Chapter 5

The news came through Silvercrest's intelligence network three days after the war council meeting.

I was in the archive room with Alaina when Caden arrived. He knocked once, then entered, his expression carefully neutral.

"Intelligence confirmation," he said, handing me a sealed report. "The rogue leak at Ironveil. It's originating from inside the Alpha quarters."

I broke the seal. The report was precise. Patrol schedules. Ward vulnerabilities. Settlement locations. All information that had passed through Bradley's chambers in the weeks since I left.

All information Alyssa had access to.

I set the report on the table. My hands were steady.

Caden watched me. "Do you want us to act on this?"

"No," I said quietly. "Not yet."

He nodded once and left.

Alaina picked up the report. She read it slowly, her healer's precision evident in the way her eyes tracked each line.

"She's feeding intelligence to someone," Alaina said. "The question is who."

"Jalen Ruiz," I said. "The rogue who fathered her pup."

Alaina looked up sharply. "You're certain?"

I pressed my palm against the scar on my ribs. "I overheard them once. Before the ceremony. I didn't understand what I was hearing at the time."

Alaina set the report down. Her expression shifted into something harder. Clinical.

"Then we build the case," she said.

We spent the next four hours in the archive room. Alaina pulled Council records on known rogue herbalists. Chemical compound documentation. Scent-suppressant profiles.

She cross-referenced everything against the timeline of Bradley and Alyssa's bond.

"Here," she said finally, spreading three documents across the table. "This suppressant compound. It mimics fated-mate pheromones. Rare. Expensive. And it has a signature degradation pattern."

She pointed to a chart. "After marking, the artificial scent breaks down over weeks. The bond-holder starts smelling something else. Usually earth. Stale."

I stared at the chart. "Bradley would have noticed."

"He did," Alaina said quietly. "But by then the mark was already made. He couldn't undo it."

She pulled another document forward. "And this. Jalen Ruiz. Known for manufacturing this exact compound. Council has him flagged in three territories."

I looked at the file building in front of us. Evidence. Documentation. The chemical proof of what Alyssa had done.

What Bradley had believed was real.

"This is fraud," Alaina said. Her voice was calm. Factual. "What she did to Bradley is what Bradley did to the bond itself. Manufactured. Transactional."

I nodded slowly. I felt nothing. No satisfaction. No vindication. Just the cold weight of facts assembling themselves into consequence.

"We keep building," I said. "When the Council convenes, we'll have everything they need."

Alaina gathered the documents. "Agreed."

---

Ironveil was collapsing faster now.

The reports came through Silvercrest's network daily. Three families defected to the Ashwood Pack. Five warriors requested transfer to neutral territory. Bradley's Gamma was wounded in a rogue raid on the western perimeter and couldn't shift for weeks.

A delegation of senior pack members formally petitioned Bradley for outside assistance.

He dismissed them.

More than that—he issued a pack-wide order forbidding any communication with other territories without his direct authorization.

Simone read me the report over breakfast. She didn't comment. She didn't need to.

"He's sealing himself in," I said quietly.

Simone nodded. "And taking everyone with him."

I thought about Petra Hale. The wolfless Omega who used to clean the pack house. Who witnessed the miscarriage. Who never said a word.

I wondered if she was still there.

I wondered how many others like her were trapped inside a territory that was eating itself.

---

The tremors came again that night.

I'd gone for a run along Silvercrest's northern border. Alone. The moon was high and the air was cold and I needed to move.

I was a mile from the compound when it hit.

Pressure. Sudden and absolute. Behind my sternum. Radiating outward.

I dropped to my knees.

My bones cracked. Audible. Sharp. Heat erupted through my skin in waves. My hands pressed into the dirt and I felt my fingers elongate, claws breaking through.

I was shifting.

But it didn't complete.

The wolf surged forward—closer than it had ever been—then pulled back. I gasped. My body convulsed. I shifted back to human form within minutes, shaking, my skin slick with sweat.

But something was different.

Inside my mind, there was a presence.

Not a voice. Not yet. But warmth. A waiting.

Something alive.

I knelt there in the dirt, breathing hard, my hands trembling.

For the first time in over a decade, I was not alone inside my own body.

I ran back to the compound. My legs felt unsteady. The tremors hadn't stopped—they'd just changed rhythm.

Alaina was awake when I reached the healer's quarters. She was sitting at her desk, as though she'd been waiting.

I stood in the doorway. My chest was heaving. My hands were still shaking.

"It's closer," I said.

Alaina looked at me. Her expression was calm. Certain.

"I know," she said.

She stood and crossed to me. She touched my wrist. Her fingers were warm and steady.

"Don't fight it when it comes," she said quietly. "It has been waiting longer than you know."

I nodded. I couldn't speak.

Alaina guided me to a chair. She brought water. She sat across from me and waited until my breathing slowed.

"How long?" I asked finally.

Alaina's gaze was steady. "Days. Maybe less."

I pressed my palm against the scar on my ribs. The warmth inside me pulsed. Alive. Waiting.

"What do I do until then?" I asked.

Alaina reached across and covered my hand with hers.

"You survive," she said. "And when she comes, you let her."

I sat there in the quiet healer's quarters, feeling the presence inside me grow stronger with every breath.

The cage was cracking.

And whatever had been locked inside for over a decade was finally waking up.
