Whispers of Deception Chapter 1

The clinking of glasses, the sound of laughter, and the soft melody of the string quartet filled the grand hall of the Monroe estate. Tonight was supposed to be perfect—our engagement party. I wore the kind of dress little girls dream of, and on my finger was the ring Logan Carter had slipped on just weeks ago.

Logan.

He stood across the room, smiling that charming smile that had won me over years ago. But tonight, something about him felt… distant. His eyes darted to the door, then to his watch.

“Scarlett, darling! What a beautiful couple you two make!” Mrs. Aldridge exclaimed, pulling me into a tight hug. Her perfume was overwhelming, but I smiled anyway. This was what I was used to—putting on a face, playing the part.

“Thank you,” I said softly, glancing back at Logan, who was now deep in conversation with my father.

Something tightened in my chest. Lately, Logan had been busy—too busy. I’d ignored the lingering doubts in my mind, convinced myself that wedding preparations and work stress were the cause. But tonight, as I watched the two most important men in my life whisper in hushed tones, unease crept in.

It wasn’t long before my father led Logan toward his study.

I tried to shake off the heaviness as I smiled and entertained more guests, but the unease only grew. Finally, I excused myself and followed them.

The hallway outside my father’s study was dim, the walls lined with portraits of our family’s long history. I hesitated, but then I heard Logan’s voice—low and tense.

“This isn’t what we agreed on,” he said, his tone sharp.

My brows furrowed.

“You need to stick to the plan,” my father replied, his voice colder than I’d ever heard it.

Plan?

I pressed myself against the wall, my heart hammering as I strained to hear more.

“I’m doing everything I can,” Logan hissed. “But Scarlett—”

“Scarlett doesn’t need to know,” my father cut him off.

I froze. The blood in my veins turned ice-cold. They were talking about me.

The conversation continued, but the words blurred together as panic surged through me. What were they hiding? Why did it sound like Logan wasn’t just my fiancé—he was… involved in something with my father?

A loud clink echoed from inside the study, jolting me out of my thoughts. I stumbled back, my heels clicking against the marble floor.

I needed to get out of there before they found me.

I forced myself to return to the ballroom, to smile and laugh as if nothing had happened. But my mind was a mess, replaying their words over and over again.

Later that night, when the guests had left and the house was quiet, I found myself pacing in Logan’s office. He had stepped out to take a call, leaving his laptop open on the desk.

I hesitated. Logan was private about his work, but tonight, my instincts screamed at me to look.

My hands shook as I moved the mouse and opened a folder labeled “Projects.” At first, it seemed normal—spreadsheets, contracts, financial files. But then I saw it.

A picture of me.

I stared at the image, unable to breathe. It was me as a child, sitting on a swing in our old backyard. But what sent chills down my spine was the label beneath the photo: Project Scarlett.

I scrolled further, my vision blurring as I skimmed through files. There were financial transactions involving my family—numbers that didn’t make sense. The deeper I went, the worse it got.

What was this? And why was Logan keeping it hidden?

“Scarlett?”

I froze.

Logan stood in the doorway, his face unreadable. His eyes flickered to the laptop screen before meeting mine.

“What are you doing?” he asked, his voice low.

My mouth went dry. I tried to speak, but no words came out. His expression darkened, and for the first time, I felt like I didn’t know the man standing before me.

“Why are you going through my files?” Logan stepped closer, his tone calm but laced with something… dangerous.

“I was just…” My voice cracked as I backed away from the desk, my heart pounding.

But Logan didn’t say anything else. He just stared at me, his gaze cold and calculating.

I left the room, my legs shaky as I made my way to my bedroom. Once inside, I locked the door and leaned against it, my breath ragged.

I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the floor as the weight of everything crashed down on me. Logan and my father were hiding something. And whatever it was, it wasn’t good.

But what haunted me most was that photo—the one labeled Project Scarlett.

I wasn’t sure what it meant, but I knew one thing for certain: my life wasn’t as perfect as I thought it was. And tonight, everything started to unravel.
