Lord Roger was furious upon hearing Malcolm’s report and only then realized that their quarry had successfully escaped their pursuit. He ordered Malcolm and Mrs. Leony to rush towards the basement door. In an instant, the door shattered as they leaped inside, searching for their prey. Much to their surprise, they encountered another door that needed to be opened.
“So they escaped through this door,” Lord Roger growled.
“Yes, I agree with your assessment, dear,” Mrs. Brenda replied, looking at her husband.
“Let’s open this door,” Malcolm invited.
Malcolm attempted to open the door leading to the tunnel but encountered difficulty. Shortly after, the head of the household began to exert his strength and succeeded. The door swung open on its own, revealing a long and dark tunnel before them. All four of them leaped inside and ran swiftly until they reached the Sotana forest, located near the Cambrian mountain border. They managed to pass through the forest, but as they attempted to leap over the border, they were repelled by a tremendous force.
“Argh!!!” their voices echoed in frustration.
“Why is this happening!” Lord Roger exclaimed.
“My body is in so much pain,” Mrs. Brenda groaned in agony.
“My legs are injured too,” Mrs. Leony added, groaning.
“It seems there’s some force attacking us,” Malcolm speculated.
They began to investigate the cause and were shocked to find, just a few meters away, numerous Wolf’s Bane plants, known enemies of werewolves.
“Oh my, so this is the cause!” Mrs. Brenda exclaimed angrily.
“No wonder we were thrown back and injured,” Lord Roger replied, equally furious.
“It’s better if we retreat rather than face further difficulties,” Malcolm suggested.
“Yes, I agree with you,” Mrs. Leony replied.
“Very well, then let’s return to the village,” Lord Roger said as he jumped back into the tunnel.
Disheartened, they returned through the tunnel after leaving Mr. Remington’s house. Lord Roger gathered his followers to return to Voltre Castle. As morning approached, the group leaped at high speed and in an instant arrived there. They all entered the mirror except Mrs. Leony and Malcolm.
The next morning, George woke up and, as usual, went to his study to read a book. When he entered the room, he saw stacks of money and gold bars on the table, which surprised him. George didn’t understand how he had suddenly acquired such wealth so easily and without knowing who had placed all this wealth on his table. He collected the wealth and stored it in a safe, then searched the entire room but found nothing suspicious. Finally, he returned to his room.
Meanwhile, the Remington family managed to survive the ferocity of the werewolves and now hid in a cave, resting.
“We’re lucky we survived, and they didn’t chase us into this cave,” Mr. Remington said.
“Maybe they couldn’t enter the basement,” Mrs. Janet replied.
“I doubt it! They’ll surely keep trying to break down the door to chase us,” Mr. Remington replied.
“What saved us then?” Mrs. Janet asked, puzzled.
Mr. Remington shrugged and went out again to find some food he could cook. Soon after, he managed to catch a rabbit and cook it. That morning, the family ate roasted rabbit meat to sustain themselves.
“I will find out why we are safe from the pursuit of those werewolves,” said Mr. Remington as he left the cave.
“You must be cautious of your surroundings,” replied Mrs. Janet.
“Yes, I brought a weapon to be on alert,” said Mr. Remington.
Mr. Remington began to investigate the reason they were safe, so he traversed the Cambrian mountains. He then found wolf tracks and a lot of furs scattered on the ground, indicating that the werewolves had managed to break through the underground and enter this mountain’s border.
“Why didn’t they continue the chase?” Mr. Remington wondered to himself.
The middle-aged man was busy searching for answers while looking around, then his eyes fell on the Wolfsbane plants that grew abundantly there. So many of these plants were present that the border of the Sotana forest was almost covered by them.
Now, Mr. Remington realized that the werewolves could not continue the chase because of this repellent plant. So, he picked some Wolfsbane plants and brought them back to the cave. Upon arriving there, he met his wife and explained everything.
Mrs. Janet was very happy to hear the news; she was sure that the plant was a repellent for those werewolves, and they planted it in front of the cave. Since that incident, Mr. Remington’s family never returned to their village; they didn’t want to experience such a bad event again.
One night, George was in his study, continuing his office work, when he suddenly heard a sound coming from the living room. The sound startled him, and he immediately stood up and went to the living room.
The sound was very disturbing and intriguing; it continued until he arrived there, and then it stopped.
“What was that sound?” George wondered to himself.
Suddenly, a faint voice calling from within the mirror startled George, making him turn towards it. He immediately approached the mirror and stared at it.
“We are Grandpa Roger and Grandma Brenda,” said Roger, laughing loudly.
“Aren’t you supposed to be dead?” asked George, confused.
“Indeed, and our spirits now inhabit this mirror,” replied Roger.
“Why are your spirits in there?” asked George in fear.
“We are the ones who gave you wealth,” replied Brenda.
Then, Grandma Brenda explained that their deaths were a result of a pact they made with the werewolf king.
“Why did you do that?” asked George, bewildered.
“Your ancestors have always lived in poverty, so we did not want the Hurley lineage to continue living that way,” replied Roger.
“My God! So we have lived with abundant wealth because you made a pact with the werewolf king?” asked George loudly.
“Exactly, and you have enjoyed the results,” replied Brenda with a smile.
George was very angry, so spontaneously he threw the vase from the room at the mirror, but strangely, the mirror did not break and remained hanging on the wall as before
George staggered backward, utterly shocked when the mirror emitted a brilliant blue light that illuminated the entire room. Then, from within the mirror, dozens of werewolves, including Grandpa Roger and Grandma Brenda, leaped out, revealing themselves. Finally, King Bovier, the werewolf king, appeared in his royal robe, standing before George with a terrifying gaze.
George took several steps back, trembling, unable to believe that his beloved mirror contained such a horrifying mystery. He couldn't escape the room as the door was tightly locked. Slowly, they began to approach George, grinning, and the werewolves introduced themselves.
It turned out that among these supernatural creatures were several ancestors who had made a pact with the werewolf king.
"We are all followers of King Bovier, and one day you will become one too," Roger said with a mysterious smile.
"I don't want to join you, and cancel the pact!" George shouted in fear.
"It can never be undone, and you will remain my follower," Bovier replied, laughing loudly.
"Take the treasure back! I don't need it!" George screamed, becoming more hysterical.
"My answer is still 'NO.' Are you deaf?" Bovier asked, starting to get angry.
George fell silent, unable to resist the power of these creatures. He realized that all the wealth he had obtained from his family's inheritance came from the forbidden pact made between his ancestors and the werewolf king.
"One year from now, you will become a werewolf, and we will hold a welcoming ceremony," Bovier declared.
Everyone present howled loudly, causing several unaware servants to wake up, especially Willy, who was sleeping in his room. The young man was very shocked by the werewolves' howls. In his fear, he tried to get up and leave his room to find the source and cause of the noise. Slowly, he stepped into the family room and peeked through the keyhole.
He was incredibly shocked but fortunately didn't panic too much upon witnessing the event, though his heart pounded erratically.
"I have to get out of here," Willy said, hurrying away.
Willy rushed back to his room, busy worrying about his safety. His heart was filled with anxiety, while his heartbeat was irregular. He could faintly hear the werewolves' howls until he finally lost consciousness again.
The next morning, all the inhabitants of Voltaire Castle went about their activities as usual as if nothing had ever happened. However, it was different for Willy, who began to suspect all the castle's inhabitants for his safety.
Mr. George was seen leaving the castle with a gloomy face, accompanied by his wife. They were going to the church with their three children. Shortly after, the car carrying the family drove off and disappeared at the crossroads. Now, only the servants remained, continuing to carry out their duties.
Willy was cleaning the grass outside the castle grounds. The atmosphere was quiet since Malcom and Mrs. Leony happened to be in town shopping for groceries. Willy decided to use this opportunity to escape.
Willy hurried into the yard, where he saw his colleague Thomas sweeping. Thomas was puzzled by Willy's haste and immediately called out to him.
"Willy! Why are you in such a hurry?" Thomas asked while sweeping.
"Didn't you hear the howling last night?" Willy asked.
"I did, and it was very frightening," Thomas replied.
"We'd better leave quickly; this place is very dangerous," Willy suggested again.
"I don't understand what you mean," Thomas said, looking confused.
"Just go inside, pack your things, and come with me!" Willy ordered impatiently.
Finally, Thomas obeyed Willy's command. He packed his belongings and mounted his horse. The two of them fled to Hogan village. Along the way, Willy recounted the events he had witnessed the previous night and also shared his suspicions about their two friends who had never returned to the castle.
"Do you remember Frank and John, who never came back?" Willy asked.
"I remember them," Thomas replied, nodding.
"I think they knew about the castle's mystery and fled," Willy speculated.
"Is that true?" Thomas asked, surprised.
"Of course, because I once saw John's face looking very distressed while working here," Willy answered, trying to convince his friend.
Finally, they arrived safely at Hogan Village. The villagers were delighted to see them return from the mysterious castle.
Unexpectedly, Thomas and Willy met their two neighbors, who had returned to the village earlier. They were very happy to be reunited. Frank then recounted all the events he and John had experienced, revealing that Mrs. Leony was a follower of the werewolves. Hearing Frank's story, Thomas felt grateful for surviving the slaughter of the ferocious creatures, thanks to obeying Willy's orders.
"Thank you, Willy! You've saved me," Thomas said, smiling at Willy.
"You're lucky you didn't ignore my warning. If you had, I don't know what would have happened to you," Willy replied.
The villagers felt relieved that their two neighbors were safe, and they promised never to return to the castle to work. Meanwhile, Malcolm had returned from Cardiff with Mrs. Leony, but upon entering the castle, she couldn't find them. Mrs. Leony's suspicions grew even stronger after Frank and John had successfully escaped.
She ran outside to inform Malcom about it, and upon hearing Mrs. Leony's report, the head of the household lost his patience.
"Those insolent fools!" Malcom yelled angrily.
"They need to be taught a lesson!" Mrs. Leony shouted, equally furious.
"They must have gone back to Hogan village," Malcom guessed, punching the stable wall.
Mrs. Leony said they couldn't attack the village directly because it was heavily planted with Wolfsbane, making it difficult to massacre the villagers. Hearing her report, Malcolm just laughed cynically and began planning something that would wipe out all the villagers in an instant.
Hearing Malcom's wicked plan, Mrs. Leony burst into laughter, clearly delighted by the brilliant scheme. Then they howled together, signaling that their mission would soon succeed. The howling caused the werewolves inside the mirror to leap out.
