Chapter 5

"Black Rose is returning."

The words hit the internet at 9 AM on a Tuesday. I saw them on my phone in the gym at Massimo's compound. Every outlet. Every platform. Same image, a silhouette in the black suit. Same text in white.

I read it three times. Then I put the phone down and finished my set.

Massimo had promised a blitz. He had delivered.

By noon, it was trending worldwide. By dinner, every news show was talking about it. Racing journalists posted think pieces. Fans fought in comment sections. "She's back." "It's a hoax." "Who is it?"

Desmond saw it too. I didn't have to be in the room to know. It was all over his world.

I found out later, from a clip someone posted, that he was at his training facility with Layne when the notification hit his phone. He laughed.

"Whoever it is," he said, "they're not lasting five laps against me."

Layne laughed and refilled his glass.

I saved the clip. I don't know why. Maybe for the file. Maybe just to remember the moment.

---

The reception was in the paddock at the Circuit of the Americas. Two nights before the race. Big room. Big names. Everyone in racing was there. Sponsors, drivers, owners. Champagne and handshakes.

Desmond had a sponsorship thing, so I had to come. Standing next to him in a dress that was supposed to make me look small. Easy to overlook.

I'd brought the gloves in my clutch. I don't know exactly when I decided. Somewhere between the media announcement and the drive to the track. I just knew I didn't want to be invisible anymore. Not for one more night.

Desmond was talking to a group. I stepped away, quiet, and slipped the gloves on. Black leather. Snug. The familiar weight.

It took Layne about ten seconds to notice.

"Oh my God." Her voice cut across the conversation like a blade. The whole group turned. "Are those *Black Rose* gloves?"

She brought her hand to her mouth, eyes wide, the theatrical gasp perfected over years. "That is *adorable*. Are we cosplaying now?"

The mechanics snickered. One of them nearly spat out his champagne.

Desmond's racing friends howled. A guy I'd met twice, a teammate of his, slapped Desmond on the shoulder.

"Your wife thinks she's the GOAT, bro."

Everyone laughed. It was a good joke. The housewife, pretending to be the legend. I watched them through the eyes of the woman I used to be.

Desmond's face was red. Embarrassment, sharp and ugly, pulled at his jaw. He grabbed my arm.

"Stop making a scene."

I looked down at his hand on my wrist. Then up at his face.

"I'm not making a scene," I said. "I'm asking you a question."

The group went quiet. Not fully. But the edges drifted toward me.

I pulled my arm free. Easy. Calm.

"Race day," I said, loud enough for the whole room to hear. "If I prove I'm Black Rose, you sign the divorce papers. Right here. No assets. No negotiation. Nothing."

Desmond stared at me. The laughter died.

"You're serious?" he said.

"The papers are already drafted. Your signature is the only thing missing."

He looked around at his crew. His friends. His sponsors. They were watching him. Waiting.

A smile crept across his face. Slow and ugly.

"Fine," he said. He held out his hand. "On race day. You prove it. I sign."

I took his hand. His grip was hard, meant to hurt. I matched it.

Someone's phone was already recording. I saw the screen, the little red dot, from the corner of my eye.

"Let's make sure everyone heard that," I said, loud and even.

The room was silent.

Desmond pulled his hand back. He laughed, a short ugly sound. "Sure. Everyone heard."

He turned and walked away. Layne followed, her heels clicking against the floor, her hand already on his arm.

I stood alone in the middle of the room, in a dress that made me look small, wearing the gloves that made me feel real.

The recording was done. I knew it would be everywhere by morning.

Massimo appeared at my elbow. I hadn't seen him arrive.

"You sure about this?" he asked quietly.

"I've been sure for seven years," I said. "I just forgot how to say it."
