After My Fiancé Gave His Intern My Ring Chapter 1

I bought the laptop off a resale site for two hundred dollars. It was for freelance design work, something small to keep my hands busy while I planned centerpieces and seating charts. The listing said "wiped clean, ready to use." That was a lie.

I found the folder by accident. It was buried three levels deep, named something boring like "Q3 Reports." I only opened it because I was looking for a font I liked. Instead I found photos. Charlie Porter, Chase's intern, in his hotel room. Chase's hand on her waist. Messages under the photos, months of them, going back further than I wanted to count. *I can't stop thinking about you.* *She doesn't get me like you do.* *Soon, baby. I promise.*

I didn't cry. I want to be clear about that, because I expected myself to. I sat on my kitchen floor with my back against the cabinet and I felt something in my chest go very quiet, very still. Fifteen years. I did the math without meaning to. Fifteen years, and this was what was underneath it.

I closed the laptop. Then I opened it again and started copying files onto a drive.

The next few days, I was perfect. I went to dinner with Chase and three of his investors at a steakhouse on 52nd Street, and I laughed at the right moments and asked about their kids by name. Chase squeezed my hand under the table like he always did when he wanted me to charm someone, and I let him, because I needed him to believe nothing had changed. At night, after he fell asleep, I sat in the bathroom with my phone and moved another folder onto my drive. I didn't tremble. I didn't slip. I had spent fifteen years learning how to smile through anything. Now I had a reason to use it.

Then he gave me the ring.

He took me to the rooftop of his parents' hotel, the same one where he'd proposed the first time, and got down on one knee again like we were renewing something instead of pretending. "I had it made from one of your old sketches," he said, opening the box. "The one with the vine pattern. I found it in a box in your old apartment years ago. I never forgot it."

It was beautiful. It was also the first time in a decade he'd mentioned my art at all.

"It's perfect," I said, and slid it on, and smiled the smile I'd perfected for exactly this kind of moment. He looked so pleased with himself. He thought the ring proved he knew me. It only proved he knew how to use me.

Three nights later, I followed him.

I told myself I was being paranoid. I told myself a lot of things as I sat in my car across the street from a restaurant in the West Village, watching through the window as he took a small box from his coat pocket. Charlie Porter sat across from him, laughing at something, her hair down, a glass of wine untouched in front of her. He opened the box. I couldn't hear anything from where I sat, but I didn't need to. I recognized the ring. Not the same one — a twin of it. Same vine pattern. Same setting.

They walked outside a few minutes later. He kissed her on the sidewalk, right under a streetlamp, like he wasn't afraid of anyone seeing.

I didn't feel my heart break. I think it had already finished breaking, quietly, days before. What I felt instead was something colder, something with edges. I would not cry in his apartment. I would not beg him to explain. I would take everything he'd built his pride on and I would burn it down in front of every person who mattered to him.

I called Serena that night.

She showed up in twenty minutes with a bottle of Malbec and no makeup, which told me she'd left the office in a hurry. Serena had been my best friend since we were nineteen, back when I still thought I was going to Paris. She was a litigator now, sharp enough to make grown men sweat in depositions, and the only person I trusted with the truth.

I told her everything — the laptop, the messages, the ring, the sidewalk. She didn't say a word until I finished. Then she poured two glasses and said, "Okay. First thing — we need timestamps on everything. Metadata, not just screenshots. Second — where's the gala?"

"Two weeks," I said.

She smiled, and it wasn't a kind smile. "Good. That's enough time to make sure he never sees it coming."
