Seeing that I didn’t move, she gradually became angry.
"William, what’s wrong with you? Why are you putting on airs? You’re not usually like this."
We’ve been together for five years, and I’ve always gone along with whatever she’s asked for.
I was accustomed to Zoey not acknowledging me on any occasion.
If I don’t play along, I’ll have to sweet-talk her even more after getting home.
I’ve tried every means to make her happy.
After all, I was a lickspittle.
In the four years of college, Brandon and Zoey had always been a couple.
And I pursued Zoey for four years without realizing it.
I had kept the seat in the classroom and prepared food for her.
It was not until I graduated that I knew I had pursued Brandon’s girlfriend for four years.
Just as I was about to give up, Zoey dumped him because he wanted to start a business and she was lack of sense of security.
She became my girlfriend then.
Zoey was really beautiful, and there were countless people in the university chasing after her.
I was the only one who had persisted for four years.
Since last month, Brandon and Zoey, who hadn’t been in touch for five years after breaking up, suddenly got back in touch last month.
They got back together as quickly as a wildfire in the prairie.
After just one phone call, they began to date frequently and meet each other.
At first, Zoey was a bit hesitant.
She felt completely relieved when she saw that I was pretending not to care.
Until today, the two of them hugged and kissed in front of me, completely ignoring me.
I finally realized that it wasn’t so difficult to let go of this relationship.
No matter how much I loved her, I couldn’t be shameless.
Noticing that I was still leaning against the back of the chair, Brandon kindly intervened.
"Hey man, Zoey can be willful sometimes. Cut her some slack."
I seemed to have become an outsider.
Zoey persisted in challenging me and refused to let it go.
"What’s up with your attitude today? Matthew invited us out of kindness and you are being rude!"
I had to kneel down and put on a show for Brandon’s treat.
I glanced up at my girlfriend, and she was giving me a fierce look.
Her face was ruddy, and her skin was delicate.
This was the outcome of five years of dedicated work from me, a lickspittle.
She could get everything from me as long as she asked.
I even had to think twice before I bought anything for myself.
Now, Zoey’s well-kept face was giving me this really weird look, like she was about to threaten me.
I picked up my glass and tried to regain my dignity.
"Dude, I’m not gonna perform today. Come on, let me raise a toast to you. Thank you for making out with my girlfriend."
Brandon had always known that I was a decent person.
It was the first time he’d heard me use such strong language, and it took him a while to react.
Then he drank the glass of wine with me.
Zoey had completely lost her patience.
"William, what do you mean by saying that?"
Even Brandon’s girlfriend, Jessie, who had been quietly munching away, couldn’t take it anymore.
"Hey girl, you might think we’re fools, but we’re not blind."
Zoey blushed, maybe because she’s always a bit jealous of pretty girls.
She glared at Jessie.
"What nonsense are you talking about? Brandon and I are innocent. If you don’t trust him, why are you dating him?"
Unexpectedly, Jessie laughed her head off as if she had heard the funniest joke.
"I know what kind of person he is."
Brandon covered his mouth and coughed softly.
When Zoey heard someone putting Brandon down, she stood up and helped to refute.
"Brandon’s a great guy. Why are you being so mean? Show some respect."
After hearing this, Jessie glanced at me with sympathy in her eyes.
I shook my head, indicating that I was used to it.
I poured another glass for myself and Brandon.
"Thanks for the meal, Mr. Smith. And thanks to my girlfriend too."
I drank it all in one gulp.
Brandon gained face, patting me on the shoulder.
"You’re welcome, buddy."
Upon hearing this, Zoey contained her anger with a sense of satisfaction.
I poured myself a third glass, then stood up and bowed to him.
"For this third toast, I wish you two a hundred years of happiness. I won’t bother you anymore."
Hearing this, Zoey finally realized that I was angry.
I always compromised with her, but today we switched roles.
She just couldn’t get used to it. She still had a smile on her face, but as she stepped on the wine box, her foot suddenly hit the ground.
Seeing that I was about to leave, she got up and grabbed me.
"What do you mean? Are we breaking up? Can you stop being so unreasonable?"
I pulled out my arm and looked into her eyes.
"Hey, I gotta be real with you, Zoey. let’s break up. I don’t care if you want to kiss anyone else."
She was a little puzzled and tried to save her face.
"Just because I’m sitting with Brandon to watch a movie? You’re so clingy."
I picked up the car keys on the table and was about to leave.
Zoey panicked and ran up to stop me.
"You’re not even a man, always so jealous. If you come begging tomorrow, I’ll just ignore you."
I pushed her away and responded to her.
"Okay, don’t forget to swing by and grab your stuff."
I didn’t look at Zoey’s current expression.
I was also not determined to leave a person who I had cherished for five years.
I really didn’t want to let go of her.
I knew that she was in love with someone else, but I couldn’t help feeling regretful for having wasted so much time on her.
I couldn’t have my own hobbies when I was with her. I couldn’t even have my own time and friends.
I had to flatter her even in front of my parents.
My mom must be extremely disappointed in me.
After all, I used to be her pride and joy because of my decent job.
When I got home, I drank all night.
I looked at the pile of gifts I bought for Zoey in the house.
I was confused about why I couldn’t win her heart.
I used the excuse of being drunk to call her.
I wanted to give her another chance. If she could coax me like I used to, I would propose to her.
The phone rang for a long time, and Brandon answered it.
Zoey never saved my phone number because I was the only one who would call her.
Brandon picked up the phone and said hello. Seeing that no one responded, he hung up the phone.
I gave myself two tight slaps. I was such a buffoon.
The class reunion was scheduled the next day. and I knew for sure that I’d see Zoey again.
I tidied myself up and went to the meeting.
Since we had broken up, I should be frank and put an end to my youthful days.
Zoey had come with Brandon when the time was up.
Seeing that I was present, she was stunned for a moment and then resumed her posture.
Pretending not to see me.
Seeing this, all my classmates were talking about it in private. I could tell that the idea of me being cheated on was really stuck in their heads.
They chose a seat next to me and sat down.
Zoey’s arrogant look suggested that she believed I, a simp, had pursued her all the way here.
Everyone started making small talk. Zoey couldn’t help but whisper into my ear.
"Why are you here? Are you regretting it? Are you here to pray for forgiveness?"
I tidied up my collar and leaned against my seat to listen to everyone’s greetings.
Some classmates were curious about the situation.
"I remember that Zoey was in a relationship with William. When she they break up with him and get back together with Brandon?"
The class reunion was nothing more than a gathering for gossip and competition.
If I hadn’t agreed to come, I wouldn’t have been here today.
I unbuttoned my shirt and loosened my grip.
"We just broke up yesterday."
These words thoroughly infuriated Zoey.
"William, what do you mean? Are you here to humiliate me? I’ll completely ignore you if you keep doing this."
Brandon has sure seen a whole lot. He pulled Zoey aside and made a joke to change the topic.
He moved closer to me and smiled cheekily.
"I’m not trying to steal your girlfriend, man. Just messing around. No need to get so serious."
Seeing me clenching my fists, he was even more pleased.
"To be honest, I know exactly how Zoey likes to kiss and what kind of postures she prefers. How about we share some tips?"
Brandon started cussing at Zoey, and I got so mad that I grabbed the dishes from the table and plopped them on his head.
Zoey saw that I had beaten up Brandon.
She screamed to protect him and didn’t forget to scold me.
"Are you crazy, William? I had no idea you were the type to throw punches."
The scene became lively, and several classmates were pointing and whispering.
Looking at the two of them hugging each other, I sighed with emotion.
The truth was that nine years of my youth had gone to waste.
Zoey glared at me.
"William, you’ve gone too far. Let’s break up. I’ll move into Brandon’s house today. I’m done with your stuff."
I took a few deep breaths, took out a condom from my pocket, and handed it to her.
"Take it. You probably didn’t have time to buy it last night."
