Harvey looked down at me, and when he heard my words, a hint of mockery flashed in his eyes. "Divorce? You can’t bear to leave me, Michelle.”
I once was helpless in love with Harvey. Even a kind gesture from him made me overjoyed.
In the past five years, I had donated my blood to Claire 365 times. Every time I gave her a transfusion, he would give me something in return. Sometimes he got me gifts, and sometimes he agreed to spend some times with me.
He preferred to give me presents since he could have his assistant select them for him.
Despite that, I still firmly believed that he cared for me.
If he didn’t love me, why would he have helped me pay my stepfather's huge gambling debts?
If he didn’t love me, why would he have beat up those men who attempted to take ad-vantage of me in the bar?
If he didn’t love me, why would he have declared that I would be his wife in front of the women who teased me about dreaming of marrying into a wealthy family?
…
But the truth was, he didn’t have feelings for me.
Everything he did was for his childhood sweetheart, Claire.
After learning that, I felt upset and desperate, wanting to leave.
But he came to me with my mother's test results which showed that she had blood cancer.
For the sake of my mother, I continued to donate my blood to Claire.
But now with my mother’s demise, he could no longer threaten me.
From the moment I learned of my mother's death, all my love for him disappeared.
Yet, I didn't have time to argue.
The ongoing loss of blood led to my blurred vision and abdominal pain.
“H-Harvey, stop! It hurts so much…" I managed to utter.
I curled up in bed, covered in cold sweat.
He frowned at this, approached me and stoped in his tracks. Turning to the doctor, he asked, “Can we stop the transfusion right now?”
The doctor forced a smile.
“As Claire’s doctor, I don’t recommend this. But…”
Before the doctor finished speaking, the sympathy in Harvey’s eyes vanished. He cut the doctor off and said, “Then forget that.”
“Please, Harvey. It really hurts. The baby… Our baby…."
The unbearable pain from my abdomen made me resist frantically.
The needle broke, causing the transfusion to stop. The blood in the blood bag soon dis-appeared into Claire’s body.
Harvey hesitated momentary before instructing the doctor to give me a sedative.
"The patient was just rescued from the ruins. It was already risky to let her donate her blood. We had her sedated for several times. If we give her a sedate now, it might cause her brain damage,” the doctor responded, looking troubled.
Since it wouldn’t put her life in danger, Harvey was relieved secretly. He chuckled and said, “Just do as I say.”
Turning his attention back to me, he said, “Don’t be frightened, Michelle.
Even if you couldn’t take care of yourself, become foolish, you will still be my wife.”
I stared at him in utter disbelief.
But before I could struggle, the doctor had already given me a sedative.
Tears blurred my vision, and I grabbed Harvey’s arm and uttered, “My baby…”
He held my hand and said softly, “Don’t worry. We will have children.”
Despite his efforts to comfort me, he seemed oblivious to the fact that he had got me in this mess.
When I woke up again, there was no one around.
I was given a bed bath. It was as if what had happened was a just nightmare.
I felt dizzy and weak and my lips were dry, resulting from excessive blood loss.
I might die at any time. The medical staff were supposed to watch over me, yet there was no sign of them.
It didn’t leave me surprised. I was always left alone after blood transfusions.
What surprised me was that I didn’t lose the baby.
It must be a blessing.
The buzzing phone broke my reverie. It was from the hospital. I was asked to collect my mother’s body.
It has been five days since my mother's passing.
I took my mother's body and went to the crematory.
When the staff worker handed me the urn, I couldn't help but burst into tears.
But I couldn’t indulge myself in sadness for too long.
I needed to contact a funeral home for my mother's funeral, and then find a grave for her.
I just contacted a funeral home when I suddenly saw Harvey, followed by Claire.
"Harv, my cat has turned into ashes. we will never see her again."
Claire held the urn, her voice filled with sadness.
I wanted to avoid them, but Harvey had already seen me.
He paused for a moment, then furrowed his eyebrows.
"What are you doing here?” he asked.
He made it sound like I had committed a crime showing up here.
I didn’t want to waste time talking to him. The funeral home will send someone to pick me up soon.
Just as I was about to leave, Claire’s voice halted me.
"You must be Michelle, I'm Claire Burke. Thank you for donating blood to me."
She cheerfully took my hand, but I brushed off her grasp.
Harvey frowned at me and scolded, “Michelle, what are your manners?”
I retorted with a sneer, "If you had manners, you wouldn’t have made me donate blood."
He was about to speak, but was interrupted by Claire.
"It's okay, Harv. I invited you to my party on your wedding night. It's understandable that she is upset. It’s risky for her to donate so much blood. Don’t force her if she doesn’t want to give me a transfusion.”
Claire anxiously tugged at Harvey's sleeve. He immediately looked away from me.
“Michelle, why are you so petty? Claire is a patient,” he said disapprovingly as he fixed his eyes on her.
Harvey frowned. I was very familiar with that look. I knew he was angry.
In the past, no matter whose fault it was, I would apologize first and take all the blame on myself.
But now I just wanted to let my mother rest in peace and never saw Harvey again.
"Okay, I'll get going first,” I said.
I turned around and left. Harvey stared at my retreating figure, looking baffled.
This was the first time I hadn’t made a scene because he had defended Claire.
Harvey, for the first time, left Claire behind and caught up with me, asking with concern,
"Are you good?"
I gazed at Harvey, my tone laced with sarcasm. “You tell me.”
Blood transfusions had already taken a toll on my health.
Harvey had forced me to give Claire a transfusion right after I was rescued from the ru-ins.
There had been a moment when I had thought that I might not be able to make it. But the thought of the unborn child helped me survive it.
When I went to collect my mother’s body at the hospital, the doctor noticed my pallid face and insisted I got a blood transfusion, but there was no available blood because my blood type was the rare rh negative.
Harvey might ask me to donate my blood to Claire, but he would never let her give me a blood transfusion
“Are you blind or something? Can’t you see my face?” I asked with a sneer.
Faced with my questions, he avoided eye contact with me.
But he quickly got an idea.
“I know you've been through a lot. I’ll fulfill my promise. I’m gonna call my assistant and put off my schedules,” he said.
He was talking about the promise he made to me about going on a honeymoon abroad with me during the recent blood transfusion.
A week ago, I might have been pleasantly surprised, thinking that I had finally won his affection.
But now his words only made me feel sick.
“No need. I’m serious about getting a divorce. It’s better to complete the procedures in a couple of days,” I said.
The thought of me and Harvey being husband and wife made me feel uncomfortable.
Harvey got worked up. “When will you stop making a fuss over it? You’ve donated blood to Claire before. You should have been used to it.”
“What should I get used to? Seeing those needle marks? Or feeling like dying after the excessive blood loss? Or facing your insulting remarks after my mom’s passing?”
As I spoke, I couldn’t help trembling with anger.
“Harvey, I don't owe you. It’s true you paid my stepfather’s debts. But I donate blood to Claire 366 times. We’re even now!”
Harvey was taken aback by my outburst. I had never got so agitated before.
Our first encounter was in a casino. My stepfather had planned to sell me to an old man to pay off his debts.
The old man, fat and was a big belly, was in his seventies. Rumor had it that he was prone to tormenting women in bed.
Back then, I was bent on committing a suicide. As long as my stepfather signed the con-tract, I would take out the blade hidden under my sleeve and kill myself.
Before I could take action, Harvey paid my stepfather’s debts.
I fell in love with him that day.
That was part of Harvey’s plan to get me to donate blood to Claire.
But the countless blood transfusions I had given her in the past three years that was worse than a ghost for three years has long been paid off.
I didn’t owe him anything.
Harvey felt a pang a sympathy but he dismissed it immediately. He threatened, “As long as your mother is still alive, you’ll always be in my debt.”
I laughed angrily. How dared he mention my mom!
I was about to speak, but Claire chimed in, her tone soft. "Michelle, why are you being so dramatic? Even time you give me a transfusion, Harv will have the chef prepared nu-tritious meals for you. It won’t harm your body. Besides, we’re aware of your mother’s condition. She is faking being sick…”
Before she could finish speaking, I slapped her across the face.
“What the fuck are you talking about?” I snapped.
My anger knew no bounds as I pushed her to the ground.
Harvey, who sympathized with me, instantly shouted at me, “What has gotten into you, Michelle?”
“Harv, she has gone too far. I struck a nerve, so she got flustered and hit me,” Claire cut in, appearing aggrieved.
Ignoring Harvey, I walked up to Claire who was back to her feet and hiding behind him.
Without a word, I hit her head hard with my mother's urn.
Harvey’s bodyguard immediately intervened, keeping me from harming Claire.
“Apologize to Claire!” Harvey snapped, glaring at me.
I met his gaze. “Do you also think it’s not a deal as long as I die from blood transfusions? Do you think my mother was pretending to be sick?”
He avoided meeting my eyes, and a hint of unease flashed across his face.
Although he remained silent, I knew his answer was positive.
My heart was torn into a million pieces. Desperation overwhelmed me.
“Come on."
Harvey's voice was hoarse, and he reached out his arms to hold me, but I dodged it.
g Claire suddenly covered her head and screamed, "Blood! I’m bleeding!”
The sadness in Harvey's eyes was replaced by fear.
“Harv, it hurts so much. I’m bleeding. I can’t stop the bleeding,” Claire continued.
She had hemophilia. Once she bled, it was hard to stop the bleeding. Blood trickled down her head.
"Call the ambulance!” Harvey instructed his bodyguard.
Claire grabbed his hand and said, “Harv, I need a blood transfusion, but Michelle won’t donate blood to me. What will become of me? I’m going to die?”
He raised his eyebrows, torn. Yet, he quickly made a decision.
"Michelle..."
I gestured for him to shut up as I picked up a stone covered in blood.
Having been aware of Claire's condition, I had held back when I hit her.
Apparently, she had secretly hit herself with the stone to cause the bleeding.
I stared at her. “Now that you have a death wish, then I will grand it.”
I held the urn and planned to leave, but Harvey held my hand.
"Give Claire a blood transfusion,” he said.
I shook off his hand and gave him a slap.
i'Harvey's face darkened and his voice turned cold. "Michelle, I won’t repeat it again.
Give her a transfusion."
I silently swung my arm wide and slapped him again. “Dream on.”
I was not a tool for prolonging someone's life.
"Michelle, my patience has its limits."
With a gesture from Harvey, several bodyguards intervened to subdue me. Given that I was holding the urn and resisting, they hesitated.
Seeing this, Harvey coldly instructed, “Just go get her. Forget that urn.”
When they subdued me, I resisted, and the urn broke, ashes all over the ground.
My mind went blank.
“Mom! Mom!” I called out hysterically after I came back to my senses.
With a derisive sneer, Harvey stepped on the ashes.
“You’re quite the actress. It’s a shame that you didn’t get into show business!” he mocked.
Turning to his bodyguards, he said, “Take her away!”
One of the bodyguards skillfully knocked me unconscious and settled me into the car.
Harvey sat in the back seat, looking at the unconscious Claire and me. Claire had fainted from excessive blood loss.
He took out his phone inexplicably and dialed his assistant's number.
“Tell the hospital to cure Michelle’s mother,” he told the assistant.
The assistant on the other end hesitated and replied, ”Mr. Dowding, Mrs. Dowding's mother deteriorated and passed away on your wedding night. I just watched the video sent by the bodyguard. The urn was Mrs. Dowding's mother's."
