Chapter 2

But now, I didn't care anymore.

"Damon, let's get a divorce," I enunciated.

Damon looked as though he had heard the biggest joke of his life. He mocked me, "Divorce? Suzanne, is that what you want? Remember, you don't have a job right now. If we divorce, custody of Glenda will go to me."

The mention of Glenda stabbed at my nerves, causing every cell in my body to scream in pain.

Turning around, I retrieved my ID and marriage certificate from the cabinet. "Let's go. The City Hall hasn't closed yet. We can get our divorce now."

He looked at the documents in my hand and scoffed, "Come on. Stop bluffing."

I remained silent.

He began to lose his cool. "Are you serious?"

My eyes turned red. "Damon, all these years, you've been busy with work, never celebrating our anniversaries or spending time with Glenda. I know your job is demanding, with patients always coming first."

"Be honest with me. Did you really have an emergency surgery when you left us at the gas station the other day?"

Damon was surprised. After a moment of silence, he said, "I'm sorry. It was my fault. I promise I won't ever leave you behind like that again. Whenever you need me, I'll be there as soon as possible."

"Damon, not every apology deserves forgiveness," I said with tears welling up in my eyes. "I won't forgive you."

Before Damon could say anything else, his phone rang suddenly. He answered the call and hurriedly left.

The ringtone was Alicia's new song.

I felt disgusted beyond words. As I began to gather my things to leave, my phone rang.

"Ms. Hale, could you come to the cemetery? Your daughter's grave has been dug up. The police are on their way."

I hung up and rushed to the cemetery in a panic.

*****

The cemetery staff immediately led me over, apologizing profusely. "Ms. Hale, we're so sorry. She said she wanted to see the grave, so we took her there. We didn't expect her to order someone to dig.

"The police have arrived and have restrained them, waiting for you to come."

I followed the staff quickly, and from a distance, I saw two familiar figures.

One of them was Alicia, and the person holding her was Damon.

If it weren't for her, Damon wouldn't have let me and Glenda get out of the car. Even if Glenda had a sudden heart attack, she could have been promptly taken to the hospital. And now, she was trying to dig up my daughter's grave.

Hatred made me tremble with anger. I stepped forward and pulled Alicia out of Damon's embrace, slapping her hard across the face.

I was not satisfied and was about to slap her again when Damon grabbed my wrist, pushing me to the ground. "Suzanne! What are you doing here? And why do you slap her?"

I struggled to get up from the ground, attempting to fight Damon, but the police intervened and separated us.

Alicia came to her senses, covering her face and collapsing into Damon's arms. "Damon, my eyes..."

Damon felt distressed and hugged Alicia to comfort her. "Don't cry. You just had your stitches removed. You can't cry now. It's okay. I will take care of everything."

Chapter 3

Damon glared at me with disgust. "You crazy woman!"

I looked at him coldly and spat, "You adulterer!"

Damon was furious. "You're impossible!"

People around us looked on with curiosity. Alicia finally raised her head, looking aggrieved. "Suzanne, it's not what you think. After I came back, I had to stay in the hospital due to eye problems. I don't have many friends here, so I asked Damon to take care of me. Half a month ago, Star was not doing well, so I asked Damon to go back and check. But yesterday, Star passed away, so I came here to find a burial place. I liked this one, but they stopped and tried to drive me away. I had no choice but to ask Damon to come."

Star was a chinchilla they raised together.

I felt absurd. Damon indirectly caused the death of his daughter while caring for a chinchilla.

"So, you know each other?" The policeman was incredulous after hearing Alicia's explanation. Seeing me nod, he released both of us.

Alicia looked at Damon with a grievance. "Damon, can you accompany me to the hospital? I'm afraid..."

Damon comforted her, patting her head gently. "Don't worry. As I said, the surgery was successful, done by me in person. There won't be any problems, and you will recover soon."

In the back of my mind, I caught a keyword. "Surgery? What surgery?"

"Half a month ago, I had a corneal transplant surgery, so my eyes will be normal again." Alicia looked at Damon happily. "All thanks to Damon. He came to see Star and coincidentally found me. He helped me with many things and performed the surgery himself.

"You were lucky. The donor passed away at our hospital. We had the priority." Damon patted her back, looking quite happy.

Half a month ago, donor, corneal transplant...

It was Glenda.

I pieced together the fragments and got an absurd puzzle.

Glenda's corneas were transplanted by Damon into Alicia.

Our daughter died, and her father was celebrating the luck of his first love.

My mind buzzed, filled with intense, undiluted hatred.

I stepped forward and slapped Damon hard. "Damon, you're a beast!"

The policeman, fearing I would make things tense, pulled me away and said, "Ms. Hale, since the incident has happened and you know each other, let's see how we can resolve this?"

Damon finally understood that I was not there because of him. "Did you buy this cemetery plot? Why did you buy it?"

The cemetery staff nearby knew the reason and looked at him with confusion. "Mr. Wagner, are you and Ms. Hale close?" If so, he should know whom I bought this plot for.

Damon replied calmly, "Thank you for your hard work. This is a misunderstanding. This lady is my wife."

The policeman and cemetery staff stared at me in astonishment.

At that moment, I regretted not divorcing him earlier.

I said coldly, "I don't know this lady who's meddling with my cemetery plot. And I don't accept mediation. I will sue her for malicious destruction of property, and she will face the legal consequences."

"Suzanne! What do you mean?" Damon snapped.

I sneered, "What? Feeling sorry for her? But it's okay. If you bow to me 99 times with her, I may relent and consider not suing her."

"Suzanne!" Damon sensed my strong emotions. "Why did you buy this cemetery plot? And arranging it like this... Are you preparing it for Glenda? As I said, I've found the best expert for her. Glenda will recover soon, and this is not needed. What's wrong with leaving this place to Star?"

I burst into laughter, tears streaming down uncontrollably.

Our daughter's body was donated, so this was just a shroud mound. I didn't put up her photo, and I wanted to make this place a small garden, where the visitors would not just mourn but also smile, remembering how lovely Glenda was.

Star and Glenda. How ridiculous! They even sounded alike.

Yet Damon felt his daughter should make way for a chinchilla.

I spoke calmly. "Sorry, officer, we'll handle this matter ourselves. You don't need to bother."

After the police left, I picked up my daughter's urn.

Inside was a porcelain doll Glenda had made herself. She liked it and always kept it by her bedside. She said this doll could accompany me while she was at kindergarten.

I carefully wiped off the dirt from its surface when Alicia spoke up. "Suzanne, name your price. I hope you can give up this plot."

I replied coldly, "You can forget about it. I won't give this to you. The police have taken photos, and I will pursue this to the end. Now, please take that beast to leave. Don't dirty this place any further."

Damon spoke up for her. "Suzanne! Don't go too far!"

"Damon, if you want to grovel, do it on your own. Don't try to drag me down with you. If you're not disgusted, I am!

"Tomorrow we'll go to the City Hall and get a divorce."

"Don't even think about it!" Damon was furious. As I passed by him, he struck the urn heavily with his fist.

He put all his strength into that punch, causing the urn to fall to the ground.

The lid flew off, and the porcelain doll inside shattered into pieces, mingling with the soil.

"Ah!" I screamed in despair, grabbing the empty urn and smashing it hard against Damon. Then I knelt on the ground, trembling as I tried to gather the fragments and piece the doll back together.

Damon recognized the doll. His heart clenched, and he shouted in anguish, "How is this doll here? Where is Glenda? Did something happen to her?"

He frantically searched for his phone, trembling as he called Glenda's attending doctor who was also his friend.

"Glenda had a sudden heart attack and passed away half a month ago!"

"Impossible!"

"I thought you knew. After all..." Damon's friend hesitated for a moment before continuing, "The day Glenda passed away, you were at the hospital. Glenda donated her organs, and one of her corneas went to Alicia. You performed the surgery."
