The few girls around Celine were lavishing praise on her, calling her swift, precise, and ruthless.
“Celine, the two hundred thousand you spent was worth every penny! Look at him, even after you’ve beaten him this badly, there’s still a glimmer of light in his eyes! By the way, his voice sounds a bit like Kristian’s, and even that red mole on the back of his hand is in the same spot as Kristian’s. Could it be that he’s here for you?”
Celine stared hard at the red mole on my hand, momentarily lost in thought.
For a brief moment, I felt a surge of hope, thinking she might have recognized me.
But in the next instant, her face twisted in disgust, and without hesitation, she crushed every joint in my fingers.
“Someone like him, a gambling addict with no humanity, could never compare to my Kristian. Let’s see if you can still gamble after I ruin your hands!”
The pain was so intense it almost sent me into unconsciousness, and not a single word escaped my throat.
I should have never bet on human nature.
From accompanying Celine through her fall from grace as a wealthy heiress to her rise as a new business tycoon, I thought tomorrow’s wedding would be our fresh start.
But little did I know, everything had only ever existed in my fantasies.
Liam, eager to capture every moment of my suffering, ran up in front of me with his phone, recording.
“Celine, look at how he scratches the floor with his nails, he looks just like the ragdoll cat that Kristian keeps.”
“It’s a shame, I accidentally killed it today. Do you think Kristian will be mad at me?”
“If it’s dead, then it’s dead. Kristian and I are already trying to conceive, and cat hair isn’t good for pregnant women,” Celine replied indifferently.
I shuddered at the thought.
Cleo, the cat Celine and I raised together, had been something we both cherished. Before I left for work today, she had said she’d wait for me to come home with Cleo.
But now Cleo was dead, and I would never go home again.
Celine didn’t want me to look at her, so she quickly pressed the electric shock button.
The current surged, and I convulsed, curling up in pain.
The cramping in my abdomen reminded me of the health check-up report I received yesterday.
The doctor had said that after I donated a kidney to Celine, the wound hadn’t healed properly, and I should get a follow-up checkup.
I didn’t want Celine to worry, so I had planned to wait until after the wedding tomorrow to secretly get it checked.
For a fleeting moment, my chaotic mind wondered: if I had told her that my health wasn’t well yesterday, would I be suffering this torment today?
Celine had once promised that even if I turned to ash, she would still recognize me.
But now, standing in front of her, she didn’t even acknowledge me.
Worse yet, at the host’s suggestion, she picked another special service.
“I'll add half million, I want to see water torture.” Celine’s voice was cold as ice, sending chills down my spine.
The host, thrilled by how much I was fetching in bids, praised Celine and Liam as a perfect couple.
Though my vision blurred from the blood, I could still make out Liam smugly pulling Celine into his arms.
His hand, adorned with a matching couple’s ring, moved freely on her waist. “Celine, you’re so considerate, knowing I can’t stand the sight of blood...”
Two water pipes were suddenly shoved into my nostrils, and ice-cold water mixed with chili powder flooded into me.
I writhed like a dehydrated fish, the pain in my abdomen intensifying as the high-pressure gun reopened my not-yet-healed wounds. Warm liquid surged out, pooling in a small patch of blood beneath me on the iron chair.
“What’s wrong with him? It looks like he’s bleeding heavily!”
Someone shouted in panic.
Liam, seeing the blood, wore an expression of limitless satisfaction.
But the next second, after a couple of unsteady steps, he collapsed onto the floor beside me.
In the midst of the commotion, he suddenly reached out and grabbed my ankle. “Kristian, good luck! Hope you live to see the sun tomorrow.”
Anger surged through me as I kicked out with all my strength, forcing his hand off my ankle.
He let out a painful cry, his eyes closed as he passed out.
Celine rushed over and held him tightly, then turned to me, roaring:
“Bastard! How dare you kick my Liam? You want to die?!”
“I’ll add another five million! Anyone here can come up and play with him, just don’t kill him!”
My vision began to darken. In a panic, the host quickly ordered, “Untie him! If he dies, how are we going to keep playing with Ms. Alba's money?”
As the ropes loosened, I mustered all the strength I had left and lunged at Celine.
My deformed fingers dragged across the blood-soaked ground, barely managing to scratch out the first stroke of “Kris.” The pain from my severed fingers made me tremble uncontrollably.
Someone asked in confusion,
“What’s this lunatic doing?”
Celine paused in her tracks, her eyes falling to the ground.
When the incomplete “Kris” came into view, her pupils dilated in shock.
“Kris?”
I nodded desperately, tears of blood mixing with the name as they fell onto it.
Seeing my pitiful state, Celine’s chest tightened in pain, and even her throat felt constricted, as though it were filled with wet cotton. But as Liam moaned in discomfort in her arms, without a second thought, Celine stomped hard on my fingers.
“Do you even deserve to write my husband’s name?”
“Liam said he’s fainting from the blood—you dare to scare him like this with all your bleeding?”
Even though my mind was beginning to fade, Celine still wasn’t satisfied with the torment.
She kicked me hard in the side again, sneering, “Looks like they were right—you thought I’d save you, huh? Dream on! You’re not even worth a single hair of my husband’s!”
If she hadn’t been holding Liam in her arms at that moment, maybe her words would have carried more weight.
A large surge of warm liquid gushed from my wounds, and even the soles of Celine’s shoes were stained with blood.
“Celine, this blood loss isn’t normal!”
“You’re getting married tomorrow—having blood on your hands is bad luck. Should we just forget this?”
Someone tried to intervene.
But Celine barked, “Shut your cursed mouth!”
She then ordered the underground fight arena to call a doctor to try and keep me alive.
“If he dies, it’s his own fault for being so weak!”
The pain crashed over me in waves, the agony so intense that even passing out felt like a luxury.
Celine’s friends took turns standing guard over me, making sure that if I died, they’d deal with it quickly.
To them, I was just a living corpse. Their conversation drifted in and out of my ears as they talked freely, uncaring of my suffering.
“Celine’s amazing, huh? She even got Liam to agree to be her lifelong lover!”
“Right? Liam hadn’t even graduated, and he was already her lover. I remember, just not long ago, Kristian proposed to her.”
So, Celine had been cheating on me for two years.
I had no idea how her heart had split in two, how she could act so deeply in love with me, while simultaneously betraying me.
I lay in the blood pool, feeling my life slipping away with every drop.
After what seemed like forever, the bleeding finally stopped.
In my haze, I heard Celine’s footsteps returning.
“Celine, he’s so pitiful—someone’s already gone after his kidneys. Let’s just let him go, consider it a charitable donation...”
Liam, with a look of reluctance, tried to plead on my behalf, but Celine sneered coldly.
“Liam, you’re just too kind! This kind of scum, who can’t be taught by the law, needs someone to discipline him in place of his parents.”
A new round of torment was about to begin.
After all, the rule of the underground fight arena was clear: if you owed money and couldn’t pay, you had to pay with your body. As long as you didn’t die, you could continue being a tool for their stress relief.
My consciousness swayed, teetering between excruciating pain and the desire for unconsciousness.
The sounds around me were a blur, as though muffled by a thick, blood-soaked fog.
Someone roughly grabbed my limbs and dragged me into a damp, dark basement, tossing me onto the cold cement floor.
"Ms. Alba said not to let him die. We need him for tomorrow."
The iron door slammed shut with a deafening bang, and darkness swallowed everything.
I curled up in the corner, my body shaking with pain, while my heart had long since gone numb.
I didn't know how much time passed, but Celine's impatient voice finally cut through the silence, echoing through the brightened surveillance screen.
"Why can't I reach Kristian?"
"Celine, don’t worry, Kristian is probably just busy with work."
"Bullshit! He wouldn't ignore my calls no matter how busy he is! Besides, he promised me he’d take care of himself!"
Celine's voice was thick with panic.
My heart lurched, as if squeezed by an invisible hand, and I held my breath.
She was looking for me!
The next moment, Celine received another call.
The voice of her friend, Theo, came through clearly. "Celine, is Kristian with you? His phone’s been unreachable!"
Celine suppressed her anxiety, pausing for a moment before responding in a calm tone. "He's probably secretly working overtime. You know how obsessed he is with his work."
Theo immediately denied it. "Impossible! Tomorrow is the wedding. He wouldn’t still be working at this hour!"
Celine fell silent for a few seconds before hurriedly pulling out her phone to check the surveillance footage for my whereabouts.
My heart raced, and a tiny spark of hope flickered.
Would she notice something was wrong?
Would she recognize that the person nearly killed by her hands today was me?
"There's no one at home. Looks like I was right. Don't worry, Theo. Kristian is either still working or just taking his time getting home."
She hung up the phone and turned to those around her, ordering, "Get the car ready. I'll take Liam home first."
The hope that had started to build was immediately crushed.
She would rather believe I was just dawdling on the road than face the reality that the gambler she had tortured almost to death was her fiancé.
"Celine, aren’t you going to play a bit more? You’re leaving so early?"
Her friends, disappointed by the way things turned out, hadn't fully enjoyed themselves.
Celine’s expression instantly turned cold. "Tomorrow is my wedding with Kristian. If I’m not going back to be with him, am I supposed to stay here with you?"
The group fell silent.
But Liam boldly wrapped his arm around her waist, pouting. "Celine, can you stay with me tonight? From tomorrow on, you won’t belong to me anymore, I’m so sad..."
"Liam! You need to know your place. I said I’d spoil you tonight to help you unwind, and you should be grateful. I don’t like greedy men!"
Her harsh words were easily shattered by Liam. "Celine, I bought the suit you love. Tonight, you can enjoy it to your heart's content..."
The air seemed to freeze for a moment.
I could hear Celine’s breathing growing heavy, her eyes swirling with lust.
She pulled out her phone and sent me a voice message in a tone so sweet it seemed fake. "Kristian, I had a bit too much to drink at the bachelorette party, so I’m staying at my friend's place tonight. Be good and sleep well, and tomorrow, I’ll marry you."
As soon as she finished, she jumped into Liam’s arms, kissing him passionately.
I watched them leave in a hurry, their backs full of impatience. Silent tears streamed down my face, but the pain from the cuts on my face made it so I couldn’t even cry properly.
So this was her kindness.
So this was her love.
I closed my eyes, and memories rushed in like a tidal wave.
Two years ago, when Celine accepted my proposal, her eyes were filled with starlight.
