Three months into my pregnancy, I was resting at home to ensure the baby’s health when a typhoon struck. My husband, Adam Quinn, received a call and rushed out to meet his childhood sweetheart.
As a result, I experienced severe abdominal pain. The ambulance taking me to the hospital was involved in an accident, and I lost the baby. Adam arrived much later, only to blame me, saying, "Mona Thomas, why are you so useless? You couldn’t even keep the baby!"
The typhoon raged, accompanied by torrential rain.
In the middle of the night, Adam Quinn answered a call, his expression darkening. "Wait for me, I'll be right there!"
Who else could make him rush out in this weather without hesitation other than Judy Clark?
I grabbed his hand. "Don’t go, I’m scared!"
I was three months pregnant and showed signs of a threatened miscarriage, so the doctor had advised me to rest at home.
However, Adam looked irritated. "Judy’s caught a cold. Can’t you be a little more understanding?"
He shook off my hand and slammed the door behind him. His urgency left me in stunned silence.
We’d been married for two years, and I was three months pregnant. By the time I learned about Judy, Adam and I were already engaged.
At the time, he was honest with me, saying Judy had been his neighbor, someone he’d grown up with.
At the time, I didn't dwell on it much, assuming that childhood sweethearts not ending up together was a clear sign of a missing spark.
But I was wrong.
Whenever Judy called, no matter where Adam was or what he was doing, he would drop everything and rush to her.
I used to argue with him about it, but Adam would only say, "Mona, why are you so petty? Judy’s alone; of course, I need to help her! I love you, not her. Don’t worry about it."
Later, when we got married, Judy even bought a house in our neighborhood.
And now, just because she had a cold, Adam could leave his pregnant wife and go out in the middle of the night.
I couldn’t help but laugh bitterly and shook my head. If he wanted to go, then let him go.
I tried to go back to sleep, but the howling wind outside made my heart pound anxiously. Occasionally, the sound of car alarms pierced through the storm.
It seemed yet another tree had been uprooted. I couldn’t help but wonder which stubborn soul had left their car parked outside in such weather.
At that moment, a loud crash came from the living room, followed by the sound of shattering glass. My heart skipped a beat!
Trembling, I opened the door. The entire house was pitch black; the power was out.
A gust of wind tore through the space, and I froze in disbelief—the window was gone!
I distinctly remembered asking Adam to secure it!
Panicked, I retreated to the bedroom and grabbed my phone to call Adam, but no one answered.
I didn’t dare step outside, so I curled up in a corner, hugging myself tightly.
It took forever, but dawn finally arrived. Wiping the sweat from my forehead, I tried to stand, only to feel a dull ache in my belly. Heading to the bathroom, I froze in shock.
There was blood!
To make matters worse, the water was out too!
Fear gripped me. At three months, my pregnancy was still unstable. I needed to get to the hospital immediately.
I quickly dialed Adam’s number again. After ringing for what felt like forever, the call was finally answered.
Judy’s voice greeted me. "Oh, it’s you, Mona. Adam stayed with me all night and just fell asleep. Do you need something?"
"Can you wake him? I need to talk to him."
"Oh, Adam’s exhausted. If it’s not urgent, maybe let him rest a bit longer?"
My heart sank.
“Adam, you’re unbelievable,” I thought.
Glancing outside, I took a few photos of the wreckage and sent them to Adam.
I called for an ambulance. In this situation, I couldn’t afford to take any risks.
Thankfully, the ambulance arrived quickly and took me to the hospital.
However, just as we crossed an intersection, a powerful gust of wind caused the vehicle to sway uncontrollably, slamming it into a roadside flower bed. I was thrown hard against the interior, and a sharp pain tore through my belly.
“The pregnant woman is bleeding! Hang in there!”
My vision blurred, and I grasped the nurse’s arm desperately. “Call Adam Quinn! He’s my husband!”
The nurse found the contact labeled "Husband" in my phone and dialed. But the person who answered was a woman.
"Mona, Adam is already asleep. Whatever it is, just wait until tomorrow!"
Before I could say anything, she hung up.
A wave of despair washed over me, and tears rolled uncontrollably down my face.
The nurse looked a bit uncomfortable but quickly tried to comfort me. “Please stay strong. Your baby needs you!”
By the time I was rushed to the hospital, forty minutes had passed, and it was clear the baby was gone.
After an emergency surgery, I was wheeled out of the operating room at four in the morning. No one from my family had been reached.
My parents were traveling and stranded by grounded flights due to the typhoon. I hadn’t wanted to trouble them anyway—they were getting older and couldn’t handle this kind of shock.
Left with no choice, I called Adam’s parents. I told them Adam had been with Judy, while I was home alone, miscarried, and now hospitalized, unable to contact him.
Why should I bear this pain alone? Adam should face it with me.
Hearing my story, my in-laws were immediately alarmed. I wasn’t sure how they relayed the news to Adam, but they showed up at the hospital by six in the morning.
Adam, on the other hand, didn’t arrive until ten—and he brought Judy with him.
The moment he saw me, his expression was full of displeasure. "What happened? How could you not even manage to keep the baby while home alone?"
Before he could say another word, my mother-in-law’s fury erupted. She slapped him hard across the face.
"You knew her pregnancy was unstable, and the doctor told her to stay home and rest. Where were you last night? If you’d been here, this wouldn’t have happened!"
At that, Judy timidly stepped forward. "Ma’am, it’s all my fault. I wasn’t feeling well last night, and my house water supply was cut, so I asked Adam to come over. If you’re upset, blame me."
Smack!
My mother-in-law turned and slapped Judy as well.
"Judy Clark, don’t you have a family of your own? In the middle of a storm like that, you had the nerve to call my son to fetch water and look after you, while his pregnant wife was left home alone and ended up in the hospital!"
Judy burst into tears immediately. "I didn’t mean for this to happen! How could I have known?"
"Get out! And stay away from my son from now on!"
Judy stomped her foot, clutching her face as she sobbed and ran out of the room.
"Judy!"
Adam instinctively tried to follow her, but my father-in-law grabbed his arm. "If you dare walk out that door, I’ll break your legs myself!"
Adam froze, forced to stay put.
For the first time since the night before, I felt a faint sense of vindication.
However, I could see that Adam still looked completely dejected.
Meanwhile, my in-laws took charge, pulling him aside. "Go ask the doctor about her condition and pick up some food and drinks while you're at it!"
“I’ll handle the bill,” my mother-in-law added, turning to my father-in-law. “And you, go get a bottle of hot water!”
She then looked at me. “Mona, stay here and rest. I’ll be back shortly.”
I nodded, feeling a slight sense of comfort. At least there were still reasonable people in this family.
In truth, my in-laws had been eagerly waiting for this child for a long time. I’d struggled to conceive, and after finally getting my body back on track and successfully becoming pregnant, we faced complications almost immediately.
Now, having just lost the baby, I felt no hope left in my heart.
Clutching my belly, I thought about how, just hours ago, there had been a baby connected to me by blood right here.
And now, it was gone.
Adam, how could you say something so cruel to me?
I realized I needed to seriously reevaluate this marriage.
I waited for half an hour, but no one came back.
Even though Adam had something urgent to do, or my mother-in-law got held up, surely it wouldn’t take my father-in-law this long just to get some hot water.
Struggling to get up, I realized that while I was weak from the surgery, I wasn’t completely immobile.
Clutching my belly, I slowly shuffled to the door. At the end of the hallway, near the corner, I spotted a familiar figure. Wasn’t that my mother-in-law in her floral dress?
I moved closer, ready to call out to her, but stopped short when I overheard her speaking.
"You promised me you wouldn’t have anything more to do with her, didn’t you? Just because she calls you ‘darling,’ you completely lose your mind! And now look at the mess you've made. Mona’s parents are going to have plenty to say about this!”
Her tone turned angrier. "Honestly, Mona’s health is just too poor. We didn’t agree to your marriage in the first place, but you insisted. Fine, you married her—and now you don’t even cherish her! You couldn’t even protect her long enough to keep the baby!
“Adam Quinn, let me tell you this: if it happens again, don’t blame me for stepping in! You’ve been married all this time without a child, and if this keeps up, you’d better end things with her sooner rather than later!"
Adam responded impatiently, "I know, alright? This time, it’s my fault. I’ll be more careful."
Clenching my fists tightly, I wiped away my tears and quietly returned to my room.
Just as I had lain down, my parents walked in. Seeing how flustered they were, my eyes immediately turned red with emotion. "Mom, why are you here?"
"We couldn’t reach you on the phone, and when we heard there was a typhoon, along with reports of power and water outages, we got worried and rushed back overnight. We’d just arrived when we got a call from your mother-in-law, saying you’d been in an accident.
"Thank goodness my precious daughter is safe and sound!"
Hearing my mom’s comforting words and seeing their anxious expressions, I could no longer hold back. I threw myself into their arms and burst into tears.
"Mom!"
My mom patted my back gently, trying to soothe me. "It’s alright, sweetie. Take care of yourself. You're still young; you'll have other opportunities to have a child.”
However, my dad frowned deeply. "How could their family leave you alone like this? And where is Adam?"
Sniffling, I remembered the conversation I’d overheard earlier. I told them everything that had happened.
My dad was livid. He rolled up his sleeves, ready to storm off. "That little brat! I’m not letting him get away with this!"
My mom quickly stopped him. "Calm down! Don’t act so rashly!"
"Rashly? My daughter has suffered so much, and that brat still dares to treat her like this? I’ll make him pay for it!"
"Dealing with him is one thing," my mom said firmly. "Right now, we need to think about how to handle this situation properly. Mona, what do you want to do?"
My dad turned to look at me, his anger simmering just beneath the surface.
I took a deep breath, steadying my emotions.
After a moment of thought, I shook my head. "I don’t want to stay with him anymore."
Initially, I thought my in-laws were decent people, but after overhearing their conversation, I realized they never truly respected me.
If that was the case, there was nothing worth holding onto.
Hearing my decision, my dad nodded firmly. "Alright. Once you’ve recovered, we’ll file for divorce. There are plenty of men in this world. My daughter doesn’t need to put up with this kind of treatment!"
Just as he finished speaking, Adam and his family walked in.
When Adam saw my parents, he froze for a moment. "Dad, Mom, you're here."
"Don’t call us that," my dad replied curtly.
Adam was immediately at a loss for words. Realizing he was in the wrong, he lowered his head and apologized. "It’s my fault. I was wrong."
"Who are we to accept your apology?"
My mom took the food from Adam and placed it on the bedside table.
Then she turned to him and said, "You can leave now. You’ve spent plenty of time with your precious childhood sweetheart. You two clearly have feelings for each other. Go back and make it up to her. Once my daughter is discharged, she’s filing for divorce."
This statement instantly set my mother-in-law off. "What kind of talk is that? These kids are doing just fine! It’s nothing serious! It’s because Mona’s health is too poor. Otherwise…”
"You’re blaming my daughter’s health? Why not blame your son’s shortcomings?" my mom snapped, raising her voice.
"What kind of husband leaves his pregnant wife in the middle of the night, knowing she’s at risk of a miscarriage, to take care of another woman? Go on, explain what kind of family values taught him that!"
The hospital room door was wide open, and suddenly curious onlookers from nearby rooms all poked their heads out to watch.
Adam’s face turned pale with embarrassment.
My mom had once been a local council leader, and her commanding voice was as sharp and authoritative as ever. She laid everything out with crystal-clear logic, leaving no room for Adam to refute, while airing all his dirty laundry for everyone to hear.
Panicked, my mother-in-law immediately tried to appease her. "Please, have mercy. Give us some grace. I really didn’t expect this boy to pull such a ridiculous stunt. I already slapped him, see?"
Sure enough, there was a handprint on Adam’s face.
My dad scoffed coldly. "And he deserved every bit of it. My daughter doesn’t need to see any of you for the next few days. Every time she looks at you, her anger flares up. Don’t affect her recovery with your presence."
Adam’s face turned dark, and he couldn’t muster a word in front of my parents. It seemed he finally realized how badly he had messed up.
Later, he texted me, apologizing and admitting his mistakes.
I didn’t bother to reply.
Instead, I reached out to a trusted lawyer friend, asking them to handle everything regarding the divorce.
I wanted a clean break.
Since he clearly couldn’t let go of her, I would step aside.
There was no need to stay where I wasn’t respected.
But Judy didn’t sit still. The very next day, she came to provoke me.
"Mona, I know it’s hard losing a baby," she said with feigned concern. "Take care of yourself, okay? After all, now that the baby’s gone, Adam won’t want you anymore. Why not step aside and stop holding onto something that’s not yours?"
Her words made my blood boil. Furious, I slapped her hard across the face.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she whimpered, "Mona!"
Adam burst into the room at that moment. "Mona! That’s too much! She came here out of kindness, and you hit her? If you’re angry, take it out on me!"
"Fine. I’ll take it out on you right now!"
