Claimed by desire in the apocalypse Chapter 1

Elara wiped the sweat from her brow with the back of her gloved hand, her breath steady in the dim corridor of the abandoned hospital.

The building had been empty for years, its walls peeling like old skin, but it still held treasures if you knew where to look. At twenty-four, she had perfected the art of scavenging.

Her backpack already bulged with sealed packets of antibiotics, a few unbroken syringes, and a precious half-bottle of iodine.

She was a lab technician. She checked expiration dates twice, tested seals, and never lingered longer than necessary.

The air smelled of dust and faint decay since the place had been abandoned for a while.

Sunlight filtered weakly through cracked windows high above, casting long shadows across the tiled floor.

She moved toward the pharmacy wing, her boots silent on the debris. A distant rumble outside made her pause, but she dismissed it.

Then the sky ignited.

A brilliant flash tore through the windows, brighter than any lightning she had ever seen.

The solar flare struck, its electromagnetic pulse surging through the city like a silent explosion.

Lights that had somehow survived flickered and died. Elara's flashlight sputtered out in her hand. She froze, heart slamming against her ribs.

Alarms blared from somewhere deep in the building, old emergency systems kicking in before failing completely.

Shouts echoed from other scavengers who had dared enter the ruins with her. Then the screaming started.

She dropped low behind a overturned gurney, peering around its edge.

In the chaos of the hallway ahead, a man named Jax, one of the rough traders who sometimes joined raids clutched his head.

His veins stood out like ropes under his skin. Muscles rippled and swelled across his shoulders and arms, tearing through his worn jacket with audible rips.

His eyes, once sharp with street cunning, turned wild and bloodshot, glowing with fury.

"Jax?" she whispered, but he was already gone.

He lunged at another scavenger, a woman named Mira, slamming her against the wall with bone-crushing force.

Mira's cry cut short as Jax, now something else entirely claimed her right there on the cracked floor, his movements possessive.

Other men nearby convulsed in the same transformation, bodies expanding into bulky strength, faces twisted into masks of rage.

They became Ravagers.

Elara's stomach lurched. She had heard the old stories around campfires.

There was an ancient virus waiting for the right trigger until now. The solar flare had awakened it. Now it spread like wildfire through people in range.

She backed away, boots scraping softly. A Ravager crashed through a nearby door, roaring as he dragged a struggling woman by her hair.

Blood sprayed across the walls. Another pair fought over a fallen scavenger, their snarls mixing with the woman's terrified pleas before one claimed her in a haze.

The hospital, once a place of healing, had become a slaughterhouse.

Elara's mind raced, drawing on every survival instinct she possessed.

She clutched the strap of her backpack and slipped into a side corridor lined with shattered patient rooms.

Glass crunched underfoot. Her breath came in short, controlled bursts. She needed an exit before the virus reached her or the monsters blocked every path.

Heavy footsteps thundered behind her. She glanced back and saw him: a newly turned Ravager, his frame massive, shirt hanging in tatters from shoulders that looked carved from stone.

His eyes locked on her with terrifying focus. Saliva dripped from his bared teeth as he charged.

Elara sprinted, dodging fallen equipment and leaping over bodies. Her lungs burned.

The corridor ended in a dead end near the old emergency stairs, but a metal door to the service tunnels stood slightly ajar.

She slammed into it, shoving it wider, but the Ravager was too fast. His hand clamped onto her shoulder, spinning her around with effortless power.

She hit the wall hard, the impact jarring her spine. Up close, his breath was hot. His fingers dug into her arm like iron bands.

Panic surged through her veins, but something deeper stirred, an unfamiliar heat blooming in her chest, spreading outward like liquid fire.

Without thinking, without understanding, a wave pulsed from her skin. It was invisible, yet she felt it release: a subtle, sweet pheromone that cut through the air between them.

The Ravager's grip loosened. His wild eyes softened for a fraction of a second, confusion flickering across his brutal features. The rage dulled, replaced by a hazy calm that made his movements sluggish.

Elara didn't waste the gift. Her hand found the jagged shard of glass she kept strapped to her thigh.

She drove it upward with all her strength, straight into the soft spot beneath his jaw. Hot blood sprayed across her face and neck. The Ravager gurgled, staggering back, his massive body collapsing in a heap.

She stood there for a heartbeat, staring at what she had done. Her hands trembled. The heat inside her intensified, sharpening her senses.

She could hear the distant crackle of fires outside, smell the copper tang of blood more vividly than ever, and feel every shift in the air currents around her.

Whatever had just awakened inside her, it was Siren blood, the latent mutation her mother had once warned her about in hushed tones before the old world ended.

She had never believed it was real until now.

No time to process. More howls rose from the floors below. She wiped the blood from her eyes and bolted down the service stairs, emerging into the ruined streets.

The city was in full collapse. Columns of smoke rose against a sky still streaked with the flare's afterglow.

Ravagers roamed in packs, their roars echoing between skeletal buildings. Women fled in every direction, some caught and claimed immediately in the open.

Elara ran hard, weaving through alleys she knew by heart. Her body felt lighter, faster, every nerve alive with new power.

She reached the old subway entrance, its grated gate long since pried open by survivors.

She descended the cracked steps into darkness, the cool underground air a brief mercy against her burning skin.

At the bottom, she collapsed against a graffiti-covered wall, chest heaving. The strange heat pulsed through her limbs, heightening every sound and scent.

She could hear water dripping far down the tunnel, the scuttle of rats, and worse, the faint echoes of violence from the surface.

Her mind spun with questions. What was happening to her? How long could she hide this new ability?

She closed her eyes, trying to steady her breathing.

The Siren mutation had saved her life, but at what cost? She touched her neck where the heat felt strongest, feeling the subtle thrum beneath her skin.

Then it came.

Distant howls pierced the underground silence... getting close... closer, and growing louder with every passing second.
