Chapter 3

I let out a soft laugh and replied, “I didn't curse anyone. The facts are right in front of us.”

Lorenzo saw that I was being sarcastic and pointed at me. He said angrily, “Your husband is about to be seduced by that vixen Jessica. And you're still acting like it doesn't matter to you.”

When life and death were on the line, the bad nature of human nature was exposed. There was no room for previous friendships anymore.

On the other side, Damien was beaten so badly by his friends that he couldn't stand up straight. Meanwhile, Jessica's carefully combed hair was also messed up.

Seeing Jessica's eyes turn into red eyes, my husband was completely enraged. He pulled out an electric baton from his pocket and threatened, “If you touch Jessica again, I won't hold back.”

He was the leader of our neighborhood. It made him often carry an electric baton during safety patrols.

I didn’t expect it turned out to be just what he needed. Seeing him press the current switch with red eyes, the group of people quieted down again.

Jessica threw herself into Damien's arms. Her high heels were stomped on the ground.

“Damien, they messed up my hairstyle!”

He comforted Jessica while speaking confidently, “Even if the stairs are broken, I have a way to get you all down safely.”

Hearing this, Lorenzo was so angry that he laughed. “How do we get down? Fly down?”

Damien snorted disdainfully. He glared at Lorenzo with disdain.

“Lorenzo, of course, you’d say that you are really a brainless person who dropped out of elementary school.”

He replied, “If the stairs are broken, there's still the elevator. We can just take the elevator down, right?”

Someone immediately raised an objection. “The power in the building has been cut off for a long time, not to mention that we don't know if the elevator can still be used normally. You’re basically telling us to jump into a fire pit!”

Damien proudly lifted his chin. “I’m the property manager of this neighborhood. I just took the maintenance worker to inspect the elevator yesterday. It’s really perfectly safe. And there won’t be any issues again.”

“There will be workers passing by here in ten minutes. We can ask them to restore the power for us.”

Upon hearing this, I fixed my gaze on Damien. I could confirm that he had also been reborn. In his previous life, there had indeed been workers who escaped from the factory and passed by the neighborhood.

But unfortunately, the workers didn't recognize Jessica and weren't willing to risk their lives to save her. After hearing Damien say this, everyone's eyes were full of hope. Only Lorenzo was still holding back his anger.

“If it weren’t for you, we would have escaped long ago. Why would we have to wait for someone to rescue us?”

Damien glared at him fiercely. Jessica sat in his lap and took out a small mirror.

She wanted to touch up her makeup while sarcastically saying, “If you have a better idea, then go ahead and leave. We’re not stopping you.”

Lorenzo was flustered. His face looked increasingly red. I didn’t stay there but walked straight toward the broken staircase.

Damien reached out and grabbed my hand. “Where do you think you’re going?”

I replied calmly, “I’m going to jump down. Those workers don’t know you, guys. So why should they help you?”

Damien glared at me angrily. “Do you think everyone is as cold-blooded as you? So many people are trapped here, I believe that they'll definitely help us!”

I shrugged and said with a smile, “I hope so.”

After saying that, I bit the bullet and jumped down. As soon as I touched the ground, my legs felt a sharp pain. My entire ankle swelled up.

Jessica looked down at me. Her eyes were full of provocation and gloating.

“Eugenia, are you okay?”

Damien snorted coldly, “It must be a fracture.”

“Why don't you just stay where you are and wait for someone to come and rescue you? You had to be a hero.”

They didn't know that there would be another wave of aftershocks before the workers arrived. That was also the main reason Jessica became disabled.

Chapter 4

In my previous life, I tried desperately to persuade everyone to push Damien off the cliff, but I never expected that Damien wouldn't take me seriously from beginning to end.

Since that was the case, all of you could go to hell together. I looked up at my friends who were gathering around to watch the commotion and tried to reason with them.

“Jump down now! Although you will get hurt, at least it's better than ending up crippled. There will be aftershocks in about ten minutes.”

But they just rolled their eyes at me coldly. Their eyes fell on my legs they could hardly stand up. They then fell silent.

Jessica acted boldly. She arrogantly nestled in Damien’s arms, tracing circles on his chest with her fingers.

She said, “Eugenia, since you’ve married Damien, you shouldn’t always go against him. It's better for us women to be more dependent on others, you know?”

She deliberately pressed her lips against Damien’s neck. Her act was just like a gentle and innocent little rabbit.

I sneered in response, “By the way, he's my husband. Are you sure you’re clinging to the right man?”

Jessica's face turned red instantly. Her eyes became red from the rebuke. She tried to explain but realized her status was merely Damien's friend. She had no right to say anything about me. The friends around us were watching the scene with schadenfreude.

Damien left a kiss on Jessica's forehead with a lovely gaze. He gently wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes.

Their intimate actions left everyone speechless. I didn't expect that the two of them would not even act in front of me.

Damien glared at me. He threatened to say, “If you bully Jessica one more time, I'll divorce you as soon as we get out! I can't accept you bullying my friend like this. Even if you are my wife.”

I laughed. “You've threatened me with divorce so many times, Damien. Do you really think you can control me right now?”

Before I could finish speaking, there was a rustling sound of footsteps downstairs. A group of workers who had just escaped from the factory were passing by our building.

Everyone suddenly perked up and started shouting down through the windows. Jessica didn't pretend to be pitiful anymore. She then shouted louder than anyone else.

“Uncle, please help us! We’re trapped upstairs!”

Damien pointed to Jessica beside him and said, “My wife’s dad used to be a colleague of yours. Please help us turn on the power downstairs.”

As soon as he finished speaking, Damien lowered his head and glared at me threateningly. He was afraid that I would expose him.

Before the workers could speak, Jessica pleaded with a trembling voice, “My dad is Theodore Joubert. He was caught in a machine over a decade ago and I…”

“You’re all my uncles. Please help us.”

She screamed at the top of her lungs. Her pitiful and wronged appearance touched the heart. Those unaware of the situation might have mistakenly believed Theodore Joubert was her dad.

My friends looked at me one after another. Though I despised her for publicly claiming him as her dad, I didn’t expose her at that moment.

“Eugenia Joubert! Are you Eugenia?”

Uncle Walter, who had watched me grow up from childhood, immediately grew tense. Jessica pretended to wipe away tears while choking back sobs and nodded.

Damien was standing beside her. He replied calmly, “Of course! Do you think we’d lie? She’s my wife!”

“Uncle, after my dad died, my mom couldn’t bear it and committed suicide. I’ve been alone and helpless all these years. I’m still young. I really don’t want to die!”

The workers downstairs all wiped away tears secretly. Unfortunately, they didn’t realize Theodore's daughter had grown so much.

When my dad was alive, he almost took care of them more or less. He was their elder brother.

Though the towering building before them was at risk of collapsing at any moment, they simply couldn't stand by and do nothing.

Chapter 5

Uncle Walter had already walked up to the circuit breaker. It happened that I had just climbed down from the upstairs.

I looked up at the two people who were in cahoots with each other and said, “You are Theodore's daughter, so who am I?”

Jessica unconsciously clenched her fists. Her expression panicked. Damien patted her shoulder to comfort her. He then stared at me with his head down.

“Eugenia, do you have to be so ruthless like this?”

At this point, Uncle Walter also noticed something was amiss. His gaze shifted between me and Jessica.

Jessica continued to defend herself, “Uncle, please turn it off first. Human life is more important!”

Uncle Walter, who had already recognized me, looked at me with a troubled expression. “After all, there are several people upstairs...”

I said, “Uncle, let them come down.”

I looked at my watch. There were less than three minutes left until the aftershock from the previous life occurred.

Even if they were lucky enough to come down, according to Jessica's reckless behavior, there would definitely be other opportunities. Everyone was watching now, so there was no need to tamper with things here.

After the power was turned on, Damien immediately got into the elevator. As soon as we reached the ground floor, he slapped me across the face without caring about my broken leg.

The blow left me seeing black spots. The blood trickled from the corner of my mouth.

“You wicked woman. Do you want us all to die up there before you're satisfied?”

I looked at Damien in disbelief. I never expected him to attack me.

“It was Jessica who impersonated me first.”

I touched my swollen face, which had been hit by my own husband and replied with a laugh sarcastically, “If it weren’t for me, Uncle Walter wouldn’t have bothered with you at all. You’ll still have to beg me to turn on the power.”

After confirming the elevator was functioning normally, the rest of the people took the elevator down. The looks in their eyes were filled with mockery and scorn at me.

The aftershock didn't happen. Out of everyone, only I had broken my leg. I looked utterly disheveled.

Jessica with her meticulously applied makeup. She was particularly eye-catching in the crowd.

She walked over to Damien's side. She linked her arm with his arm.

She then said arrogantly to me, “Eugenia, if you had listened to Damien's advice back then, you wouldn't have ended up like this.”

She gloated over my predicament. Uncle Walter felt sorry for my injuries, but he was still worried about his own family. After leaving me his phone number, he left with the other colleagues.

Seeing that the crisis was resolved, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Just as they were about to leave, Jessica hesitated, looking at the swaying building.

Finally, she couldn't resist tugging at Damien's arm and suggested, “When I went downstairs, I saw that many people had forgotten to lock their doors. Why don't we go up and see if there's anything valuable?”

“It's just sitting there anyway, so why not take advantage of it?”

She pouted and said to him coquettishly, “Damien, don't you think so?”

“Yeah, of course…”

Damien's voice trailed off as he turned to look at me.

“You go first.”

“Why me?” I asked in disbelief because their act was a little unbelievable.

“You're already injured anyway. If you die in an accident, it’s no loss. You can't let a healthy person like us take the risk, right?”

“I'm not going anywhere,” I said firmly.

“This is stealing, Damien.”

As the sky grew darker, everyone was too lazy to watch the argument and went their separate ways.

Only Jessica was unwilling to give up and said, “Damien, today is my birthday. Please grant me this wish. Why don't you come with me?”

Damien was also a reborn person, so he naturally knew that there would be more dangerous aftershocks. At that time, all the houses would collapse. The urgent priority was to head to the city hospital to seek shelter and avoid the disaster.
