Your Wife, A Stranger Now Chapter 1

"Mrs. Grayson, are you sure you want to end this twenty-year marriage and give up custody of the children?"

"Yes. File it. I've had enough," I said calmly into my wireless headset, scrubbing hard at a stubborn coffee stain on the marble island.

For twenty years, I had poured everything I had into this family.

I gave up my career as an architect to manage the mansion I had designed, fretted over our children's education, and silently supported my husband as he built his empire at Grayson Global.

But my husband, Alistair, appeared with his young adopted sister, Cassidy, on a famous business podcast and said, "My success today is all thanks to Cassidy's creative spark."

Even my own children looked down on me, mocking me as a boring housewife who only knew how to bake cookies. They had formed an alliance with their omnipresent "Aunt Cassidy," a woman who seemed to think she was the true mistress of this house.

I signed the divorce papers and walked away, letting them become the "perfect family" they so clearly wanted to be.

But in my absence, the house descended into chaos…

"Mrs. Grayson, just a final confirmation. Once you sign, this irrevocable agreement will be submitted to the court. Given that you've waived some of your asset claims, we won't have to endure a lengthy litigation period. Are you certain you want to give up everything, including the custody arrangements?"

I held the phone between my shoulder and ear, viciously scrubbing a stubborn coffee stain on the marble island with a sponge.

My voice was flat. "Yes, Rebecca. File it. I've had enough."

The lawyer on the other end was silent for a moment, her tone softening. "Alright, Juliana. Once we have Alistair's signature, under New York state law, it's a done deal."

I hung up and stared at the suds-covered sponge in my hand. How absurd. Ending a twenty-year marriage while scrubbing a countertop.

Meanwhile, from the enormous Bang & Olufsen smart speaker in the living room, a well-known business podcast—something in the vein of 'How I Built This'—was playing an interview with the "Thinker of the Year."

On the podcast's cover art, Alistair, dressed in a Tom Ford suit, looked impeccable, radiating power and charisma. Seated beside him was his adopted sister and personal assistant, Cassidy. Her makeup was flawless, and she gazed at him with pure, undisguised adoration.

The host asked in his smooth, broadcaster's voice, "Mr. Grayson, to whom do you attribute your incredible success?"

Alistair didn't hesitate. He turned to Cassidy, his normally sharp gaze softening. "Cassidy—my personal assistant, and my sister. I wouldn't be where I am today without her creative spark and emotional support over the past decade."

He thanked his partners. He thanked his investors on Wall Street.

But the wife who had designed all his flagship stores, raised his children, and silently supported him for twenty years? To him, I was a ghost. Invisible. Insignificant.

Just then, the front door burst open. My twin children were home from school.

My son, Miles, clutched his nose dramatically as he stomped in. "Mom, are you using that lemon-scented cleaner again? The whole house smells like a public restroom. It's disgusting!"

My daughter, Paige, didn't even bother to take off her Golden Goose sneakers. She rushed to the speaker, pointing at the podcast cover on her phone and squealing. "Oh my god! Look! Dad and Aunt Cassidy are on the cover! Cassidy looks so hot. Way better than Mom in that ratty Lululemon outfit."

"Totally," Miles chimed in, his gaze dripping with disdain. "Aunt Cassidy is a total queen. Mom just putters around this kitchen island like some sheltered nanny who's never seen the world."

I walked out of the kitchen with a platter of freshly baked organic roast chicken. Listening to my husband's bullshit on the podcast while my own children blatantly humiliated me, my heart felt like it had turned to ash.

Alistair's parents had died young, so he'd always kept his adopted sister, Cassidy, by his side.

He would always say, "Cassidy's had a rough life. As her brother, I have to take care of her."

But I knew the truth. They'd had a passionate affair in high school. Now, Cassidy was his inseparable personal assistant.

Whenever I voiced my unease about their lack of boundaries, Alistair would resort to his classic gaslighting routine. "Juliana, why is your mind so filthy? She's my sister! You housewives need to stop being so paranoid. It's pathetic."

In this house, it felt like Alistair and the children had formed their own little club, one where I wasn't welcome. Their loyalty, in every action, belonged to Cassidy.

I silently placed the roasting pan on the dining table and glanced at the "perfect couple" on the screen. A bitter, self-mocking smile touched my lips.

If the four of you are the real family, then I'll gladly step aside.

I turned and went upstairs to the master bedroom, pulling the documents my lawyer had drafted days ago from a drawer.

With a steady hand, I signed Juliana Pierce—my maiden name—on the "Petitioner" line.

Twenty years as an unpaid housekeeper and chauffeur. I was done.

I carefully folded the document, tucked it into a thick stack of amendments for the family trust, and placed it squarely in the center of the study's coffee table.

It was past midnight when Alistair came home, bringing a chill with him.

He didn't bother changing his shoes, stumbling toward the leather sofa as he loosened his silk tie.

I walked over, smelling the expensive whiskey on his breath, mingled with Cassidy's signature Le Labo Santal 33. A conspicuous smear of red lipstick stained his collar.

"Why did you drink so much?" I asked, though I already knew the answer.

Alistair waved a dismissive hand, his eyes avoiding mine. "Podcast celebration for Cassidy. The investors were just too enthusiastic. She can't hold her liquor, so I was looking after her."

With that, he carelessly kicked a cardboard box on the floor toward me.

"By the way, got this for you."

I looked down. The latest smart yoga mat.

Alistair unbuttoned his shirt, adding casually, "Picked it up when I was helping Cassidy move into her new gallery in SoHo. Figured since you're home all day with nothing to do, this would be perfect for killing time."

Perfect for me?

So, in his eyes, I was worthy of doing yoga at home, while Cassidy was worthy of a luxury gallery he personally helped set up.

I wasn't angry. A short, cold laugh escaped me as I handed him the file from the coffee table.

"Here. This is for you."

Alistair frowned. "What's this? Paperwork? At this hour?"

"Amendments to the family trust," I lied, my voice steady. "The lawyer said it has to be signed today to adjust the children's beneficiary shares."

His impatience softened at the mention of the children.

But he was too drunk to focus. He didn't read a single word, flipping straight to the last page.

"Fine, fine. I'll sign."

He scrawled his name, tossed the pen aside, and immediately stood to head for the kitchen.

"Cassidy just texted. Her stomach is upset from the drinks. I need to warm up some milk and take it to her. Her new apartment kitchen isn't set up yet."

I watched his back as he bustled around a kitchen he barely knew, a man who wouldn't normally lift a finger to pick up a fallen bottle of olive oil, now rolling up his sleeves for another woman.

I glanced down at the "trust document" in my hands, now a fully executed divorce agreement. I flicked the edge of the paper.

Alistair, I hope you're this "thoughtful" in two weeks when the court summons arrives.
