, where's Mathew? Didn't he go with you? He's on vacation these days."

I looked up in shock and said. "Didn't he say he was on duty?"

Realizing that he had said something wrong, Mr. Wood paused and corrected himself. "Oh, yes, I remember now. Two days ago, a friend of mine asked for leave at the last minute, so Mathew continued stay in the office."

Mr. Wood and I had known each other for many years. I was about to nod, but I heard the young officer whispering next to me.

"Hasn't Mathew been on holiday for the past few days?"

"Shh, don't talk nonsense. Mathew was dating somebody recently. He's going shopping with Emily."

Noticing my gaze, they turned their heads away guiltily. Their gazes were very complicated. Some were pitiful, while others thought that they were loyal to their brothers.

In fact, I had always known that Mathew had cheated on me. However, due to my mom's illness and our long-term relationship, I had always turned a blind eye to it.

My heart trembled. I wanted to ask where Mathew had been in the past three days?

As soon as the phone was answered, I heard Mathew's impatient voice.

"What are you doing now, Mathew? Isn't it time to get off work? Why aren't you home yet?"

"I'm accompanying Emily to buy pepper spray. She and her mom encountered a pervert a few days ago. You can't let me take care of your mom all day long."

"Can you not be so selfish? Can't colleagues help each other?"

Listening to Mathew's cold tone, I suddenly felt how ridiculous and pathetic I was.

I didn't mention my mom, but Mathew wanted to slander us.

I suddenly felt relieved.

He was still Mathew, who was righteous. As a policeman, he would enthusiastically help anyone who needed help.

What had changed was his attitude towards me and my mom.

"Really? Then you're really a busy man."

I hung up the phone sarcastically and followed the police back to the police station.

No matter what, I must not let my mom die without understanding.

Chapter 2

Sitting on a cold chair in the police station, I flipped through all the evidence with bloodshot eyes, hoping to find some clues from it.

When I flipped to the last page, the missed call history made me shiver as if I had fallen into an ice cave.

At first, I was worried about my mom and didn't want to go on a business trip, but Mathew repeatedly encouraged me to pursue a better myself on a business trip.

He promised that he would take good care of my mom, so I went out nervously.

Now that I thought about it, Mathew had deliberately sent me away to save time to accompany Emily and her family.

My heart, which was riddled with holes, shattered at this moment.

I covered my face and cried bitterly, but my thoughts couldn't help outlining the details of the past.

In the past, when my mom was ill, Mathew would prepare to answer the phone all day long.

If my mom kept nagging, Mathew would patiently talk with her.

But now, he didn't even know that something had happened to my mom for three days.

If I didn't go out, my mom wouldn't have to die.

I hated myself for trusting Mathew and leaving my mom behind on a business trip.

I found it extremely ironic.

In order to accompany his little lover's family, Mathew indirectly caused the death of my mom.

Since Mathew had put all his attention on his colleagues, it was useless for me to keep this marriage.

I was going to divorce Mathew, and I would definitely find the murderer.

After I hung up the phone, Mathew, who cared about his reputation, didn't go home for several days.

He even contemptuously thought that I couldn't live without him.

He thought that I would apologize to him humbly, comfort him as before.

But what awaited him was a signed divorce agreement.

Mathew sent me a long series of messages angrily, but I turned a blind eye to them at first.

Seeing that I hadn't replied to his messages, Mathew became anxious and began to bombard me day and night, questioning me about why I should divorce him.

"Emma, if you apologize to me now, I can forgive your unreasonable behavior."

I replied, "If you apologize to me now, sign the divorce agreement as soon as possible."

Mathew refused. "Emma, does your mom know what you're doing?"

"Ask your mom if she allows you to divorce. I'm telling you, if you leave, you won't be able to find a better one than me. Who would want to keep your mom every day."

I blocked him.

At the same time, I hired a private detective to assist me in the investigation of my mom's death.

We often traveled side by side around the community. The neighbors who knew that my mom passed away said that I was sensible and filial, so they comforted me.

However, if he didn't do it on purpose, someone would make use of it to make a fuss.

Seeing that Mathew refused to divorce me, Emily began to be in a panic.

Emily covered her mouth and pretended to be surprised, which aroused Mathew's curiosity.

The more curious Mathew was, the more Emily pretended to be reluctant.

In the end, under Mathew's coaxing and pestering, Emily showed him the photo.

From this angle, I was kissing a man at the gate of the community.

Biting the corner of her lips, Emily tugged at the corner of Mathew's clothes weakly.

"Mathew, don't be angry. What if my sister-in-law has something to ask for the man? It could not be that she cheated on you."

Mathew slammed the table and stood up, venting his anger with a ferocious expression.

"Ask for help? So she sleep with that man?"

Mathew's bloodshot eyes looked like those of a wild beast. "Emma, no wonder you're in such a hurry to divorce me. So that's the reason."

The divorce agreement was torn apart by Mathew.

Emily's gaze looked more and more vicious.

Mathew called me like a crazy man.

"Emma, I just accompanied Emily and her mom to go shopping. Is it necessary to make things so embarrassing?"

"Emily and her mom met a madman who was shouting with a knife to hack Kally to death. Do you know how dangerous it is? I was just willing to help others delay a little, and you wanted to divorce me. You did it on purpose, didn't you?"

"I was wondering why you insisted on divorcing me. It turns out that you've found a another man for your crazy mom in advance."

But I did not have enough time to be angry with Mathew's baseless slander, I caught a crucial piece of information in his words.

A mad man with a knife in hand shouted that he wanted to hack Kally to death. Why did these words sound exactly the same as the catchphrase when Brock was violent.

When I were young, Brock had always abused us, and mom had always held me tightly in her arms. She had endured the pain and comforted me. "Kally, don't be afraid. Mom is here."

When I grew up, I had been working hard to study. After graduating from a famous university, I escaped from this ruthless home with my mom.

Mom changed my name to Emma Lee. My name was no longer Kally Cooper.

However, things did not go as I wished.

I clenched my fists.I must make them pay the price.

I immediately contacted the police to check the surveillance footage of the mall that day.

But Emily and her mom were not the only ones in the surveillance footage.

They held my mom's hands with a string and led my mom behind them as if they were walking a dog, and they looked impatient.

"Why did you bring a madman out for no reason?"

"Mom, Mathew took her out for a walk out of kindness. Just treat her like a dog."

Mr. Wood felt a little regretful, and he said. "Emma, I know your mom's death was a great blow to you, but this surveillance video has nothing to do with your mom's death. You are wasting police resources by doing this."

But the next second, the surveillance video made everyone widen their eyes in disbelief.

Brock suddenly rushed into the mall with a dagger in his hand.

In a panic, seeing that the knife was about to fall on Emily, she pushed my mom out to block the knife.

Brock immediately recognized her as his ex-wife and immediately calmed down.

Brock ignored that my mom was trembling and stroked her face with a smile.

With a heart-wrenching scream, my mom was dragged out by Brock.

It was ridiculous that no one called the police at the scene.

When Mathew returned to the scene with new bags for Emily and her mom, Mathew found that my mom was missing. He just smiled faintly.

"Emily, let me accompany you and auntie to continue to walk around. As for the lunatic, he can't have gone far."

I was so angry and I couldn't stand still.

Mr. Wood's expression was ugly. He didn't expect that the person he thought so highly of would be such a person.

I roared and slammed my hands on the ground again and again. I was so heartbroken that my body stiffened.

"I want to sue! I want to sue!"

Emily received the court summon and burst into tears in Mathew's arms.

Mathew was so angry that he was about to argue with me, but he met a new colleague halfway.

His colleague patted Mathew on the shoulder with a serious expression.

"Mathew, I've heard about what happened to your family. My condolences."

Mathew's expression, which was full of anger just now, was now full of doubts.
