My name was Jed Reed. I returned home after a business trip of more than two months and happened to see my wife at the gynecology department.
I found out that she had an ectopic pregnancy, had a rupture at 6 weeks, and had just undergone surgery a few days ago.
The nurse looked at me sympathetically.
"The time range from pregnancy to surgery is at most between 40 and 45 days, so there can't be any mistake."
I had never come home during my business trip, and my wife stopped working after marrying me. She didn't have any male friends either.
Who was she cheating with?
——
On the way home, I did a good deed by taking a postpartum woman to the hospital, but surprisingly, I saw my wife, Celeste Kain, at the gynecology department.
I called Celeste.
"Celeste, where are you? Didn't you say you would be at home today?"
"You're back?" She sounded a bit flustered on the phone, and then she coquettishly complained, "Why didn't you tell me in advance? Were you trying to check on me?"
The mechanical sound of the hospital's calling machine happened to call out her name.
She hurriedly explained.
"You've always wanted a baby, right? I asked Mom to accompany me to the hospital for a check-up and preparation for pregnancy. It's my turn. Talk to you when I get back. Be good."
Without waiting for me to reply, she hung up in a hurry.
Preparing for pregnancy?
We had been in love since university, and it had been more than five years. Also, we had been married for three years.
No matter how good I was to her, no matter what guarantees I made, she just didn't wanna have a baby with me.
Every time I mentioned it, she always said, "I am so not grown-up. Besides, you don't earn much money. How can we afford to raise a child?"
She had always been cautious about getting pregnant. I wondered which man had such charm to win her favor and catch her off guard.
I sat in the car and scrolled through the chat records with her and the photo album on my phone since the day I met her.
We had known each other for 2,154 days. From the day we met until today, I had changed several phones. I always bought phones with the largest memory and migrated all the records. I had never deleted a single message she sent me.
When I saw the chat we had this morning, I stopped scrolling. She coquettishly told me that if I didn't finish dealing with the client and come back on time, I'd have to buy her a Louis Vuitton bag as compensation.
I was already packing my luggage at that time. I had bought the bag she had been eyeing for a long time and planned to come back half a month in advance to give her a big surprise. I didn't expect that I would be the one who received the "surprise".
I wiped off the tears and sweat from my face and pressed the button to delete the chat history.
After talking to my friend working at the hospital, I obtained all her medical records. I then got out of the car and waited at the corner of the hospital.
After a long time, I finally saw my mother-in-law, Paige Vargas, getting into the car of Celeste's cousin, Rocky Shelton, together with Celeste. The three of them were laughing and talking happily.
The scene was kinda harsh, so I asked my assistant to spend a great sum of money to look into this matter.
At night, I handed the exquisite Louis Vuitton gift box to Celeste.
She looked at the bag several times with satisfaction before wrapping her arms around my neck, laughing, and kissing me.
"Jed, you're the best. Did you really get the project with Glory Group?
"We're rich people now, aren't we? The project is worth about 13 million dollars, and there's gonna be cooperation with other companies in other cities. Gosh! Am I dreaming?
"We can get the materials from Rocky, which can also help his business. By the way, I have a high school classmate who also works in construction materials. He approached me recently. See if you can work with him."
She excitedly kept talking in my ear, and I felt a little uncomfortable, so I pulled her hands down.
"Your high school classmate? What's his name? I'll find a chance to meet him."
"His name is Leon West. You were on that business trip for so long. I wanna see you jealous!"
I looked at the bright smile on her small face and was stunned for a second, having the illusion that she had never betrayed me.
She was so good at acting!
I led her to the bed and tentatively reached out my hand to untie the belt of her nightgown.
"Now that you've accepted my gift, time to return the favor."
"No... No!"
She held my hand, panic flashing in her eyes.
"What? You said we were preparing for pregnancy, right? Of course, I've gotta work harder," I said.
I approached her again and looked into her eyes, but the panic I saw a second ago was gone.
"The doctor said we shouldn't have sex while I was on pills."
She was still as cunning as a fox, pushing me away and getting into the bed. I turned off the lights and got into bed, but I didn't hold her in my arms like before.
She didn't come closer, saying that keeping her distance from me would be safer.
It was a long night.
After a long time, maybe she thought I was asleep, she turned her back to me, took her phone, turned down the brightness of the phone's screen, clicked on her chat with someone, and sent someone several messages.
I spent a lot of money to contact a hacker and sent him all the surveillance records at home.
Coincidentally, when I was renovating the place, my friend from childhood recommended hidden surveillance to me. I said OK and then totally forgot about it, and of course, Celeste wouldn't know.
In the following days, Celeste took her medicine on time. Other than that, she acted normal.
The hacker analyzed her phone password and sent it to me.
It was then that I realized that she never let me see her phone after getting married, even when she went to the bathroom or took a shower.
Finally, I took her phone while she was sleeping, but I couldn't find anything suspicious.
Even though I hired someone to investigate, there was nothing. During the time I was away on the business trip, she had three meals with Leon, but there were also other people present. The rest of the time, she only went out shopping or to Paige's house.
Leon was from out of town, and it was easy to find out everything about him. Even my assistant, Eric Mccarthy, asked me if I got Celeste wrong.
But the next day, Eric told me Celeste was meeting Leon at some hotel.
I went there from the company at once. On the way, I received photos of the two of them separating after having a meal together.
Suspicious, I returned home and saw Paige and Rocky.
"Jed, Celeste said that you took on a big project. Help Rocky out, will you? We're family."
Rocky placed the gift on the coffee table politely and said.
"In the future, if I have a profitable business, I'll return the favor."
Looking at Rocky, who was so polite, I suddenly thought of a famous saying.
"When you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."
Apart from the identity of Celeste's cousin, Rocky completely met all the requirements.
I inexplicably remembered the day when the three walked out of the hospital, talking and laughing.
"Jed, hello? What are you thinking? Mom and Rocky are talking to you."
Celeste came in, nudged me, and warmly greeted them to sit down.
