An explosion took my hearing the day I saved my fiancé, Marco Falcone.
But at our engagement party, he announced he was in love with my sister, Isabella.
Even my own parents told me to step aside.
Then he stepped in. Dante Falcone. The Don.
My ex-fiancé's powerful uncle.
He offered me marriage. Protection. A new life.
He said he’d loved me for a decade. I believed him.
Five years later, a miracle. My hearing returned.
I raced to my husband's study to tell him. But I stopped at the door.
I overheard a conversation between him and his consigliere.
"Once I've cleared all the obstacles for Isabella, I'll give her the entire East Coast shipping business."
His consigliere chuckled. "The Donna would be heartbroken if she knew you only married her to keep her from harassing Marco and ruining Isabella's happiness."
"She's deaf. She can't hear."
My eyes burned, and my hands trembled at my sides, clenching into fists.
So that was it. Five years of marriage, of feeling protected—all a carefully crafted lie for another woman.
There was nothing left for me in this gilded cage.
It was time to disappear from his world forever.

The doctor confirmed it: my hearing was fully restored.
I rushed back to the Falcone estate, my heart hammering against my ribs. I couldn't wait to tell Dante, to finally hear my husband's voice.
But as I neared his study, a cold, masculine voice drifted from the slightly ajar door.
"Once Isabella's child is born, I'll hand over the Las Vegas casinos to him. That way, she'll be secure for the rest of her life."
I peered through the crack to see Dante on the sofa with his Consigliere, Luca. I recognized the voice instantly. It was Dante.
Then, Luca spoke, a hint of concern in his tone.
"Don, if you give away the most profitable casinos, what about the Donna? She's a Principessa of the Ricci family. Are you planning to let her face hardship with you?"
Dante dismissed the concern, a flicker of obsession in his eyes.
"Isabella didn't choose me back then, so I lost the chance to protect her for a lifetime. Now, I'll give her my wealth so she knows I'll always have her back. As for Elena..."
His voice trailed off, laced with a subtle annoyance.
"I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to her. Besides, she loves me. She'd give me anything. It's a slight dip in our lifestyle, not ruin. She won't complain."
Luca sighed, a note of resignation in his voice.
"Don, you've spent your life hung up on Isabella. The Donna would be heartbroken if she knew you didn't marry her for love, but to keep her from... ruining Isabella's happiness with Marco."
The words were bullets, each one finding its mark in my chest.
The sharp pain sent an involuntary tremor through my entire body.
Luca was about to say more when he saw me at the door. His face tensed.
"Donna... you're back."
Dante’s gaze followed, and a flash of panic crossed his eyes before being swiftly masked by his usual indifference.
He shot Luca a look, his voice chilling.
"What are you panicking for? She's deaf. You could shout in her ear, and she wouldn't hear a thing."
At Dante's cynical words, Luca relaxed. He stood, bowed to me, and greeted me in sign language.
Dante also strode over, draping a cashmere shawl across my shoulders. His eyes held their usual pity as he signed to me.
"Why did you run out so lightly dressed? You'll catch a chill."
Dante hadn't known sign language at first. After we married, he hired a tutor to communicate with me "without barriers." He'd stayed up all night practicing, even becoming ill from exhaustion.
I'd once wept, begging him to rest, but he had only ever gently brushed my tears away.
"You've suffered so much in your silent world. I want to be the only one who can enter it."
My heart had swelled with emotion.
He was the only one who had ever bothered to try for me. Not even Marco, the man I had saved, had ever considered learning. My own parents certainly wouldn't; they only had eyes for Isabella.
But now, watching his fluent signs, the irony was crushing.
He used the most tender gestures to show his care, all while exploiting my deafness to plot his devotion to another woman right in front of my face.
Then, he signed again.
"Elena, Isabella's birthday party is about to start. We should get going. If we're late, your parents will be upset."
Dante's eyes were bright with an anticipation that wasn't for me. It was for her. Isabella.
A dull ache throbbed in my chest. I pulled my hand from his, struggling to keep my composure.
"Wait for me. I'm going to change."
With that, I hurried upstairs, terrified the tears would spill over if I stayed a second longer.
After changing, I walked back downstairs, passing his study. The door was ajar.
Inside was the safe he never let me touch, claiming it held the family's most guarded secrets.
Now, a powerful compulsion drew me in.
Stepping into the study and opening the safe, I felt like the world's biggest fool.
There were no secret documents.
The safe wasn't filled with papers. It was a shrine to Isabella, filled with photos from her childhood to the day she became Marco's wife. Her every laugh, every tear, every fleeting expression.
But of me, his wife, there was nothing.
In five years of marriage, Dante had spent most of his time in this study. The warmth in my heart turned to ice.
So this was him "handling family affairs"—staring at another woman's photos, pining for her.
Deeper inside, I found a draft of a letter of intent for the casino transfer. The beneficiary was listed as Isabella's future child.
This casino was the Falcone's crown jewel, the business Dante had poured his soul into. And he was giving it away to her child, while I, his wife, had never even heard him mention it.
Next to it was a stack of confidential files.
The one on top read: "List of Rivals to be Eliminated for Isabella." Nearly every name was marked "completed."
For Isabella, Dante had sacrificed everything, even using his own marriage as a pawn in his game.
A profound coldness settled in my soul. The last ember of hope I held for Dante sputtered and died.
When we arrived at my family's estate, the party was in full swing.
Isabella, the birthday girl, was breathtaking in an haute couture gown, her makeup flawless.
My parents hovered by her side, their gazes never leaving her, as if she were a priceless jewel.
They used to look at me that way.
Until ten years ago, when the long-lost Isabella was found.
She had hidden in our mother's arms, pointed a trembling finger at me, and whispered, "Elena... why did you leave me alone in that warehouse?"
That one sentence was all it took. Everyone believed I had arranged her kidnapping out of jealousy.
From that day on, I was the family's shame, a disgrace in my parents' eyes.
Seeing Dante and me approach, Isabella glided over, her smile radiant.
"Elena, Dante, you're finally here! I was starting to think you weren't coming."
Then, she covered her mouth in a show of feigned regret.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, Elena. I forgot you can't hear. I should be signing. But I don't know how... You won't hold it against me, will you?"
My mother, who had followed her, snorted coldly. "If it weren't for her, you wouldn't have suffered so much. What right does she have to blame you? That deaf girl. She's a disgrace to the Ricci name."
My father said nothing, but his disdainful glare spoke volumes.
I had long grown numb to their blatant favoritism, but it still stung.
"She's not that petty. You don't need to apologize," Dante stepped in to soothe Isabella, presenting her with a carefully wrapped gift.
"Isabella, happy birthday."
Isabella accepted it with a dazzling smile.
But the moment she opened the box, I felt like I’d been plunged into an icy abyss.
It was the Black Swan diamond pendant.
The heirloom of the Falcone matriarch, passed down by every Don to his one true love.
Only the Don's wife was worthy of wearing it.
I had once asked Dante why he hadn't given it to me. He’d looked troubled, telling me it was lost during a family feud. He'd said it was just a material thing, that his heart was all that mattered.
Now, it was clear. All of it, a lie.
The heirloom wasn't lost. He had saved it for Isabella.
Because Isabella was the one true woman in his heart.
My heart felt as if it were being carved by a dull blade, the pain so sharp I could hardly draw a breath.
The room felt suffocating. I made an excuse and slipped out to the pool in the backyard.
I never expected Isabella to follow me.
