Chapter 2

After I was done giving instructions to Clifford, I lay in bed and finally slept soundly for the first time in 20-something years.

When I opened my eyes again the next day, it was already noon.

I groggily reached for my phone on the bedside table and realized that my phone was brimming with countless abusive text messages and unknown missed calls.

While wondering who it could be playing such a prank on me, I went online and saw that the hashtag, "#evilDebbieEverett", was trending on social media. I clicked in and saw a snippet of Albert and Thelma tearfully accusing me of abuse on a television interview.

Thelma wiped her tears away on-screen, and her withering hands trembled uncontrollably.

Albert said, "We don't want anything from Debbie. We don't even expect her to pay for our medical treatment. We just want our home back."

He then proceeded to cough so hard that he couldn't even straighten himself up anymore.

"Our son is dead. We have nowhere to go, and we're truly desperate now. We can only place our hope in the law to reclaim our legal rights."

Albert then showed the camera a court summons for a hearing that was scheduled in seven days. He finally said emotionally, "If Debbie is willing to repent within the next seven days, then we will still acknowledge her as our daughter-in-law, and we will still be a supportive family to her."

The comment section under the video exploded with thousands of comments from the netizens.

"How could such a heartless woman even exist? This kind of person deserves to rot in hell!"

"That poor old lady! I felt so sorry for her that I nearly cried!"

"Doxx this ungrateful woman! Expose all her details online! We must get justice for the old couple!"

There was even a truckload of kind-hearted people who offered to raise money to pay for Albert's and Thelma's medical bills.

I scrolled through the horrible comments bordering on cyberbullying me. Then, I yawned in boredom before tossing my phone aside and putting on my skincare products while sipping on red wine.

Over the next few days, I kept receiving a lot of hate mail and hate packages in my mailbox, like voodoo dolls, dead rats, and even threatening notes. Some people had even edited my photo onto a tombstone and spread it online.

I also got a call from my boss, Paul Blackwell, who subtly informed me that the scandal and hateful comments were starting to affect the company as well, and he suggested that I take a temporary leave of absence until it all died down.

I just told him that I would resign. I spoke without hesitation and readily headed out to the company to file the resignation paperwork.

A group of nosy influencers, who were livestreaming, caught me outside my house and swarmed around me.

"Ms. Everett! Don't you feel any remorse for abusing your in-laws like this?"

"Remorse?" I asked. "Why would I feel any remorse? They're just a pair of insufferable, undead monsters who would be much better off dead. They're such a waste of food and oxygen.

"If you feel sorry for them, then you have my blessing to bring them home with you so you can care for them instead!"

My shocking statement instantly provided these nosy influencers with a surefire way to generate more traffic on their livestreaming platforms. At once, they got even more excited and practically shoved their cameras and phones in my face. They filmed my every movement.

I pushed my way through the crowd and suddenly turned around to face them with a smile.

"The court hearing is in three days. I'll see all of you there!"

Chapter 3

The day before the court hearing, the HOA chairman, Vince Gray, summoned me to the police station instead.

The station was packed with people.

There was a huge table in the center of the room. Albert and Thelma were seated on one end, looking completely aggrieved, with seven or eight of their relatives standing behind them. Meanwhile, I was seated alone on the other end of the table, like I was guilty of some heinous crime.

Vince sat at the head of the table and cleared his throat. Then, he loudly accused me, saying, "Ms. Everett, you know that the Blanchard family had been treating you very well in the past! How dare you seize their family property and steal it from them?"

I chuckled.

"What do you mean by saying that I seized it and stole it from them? I legally inherited the house. How could you say that I stole it?"

Vince was speechless.

"Deborah Everett, how could you chase the elderly couple out of their own house right after the passing of their son? Are you such a heartless woman after all? Do you not have a conscience?

"How could such a shameless and venomous woman like you even exist in this world?"

Albert's elder sister and Matt's aunt, Eloise Blanchard, was the first to open fire against me. She actually purposely dressed up for the occasion, wearing a tea-length dress in a neutral color with a white flower corsage pinned to her chest.

I stared at her empty wrist and recalled how she had stolen the gold bracelet Mom gave me as part of my wedding gift when I was on my deathbed due to stomach cancer. She even shamelessly said, "You're dying anyway. Might as well not waste it on you."

I replied, "Since you're such a kindhearted person, Aunt Eloise, why don't we discuss how you misappropriated Mom's and Dad's pension money by using it to invest in stocks? You made a loss of 200,000 dollars and then lied to them, saying that you had fallen victim to a telephone scam. Isn't that right?"

Eloise's face immediately turned as red as a tomato. Thelma immediately turned around to glare fiercely at her.

However, just a split second later, she put on a tearful and pitiful expression, hunched over in the chair, and burst into tears.

"My poor, poor son! How could you have left us at such a young age? How could you abandon us like this? How are we supposed to survive?

"Debbie, I have always treated you as my own daughter for so many years! How could you be so heartless toward us?

"Where did we go wrong? What did we do to you?"

Thelma's cries echoed loudly in the police station.

Even the police officer handling the case was somewhat touched by her words. His eyes filled with reproach as he looked at me. However, I remained as cold as ice.

Was that all Thelma had? I had even more surprises prepared for them!

I smiled lightly and slid over Matt's ID and social security card to the officer under Albert's and Thelma's noses. I said that I wanted to cancel his ID.

When Albert and Thelma realized what was happening, their faces turned deathly pale at once. Thelma immediately lunged at me as if I'd just stepped on her tail, but I neatly avoided her as I was prepared for it.

"You can't! You can't cancel my son's ID!"

Thelma's scream was loud and shrill, startling even the officer at the table.

I chuckled coldly.

"But he's dead. Why shouldn't I cancel his ID?"

"That's because if you did, Matt would—"

I knew that she wanted to say, "He would never be allowed to come back." It was just that she didn't dare to say it out loud.

Still, I insisted on cancelling Matt's ID and personal information.

Eloise immediately screamed at me and tried to grab the officer's laptop, while Matt's third granduncle, Hubert Blanchard, swung his cane directly at my head.

"That's enough!"

Even the officer couldn't stand it any longer.

"Ms. Everett is Mr. Matt Blanchard's legal spouse, and she has the right to cancel his ID and obtain a death certificate for him! If you keep up with this nonsense, I'm going to have to arrest the lot of you!"

The relatives didn't dare to cause any further trouble after being sternly warned by the officer. They could only watch helplessly as Matt's ID and information were canceled, making him appear dead in the system.

I looked at their ashen faces and felt a surge of pleasure well up inside my chest. Finally, I was avenging myself!

Matt wanted to play dead, didn't he? Well, of course, I had to make his wish come true and make sure he was truly as dead as a doorknob!

Chapter 4

After politely refusing help from the police regarding my situation, I made my way home in a smug yet lighthearted mood, continuing to enjoy my blissful life without having to serve Albert or Thelma.

I looked at my radiant self in the mirror and couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness.

In my past life, I was basically my in-laws' free caregiver. I attended to their every need, no matter day or night. I sacrificed my youth for this family. Eventually, I turned into a haggard, sickly woman.

However, all I got in return for my devotion was betrayal and deception. They'd even kicked me out of the house when I was terminally ill with stomach cancer.

Then, the bank statements showed up on my phone.

Every month, Albert and Thelma would use their ongoing "illness" to demand astronomical sums of money for their "medical expenses". And to afford their medical expenses, I worked myself to the bone and even took on three jobs every day just to make ends meet.

I could never bear to spend a single penny on myself and transferred everything I earned into their bank accounts instead.

However, in the end, all the money that they took was squandered away by Matt!

When I thought about that, a surge of intense hatred welled up inside my chest. I clenched my fists and dug my nails deep into my palms until they drew blood.

I called up the bank and withdrew all of the savings I'd put into Albert's and Thelma's accounts. Then, I used that money and cleared out everything on my Amazon wishlist. I even spent the money on all sorts of luxury items that I had always wanted but could never bear to buy.

I'd scrimped and saved for 20 years in my past life, not willing to spend anything on myself. This time, I was going to make sure that I reaped all of my rewards, and with interest this time.

Moments after their accounts were frozen, Thelma called, sobbing on the line.

"Debbie! Why did you have to be so cruel? Do you really have the heart to watch us freeze and starve to death?"

Thelma was trying to play the emotional card again, but I wasn't buying it this time.

I answered her coldly and sarcastically, "It's fine if you freeze to death. I can just throw your ashes in the trash after you've been cremated. That way, it won't end up polluting the environment after all."

After my burning remark, I hung up the phone with a cold resolve.
