Chapter 1

I saved my virginity for Liam, the boyfriend who ignored my texts and called sex with me a chore.

Then he summoned me to room 806: We need to talk about our future.

I opened 906 instead.

The room was dark, the stranger fever-hot, and I begged him to take everything Liam never wanted.

Four weeks later, I caught Liam with my boss, collapsed bleeding at dinner, and woke six weeks pregnant.

The stranger kicked down the clinic door.

He was Kaelan Rexford, billionaire owner of my hotel and father of the child inside me.

He moved me into his penthouse, surrounded me with doctors, and marched me back to the office that had humiliated me.

When Chloe crushed my mother’s photograph beneath her heel, Kaelan caught her raised wrist.

He fired Liam, sent Chloe toward prison, froze her family’s fortune, and made everyone watch.

For one reckless second, I thought the wrong room had delivered my savior.

Then he poured whiskey and looked at my belly.

“Don’t mistake cleanup for kindness.”

“You are the vessel, nothing more.”

“I’m your owner, Aria.”

“You are a contract with a heartbeat.”

***

ARIA'S POV

My feet were fucking killing me.

Twelve hours in heels. Twelve hours of smiling at shareholders who couldn't remember my name. Twelve hours of running interference for my boss, who got drunk on champagne and tried to slap the CFO's ass during the keynote speech.

The Marriott ballroom finally emptied out around midnight.

I was in the service hallway, leaning against an ice machine, texting Liam for the fifth time.

No response.

No response for three days, actually.

I stared at my phone screen. The little "read" receipt from yesterday's message still sat there like a middle finger.

Then it buzzed.

Liam: Room 806. We need to talk about us. About our future.

My heart did something stupid. A flutter. A skip. A rookie fucking mistake.

He wanted to talk about our future. That was code. It had to be code. We'd been cold for weeks—him working late, me working late, both of us sleeping on opposite edges of the bed like the middle was lava. But this was him fixing it. This was him showing up.

I shoved off the ice machine.

My reflection in the elevator mirror was a crime scene. Smudged mascara. Hair escaping its updo like it was fleeing the country. The dress was still decent—black, simple, the one that made my boobs look like they had their life together.

Eighth floor.

The hallway stretched out, dim and carpeted in that pattern hotels use to hide stains. I walked past 801. 802.

803.

My keycard was the employee master. Perk of working event management for the biggest hospitality group in the city. I could open any door in the building.

Room 806.

Except my eyes were blurring. The numbers swam. I blinked hard, pressed the card to the reader.

Click.

The door swung open into absolute blackness.

"Liam?"

Silence.

The room smelled wrong. Not like hotel soap and recycled air. Something sharper. Cedar. Whiskey. And underneath that—

A sound.

Low. Guttural. The kind of noise a man makes when he's been punched in the gut and he's trying not to scream.

"Liam, baby, are you okay?"

I stepped deeper into the dark.

My shin hit a coffee table. I cursed, hopping. The door clicked shut behind me. Total blackout. Curtains drawn tight. The air thick enough to chew.

"I've been waiting for this," I whispered into the void. "I know we've been... I know I've been distant. But I'm here now. I want this. I want you."

The sound came again. Closer.

A growl.

That's the only word for it. A fucking growl, low and ripped from somewhere deep.

And then his hand found me.

Not gentle. Not questioning. His palm clamped around my wrist and yanked. I stumbled forward, face- planting into a chest that felt like a goddamn wall. Solid. Hot. His skin was on fire—literally fever-hot, slick with sweat.

"Liam—"

His mouth hit my throat.

Not a kiss. A devouring. Teeth scraping. Tongue pressing flat against my pulse point. The sound was wet and obscene—schlrrrp—and my knees turned to water.

Holy fuck.

This was not the man who'd been scrolling Instagram while I tried to initiate sex for the past two months.

This was not the man who'd said "I'm tired" seventeen times in a row. This was something else entirely.

Something Liam had been hiding.

Something I desperately wanted him to keep showing me.

"Yes," I gasped. "Yes. Fuck. Whatever this is. Yes."

His response was to rip my dress.

I heard the seams go before I felt it. Rrrrip. The black fabric peeled away like gift wrap. Cold air hit my nipples and they went instantly, painfully hard. Then his mouth was there—plrrrp—sucking one tight peak between his lips with a wet pop that echoed off the walls.

"Mmmnpfh."

The sound vibrated through my breast. Animal. Desperate. Like he was starving and I was the first meal he'd seen in years.

I buried my fingers in his hair.

Thick hair. Really thick. I grabbed handfuls of it and pulled his face harder against my chest. "Don't stop.

Please don't fucking stop. I need this. I've been needing this for so long."

He didn't stop.

His hands moved everywhere. Gripping my ass. Digging into my hips. One palm slid between my thighs and I was already soaked—embarrassingly soaked—my panties a slick disaster against his fingers. He didn't bother removing them. Just yanked the cotton aside and—

Sllllrrrk.

Two thick fingers pushed inside me.

My head snapped back. The stretch was immediate, intense, almost too much. I made a noise I'd never made before. Half-moan, half-choke. Glrk.

"So tight," he growled against my collarbone. "So fucking wet."

The voice was rougher than Liam's. Deeper. But I didn't process that. Couldn't process anything except the way his fingers curled inside me, hitting some spot that made my vision white out.

"More," I begged. "Fuck, please. I want your cock. I want you inside me when you say you love me. I want—"

He flipped me.

Face-down on what felt like a leather couch. My cheek pressed into cold material. Ass in the air. His hand between my shoulder blades, pinning me like a butterfly to a board.

Shhhhhk.

A zipper.

Not Liam's usual khakis. Something heavier. The sound was metal, substantial, expensive.

Then the blunt head of his cock pressed against my entrance.

"Say my name," he rasped. "Tell me who's fucking you."

"Liam," I whispered. "Liam. You're going to split me in half and I don't fucking care. Do it. Do it now."

He pushed.

Not slow. Not patient. One brutal thrust that buried him to the hilt. SCHLORTCH. The sound was absolutely filthy—my wetness and his size and the force of it all combining into something that should have its own adult content rating.

I screamed.

Not in pain. In relief. In the absolute mind-breaking pleasure of being filled so completely that I forgot where

I ended and he began.

He didn't pause. Didn't let me adjust. Just pulled back and slammed in again. Splrtch. Splrtch. Splrtch. A rhythm so punishing the couch legs scraped against the floor with every stroke.

"Fuck, fuck, fuck—"

I was chanting it like a prayer. My tits bounced against the leather. Drool pooled under my cheek. The wet sounds between my thighs were getting louder, nastier—shlick-shlick-slosh—my juices smearing everywhere, dripping down my thighs in hot rivulets.

His hand fisted in my hair. Pulled my head back. His mouth pressed to my ear, breath ragged and scorching.

"Gonna fill this tight little pussy. Gonna pump you so full you'll taste it."

Splortch.

Deeper. Somehow deeper. Hitting places that shouldn't exist.

"Yes," I sobbed. "Yes, do it, come inside me, I'm on the pill, just fucking give it to me—"

His hips stuttered.

His cock throbbed.

And my hand, questing backward, desperate to touch him, slid across his stomach.

His stomach.

I froze.

My palm mapped ridges. Hard muscle. Defined. Sculpted. A washboard of fucking abs that had never known a desk job or a skipped gym day.

And then my fingers found it.

A scar. Long. Ragged. Starting below his ribs and curving toward his hip. Old. Thick. The kind of mark you get from something violent.

Liam didn't have a scar.

Liam didn't have abs.

Liam didn't growl or rip dresses or fuck like a man possessed.

The orgasm was still building—my body didn't know the difference, didn't care about the horror dawning in my brain—but my mind was screaming now. Shrill and clear and absolutely terrified.

"Who—"

The word came out strangled.

His cock was still buried inside me. Still hard. His hips still pumping.

And I still couldn't see his face.

"Who the fuck are you?"

Chapter 2

ARIA'S POV

I don't remember getting out of that room.

One second I was pinned to the leather couch, his cock still buried inside me, my question hanging in the dark like a live grenade. The next second I was moving. Scrambling. My ripped dress clutched to my chest.

My heels abandoned on the floor.

The stranger didn't chase me.

Didn't say a word.

I felt his stillness in the darkness. The weight of his silence. Then the door slammed behind me and I was in the hallway, naked from the waist down, slick running down my inner thighs in hot, shameful streaks.

I made it to the stairwell before I vomited.

Nothing came up. Just bile and shaking and the aftershock of an orgasm my body had enjoyed without knowing any better.

Room 906.

Not 806.

I'd opened the wrong door. Offered myself to the wrong man. Begged him to come inside me using my boyfriend's name while he fucked me into a leather couch.

My hand was still sticky. Still smelled like him. Cedar and whiskey and something darker underneath.

I stumbled down eight flights of stairs and found a staff bathroom on the ground floor. Scrubbed myself raw with paper towels and industrial soap. The mirror showed a woman I didn't recognize. Her mascara was a crime scene. Her neck was a bruise garden. Her eyes—my eyes—had the glassy, skittish look of someone who'd seen a ghost and let it rail her into next week.

I didn't go to room 806.

I didn't look for Liam.

I went home. Sat in the shower until the water ran cold. Stared at the tile and tried to convince myself it hadn't happened.

But my hips ached. My thighs ached. There was a tenderness between my legs that had nothing to do with romance and everything to do with being fucked within an inch of my life by a man whose face I never saw.

Splortch.

I could still hear it. Still feel it. The stretch. The fullness. The wet, obscene sounds my body made around him.

Shlick-shlick-slosh.

My pussy clenched at the memory and I wanted to die.

---

Dawn came too fast.

I dragged myself to work because calling in sick meant sitting alone with my brain, and my brain was not a safe neighborhood right now.

The employee break room on the third floor was empty when I arrived. I poured burnt coffee into a styrofoam cup and stood at the window, watching the city wake up, trying to remember how normal people breathed.

Then I heard it.

A giggle.

From the supply closet.

The door was cracked. Three inches. Enough to see. Enough to destroy whatever was left of my morning.

Chloe.

My director. The woman who'd spent three years making my life a slow, bureaucratic hell. The woman who took credit for my event logistics and blamed me for her budget overruns.

She was pressed against a shelf of printer paper, skirt hiked up, legs wrapped around a man's waist.

The man was Liam.

My Liam.

The Liam who'd texted me to meet in 806. Who apparently had a backup plan when I didn't show.

"You're such a bad boy," Chloe was cooing. "Standing up your little girlfriend."

"Please." Liam's voice. Liam's sneer. "She's not my girlfriend. She's a situation. Something I inherited from college that won't stop clinging."

My coffee cup crumpled. Hot liquid spilled over my knuckles. I didn't feel it.

"Tell me more," Chloe purred, grinding against him. "Tell me why you're trading down."

"Trading up. Trust me." He kissed her neck. The same way I'd imagined he was kissing mine last night.

"Aria's boring. She's a fucking nun. Three years together and she treats sex like a hostage negotiation. Never initiates. Never gets wet. Just lies there waiting for it to be over."

Schlrrrp.

The sound of his mouth on Chloe's throat.

The same sound the stranger made on mine.

"She's also broke," Liam continued, and his voice was light, conversational, like he was discussing a stock portfolio instead of eviscerating the woman he'd asked to discuss his future. "Student loans up to her eyeballs. Always hinting about moving in together so she can split rent. I'm not an ATM, Chloe. I'm a man with needs."

"Mm. And what do you need?"

"A woman who actually likes fucking. Not some starfish who makes me feel like a rapist every time I want something other than missionary."

I couldn't move.

Couldn't breathe.

Couldn't unhear the casual cruelty in his voice. The way he described me—starfish, nun, hostage negotiation

—like I was a problem to be managed. A burden. A joke.

I'd saved myself for him.

Three years of saying "not yet." Three years of wanting it to be special. Three years of believing that when I finally said yes, he'd understand why I waited.

And now—

Now my first time belonged to a stranger with a scar and a growl. And my boyfriend was in a supply closet with my boss, describing my sexual inadequacy while she humped him against office supplies.

"You're terrible," Chloe giggled.

"I'm honest. She's a dead fish in bed and a leech in my wallet. I was going to dump her last night. She didn't even show up." He snorted. "Probably for the best. Let her figure it out on her own."

Something in my chest cracked.

Not metaphorically.

I felt it. A physical snap. A clean break somewhere between my ribs.

I backed away from the door. Silent. Slow. My hand was shaking so badly the coffee cup slipped and hit the floor. Splat. Brown liquid everywhere.

They didn't notice.

I ran.

---

Four weeks passed.

I didn't confront Liam. Didn't confront Chloe. Didn't make a scene. What was there to say? You broke my heart, so I let a total stranger rail me senseless and now I can't stop thinking about his abs?

No.

I swallowed it. Buried it. Went to work and did my job and ignored the way Chloe smirked at me in meetings.

Ignored the way Liam's contact photo disappeared from my phone after he finally sent the "it's over" text.

But my body wouldn't let me forget.

The nausea started week two.

Morning sickness—except it wasn't just mornings. It was elevators and coffee smells and the sight of Chloe's smug face across the conference table.

Gllrk.

I spent half my shifts ducking into bathrooms, dry-heaving into toilets, pressing cold paper towels to the back of my neck.

My breasts swelled. Ached. The shower spray hurt. My bras stopped fitting. I bought cheap sports bras two sizes up and tried not to think about what it meant.

The exhaustion was biblical. I fell asleep on the subway. Fell asleep at my desk. Fell asleep sitting upright in the break room while my tea went cold.

Week four brought the corporate dinner.

A delegation from a German investment firm. Billion-euro portfolios. The kind of money that made even

Chloe's lizard brain sit up and pay attention.

She assigned me to serve wine to the "special guests."

Not waitstaff. Not catering. Me. The event manager with three years of experience and a degree in hospitality logistics.

"Just keep their glasses full," Chloe said, smiling her snake smile. "And maybe loosen a button or two. Herr

Meissner appreciates... hospitality."

Herr Meissner was seventy-two with breath like a distillery and hands that didn't understand the concept of personal space.

The first time his palm found my ass, I sidestepped.

The second time, he cornered me against the dessert table. His fingers crawled up my thigh. His wedding ring was cold against my skin. His colleagues watched and chuckled like this was dinner theater.

"Excuse me," I said, voice tight. "I need to—"

"Don't be rude, Aria."

Chloe's voice, right behind me.

Her hand between my shoulder blades.

The shove came hard and sudden. I stumbled forward, right into Herr Meissner's lap, his erection pressing against my hip through expensive wool trousers, his delighted "Ach!" ringing in my ear.

The room spun.

My stomach lurched.

The cramping in my abdomen—the dull, persistent ache I'd been ignoring for days—exploded.

Not a cramp.

A rupture.

Something warm gushed between my legs. Not the slick of arousal this time. Something thicker. Hotter. Wet blood soaking through my skirt, streaking down my thighs in crimson rivers.

Splrrrt.

The sound of my body betraying me.

"Mein Gott—"

"Someone call—"

"She's bleeding—"

I hit the floor face-first. The carpet tasted like champagne and metal. The world went gray, then black, and the last thing I heard before consciousness fled was Chloe's voice, cold and clipped, saying: "God, she's so dramatic."

---

Beeping.

Soft sheets.

The antiseptic smell of a private clinic.

I surfaced slowly. My mouth tasted like cotton. There was an IV in my arm and a catheter somewhere I didn't want to think about.

The VIP wing of the corporate medical center. I recognized the dove-gray walls. The expensive silence. This was where the execs got their Botox and their discreet STD treatments.

A doctor stood beside my bed.

Dr. Nazari. Silver hair. Kind eyes. Holding a tablet with my ultrasound results.

"Aria," she said quietly. "You're awake."

"What—" My voice came out sandpaper. "What happened?"

"You collapsed at the corporate dinner. Hemorrhaging. We almost lost you."

The cramping. The blood. Splrrrt. The sound came back in a rush and I flinched.

"Was it... my period? I've been irregular—"

"No." Dr. Nazari's face did something complicated. "Aria, you're pregnant. Approximately six weeks along.

The bleeding was a subchorionic hematoma—a tear in the uterine lining. The fetus is still viable, but barely.

You're very lucky to be alive."

Pregnant.

The word didn't compute.

Six weeks.

I counted backward. Counted forward. Hit the night in room 906 like a brick wall.

Gonna fill this tight little pussy. Gonna pump you so full you'll taste it.

The stranger's voice. The stranger's promise. The stranger's consequence, now growing inside me like a ticking bomb.

"No," I whispered. "No. That's not—I didn't—"

"The ultrasound shows a healthy gestational sac. Strong heartbeat."

Heartbeat.

His heartbeat. Some faceless, nameless man's genetic material had latched onto my uterine wall and started building a person while I'd been dry-heaving into toilets and thinking I had food poisoning.

"I need pills." I grabbed Dr. Nazari's wrist. My fingers were bone-white and shaking. "Abortion pills.

Whatever you have. I can't—you don't understand—I don't even know who—"

Dr. Nazari opened her mouth.

The clinic door opened faster.

Not slid. Not swung.

BANG.

Splintered. Broken off its hinges. Kicked inward by a force that made the walls tremble.

A silhouette filled the doorway.

Tall. Shoulders like a cliff face. Hair thick and dark, disheveled, like he'd run his hands through it a hundred times on the way here.

And his voice.

The growl I'd heard in the dark. The rasp that had told me to say his name. The voice I'd been trying to forget for four weeks straight.

"Where is she?"

Dr. Nazari stepped back. "Sir, you can't—visiting hours—security—"

"Where. Is. She."

His eyes found the bed.

Found me.

Gray eyes. Storm-colored. Wild.

And I knew—

I knew exactly who had kicked down the door.

I just didn't know his name.

Chapter 3

ARIA'S POV

The man in the doorway didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Just stood there with splintered wood at his feet and a storm brewing behind gray eyes.

Dr. Nazari's hand found my shoulder. "Security is on the way. Sir, I must insist—"

"No."

One word. Quiet. Deadly.

He stepped into the room and the air changed. The pressure dropped. My ears popped like we were ascending too fast in an elevator.

I knew that voice. I'd heard it in the dark. Heard it growl filthy promises against my ear while his cock split me open.

Schlrrrp.

My pussy clenched at the memory. Involuntary. Shameful. The catheter shifted and I winced.

"Don't," I croaked. "Don't come near me."

He ignored me completely.

His hand emerged from his suit pocket. Dangling from his fingers—my employee identification bracelet. The silver one with my name engraved. The one I'd lost that night.

The one that had fallen between the couch cushions while he fucked me senseless.

"You dropped this."

Splortch. The wet sound from that night echoed in my skull. My thighs pressed together under the hospital sheet and the catheter tugged painfully.

"I don't know who you are." Liar. My body knew. My body had been remembering for four weeks straight. "I don't know what you want."

"Kaelan."

"What?"

"My name. Kaelan Rexford." He said it like a judge reading a verdict. "CEO of Rexford Global. Owner of the hotel you work for. The man who fucked you through a leather couch four weeks ago."

Dr. Nazari made a small, strangled sound.

"The man," Kaelan continued, stepping closer, "whose child is currently inside you."

"No." I shook my head. Too fast. The room spun. "No. It's not—the baby isn't—"

"Isn't mine?"

He smiled.

It wasn't a nice smile. It was the smile of a man who'd already won and knew it.

"You're about to lie to me, Aria. Don't."

"It's Liam's." The words tumbled out, desperate and pathetic. "My boyfriend. My ex-boyfriend. We were together for three years. The baby is his. You're just some—some stranger who—"

"Liam Patterson." Kaelan's smile didn't waver. "Twenty-eight. Marketing associate. Five-foot-eleven. One hundred sixty pounds soaking wet. Hasn't had sex with you in over six months."

My mouth opened. Closed.

"You initiated three times in the past half-year," Kaelan said, pulling a folded document from his jacket.

"Each time, he rejected you. Too tired. Too busy. Too invested in scrolling Instagram models while you slept next to him in a T-shirt you'd bought specifically because he said he liked the color."

"How—"

"And Chloe Marsden." His eyes flicked down to the paper. "Your director. Forty-one. Divorced twice.

Currently fucking your ex-boyfriend in supply closets and budget meetings. She's been filing fraudulent expense reports for eighteen months. I know because I had my security team pull every record the moment I found out who you were."

The document landed on my lap.

Not a single sheet. A dossier. Thirty pages. Bank records. Medical files. Liam's text logs. Chloe's HR complaints. My mother's hospital bills.

Sllrp.

The sound of my life being stripped naked.

"You've been a virgin for twenty-six years," Kaelan said. "Well. You were."

Dr. Nazari stepped backward toward the door. "I should—"

"Stay." Kaelan didn't look at her. "She might hemorrhage again. You'll be needed."

The doctor froze.

I stared at the dossier. At my own medical records. Virgin. No prior pregnancies. No STDs. The bloodwork from my annual physical six months ago, right there in black and white.

"You were saving yourself," Kaelan said, and his voice dropped. "For him. For that spineless little shit who called you a starfish and a leech. Three years of saying no, and then you walked into my room and said yes to everything."

"Stop."

"You begged for my cock. You screamed for it. You told me to come inside you and I did."

Fuck.

The word pulsed in my clit. A throb. A betrayal.

"You don't understand how rare this is." He tapped the dossier. "My genetic profile is... aggressive. My sperm motility is ninety-eighth percentile. My testosterone levels are clinically anomalous. Most women miscarry within the first two weeks. Their bodies reject the implantation. The uterine lining sloughs off and they never even know they were pregnant."

He leaned closer.

His hand braced on the bed rail. His knuckles brushed my hip through the sheet.

"You hemorrhaged at four weeks and the fetus survived. The hematoma is resolving on its own. The heartbeat is strong. You're still pregnant, Aria. Still carrying my heir. That's not luck."

His gray eyes burned.

"That's a fucking miracle."

"I don't want it." My voice cracked. "I want pills. I want a procedure. I want this thing out of me."

The room went cold.

Not metaphorical. Physical. The temperature dropped like someone had opened a freezer door.

Kaelan's face didn't change. His expression stayed perfectly, terrifyingly blank.

"My mother," he said quietly, "was pregnant once. Before me. My father's mistress cornered her in a parking garage. Kicked her in the stomach until she miscarried. She almost bled out on the concrete."

I didn't breathe.

"She survived. Barely. The mistress was never charged—my father's money, my father's lawyers. My mother spent the next ten years trying to conceive again. Eight miscarriages. Two stillbirths. Then me."

He straightened.

"I've spent my entire adult life funding fetal research. Neonatal care. Anti-miscarriage drug trials. I've poured six hundred million dollars into keeping pregnancies viable. And you—" His jaw tightened. "You're lying in this bed, carrying my child, asking me to let you kill it."

"It's my body—"

"It's my bloodline." His palm slammed the bed rail. CLANG. "It's the only leverage I have to break a forced engagement with a woman who drugged me at my own fucking gala. Seraphina dosed my drink with a compound designed to make me insatiable. Do you know why?"

I shook my head.

"She wanted me to fuck her. To impregnate her. To chain me to her family's fortune through a child I'd never wanted. Instead, I got you. A stranger. An accident. The one woman in this city whose body was somehow compatible enough to hold on."

His hand released the rail.

"You're not aborting my child, Aria. You're not going anywhere. You're moving into my penthouse tonight."

"Fuck you—"

"Liam Patterson will be fired tomorrow morning. Incompetence. Gross misconduct. He'll never work in this city again."

My heart stopped.

"Chloe Marsden will be terminated and prosecuted for embezzlement. The fraudulent expense reports alone are worth eighteen months in federal prison. I'll make sure the judge is not lenient."

"You can't—"

"Your mother." He said it softly. Almost gently. "St. Catherine's Long-Term Care. Room 214. Ventilator- dependent. Multiple sclerosis with rapid progression. Her insurance covers seventy percent. You cover the rest through your salary. Salary that comes from my company."

My vision tunneled.

"If you terminate this pregnancy, I will terminate her care. The insurance lapses. The machines turn off. She dies gasping for air in a state-funded hospice bed while you watch."

"You wouldn't."

"I would burn this city to the ground for my bloodline. Don't test me."

Dr. Nazari made a small noise. Horror. Disgust. She didn't dare move.

I was crying. When did I start crying? Hot tears streaking sideways into my hair, pooling in my ears.

"Why?" I whispered. "Why me? I'm nobody. I'm a fucking event planner. I'm—"

"You're the mother of my child." Kaelan pulled his suit jacket straight. "Your only value is staying healthy enough to deliver. After that, we renegotiate."

He turned toward the door.

His shoes crunched on shattered wood.

"A medical suite will be set up in the penthouse. Dr. Nazari will oversee your care. You'll have a nutritionist, a prenatal specialist, and a security detail. You will not leave the building without my permission. You will not make phone calls. You will not access the internet unsupervised."

"Please—"

"Tonight." He didn't look back. "Pack whatever dignity you have left. You're going to need it."

The doorframe was empty.

The hallway was silent.

And I was trapped.

Not in a hospital bed. Not in a penthouse cage.

Trapped inside my own body. Inside the pregnancy that was the only thing keeping my mother alive. Inside the consequences of a mistake I'd made in the dark with a man I'd never seen coming.

My hand slid to my stomach.

Flat. Still flat. But underneath—underneath, something had a heartbeat.

Something that belonged to him.

Splrrrt.

The IV drip.

Ssssssh.

The oxygen feed.

And somewhere in the building, growing fainter with distance, the sound of expensive shoes on hospital tile.

Walking away. Taking everything with him.
