When my wife, Katherine Johnson, and her childhood sweetheart, Zack Wilson, were on an overseas vacation, they somehow went missing. All they left for me was a newborn baby born of their affair.
20 years later, I make a post about my son, Wade, passing the exam and joining the police force. Unexpectedly, Katherine and Zack return to the country and decide to sue me.
At the prosecutor's stand, Zack sports a slicked-back hairstyle and can be seen wearing a smart-looking suit. The things he says, however, are very rude.
"Many years ago, Katherine and I got married after she got a divorce. She then gave birth to a son for me. Harry, who was jealous of our happiness, stole Wade from us!
"We've been looking for Wade over the past 20 years, and yet Harry refuses to return him to us! As Wade's biological parents, we have the right to demand him back!"
Katherine glares at me angrily as well.
"Harry, did you steal Wade simply because you're infertile?"
The court hearing is streamed live on various platforms. The viewers are enraged, to say the least. They begin bashing me in the comment section.
"To think that he actually stole someone else's kid just because he doesn't have any kids of his own!"
"He's the reason that kid was separated from his actual family! What a disgusting, vile man! He must return the custody to the kid's biological parents!"
But when Wade does get summoned to the court, everyone is left shell-shocked.
"Harry, you took my son back then, and now you're refusing to admit it! I'm telling you, he's our biological child. You're nothing but a thief. You have no right to be his father. You're going to lose this case today!" Zack Wilson shouted, glaring at me viciously.
My ex-wife, Katherine Johnson, gave me a mocking smile. "Harry Miller, you're the one who pursued me back then. I stopped loving you a long time ago. I never imagined you would sink so low as to kidnap my son. Give him back. When the truth comes out, how do you plan to survive with that kind of reputation?"
All eyes in the courtroom turned to me.
I remained expressionless. "I've said it before. Wade is not your son."
20 years ago, I had been married to Katherine for barely six months when she cheated on me with her childhood sweetheart, Zack. Under the pretext of a class reunion, the two of them went on a trip to Emeraldia together. They vanished without a trace and never came back.
I went from being a newlywed to a widower overnight. While I was still drowning in grief, I discovered they had left behind a wailing baby boy.
20 years later, when I posted online that my son Wade had passed the exam and officially joined the police department, the two people who had been "dead" for decades suddenly resurfaced. They showed up at my doorstep, demanding I return their son.
I swallowed my anger and told them it was impossible for Wade to be their son.
They decided I was determined to cling to their promising "golden boy". They caused a scene outside my house every day and even rallied distant relatives to pressure me into giving up my home.
After I refused and had security remove them, they sued me.
Now, my calm indifference clearly infuriated Zack.
His eyes turned red as he pulled a yellowed birth certificate from his bag.
"Look! This is proof that Kate carried our son to term and gave birth to Wade Wilson after enduring so much hardship!" he hissed.
Along with the certificate was a photo of an eight-pound baby boy, smiling toothlessly at the camera.
Zack roared. "My wife gave birth just a month before that heartless man took him away from us! Our baby barely had a taste of his mother's milk!"
His fists clenched, his knuckles turning white. Katherine clung tightly to him and took out another faded photograph.
Through tears, she handed it to the judge. "This was taken when my son was one month old. Look how sweet and well-behaved he was. It's been 20 years, and this is the only memory I have left of him."
Katherine and Zack clung to each other and sobbed.
I showed no reaction at all, not even sparing them a glance.
The live broadcast of the trial had drawn a flood of online viewers. The comments exploded with fury.
"What a disgusting excuse for a man! He tore a family apart and made them search for their child for 20 years, and he still looks indifferent."
"He's a sociopath. I support Katherine and Zack taking their son back. Harry should be sent to prison."
No matter how vicious the comments became, I remained calm.
Since I showed no reaction, Zack's face darkened further.
He suddenly pulled a tattered baby outfit from inside his jacket and barked, "Harry! This is what you left behind when you kidnapped Wade. All these years, whenever I looked at this tiny shirt, I kept wondering where my son went. Do you even understand what that feels like?"
His eyes reddened as he finished speaking.
Katherine snapped, "Harry, you stole my right to be a mother! A man like you is nothing but a parasite. You don't even deserve to live!"
I glanced at them coldly. "I told you. You couldn't have given birth to Wade."
I knew I was stating a simple fact. For Zack and Katherine to produce a son like Wade, there would have to be some kind of genetic miracle. But in their eyes, I was just refusing to admit the truth.
The livestream comments grew even harsher.
"I've seen shameless people before, but never someone this shameless."
"He took someone else's kid and clung to him for 20 years. He's twisted and sick. Things never end well for people like that."
As the feed devolved into outright personal attacks, the judge frowned and struck the gavel. "Plaintiff, please provide substantive evidence."
"We have evidence," Zack said heatedly. "We even have a witness."
A frail elderly woman was escorted in by a bailiff. Zack pointed at her. "This is Esme Gosling. She used to work as a housekeeper in Harry's home. She personally saw him bring back an unidentified baby."
Esme nodded. "Yes. I worked at Harry's house back then. One evening, he came home drenched in sweat, carrying a heavy bundle on his back. I was curious, so I went over to look. When I opened up the bundle, there was a chubby baby boy inside."
She continued, "I was terrified. Harry was already divorced and hadn't remarried, so whose child was it? I asked him, but he couldn't answer me. Later, I overheard him muttering to himself and realized that he'd taken someone else's baby."
When she finished in her trembling voice, I almost laughed. "Esme, you worked at my house for less than half a day before I fired you. Are you sure you ever saw me kidnap a child?"
The wrinkles on her face twitched, and guilt flickered in her eyes.
Then she firmly said, "I was fired because I saw something I shouldn't have. When I left your house, I even heard you beating that baby, yelling that his father had stolen your wife!"
Her words detonated in the courtroom.
The livestream exploded with curses.
I remained composed. "Esme, you're making this up."
She faltered. Zack's face turned ashen with rage. "Harry! The evidence is right here, and you're still denying it?"
Katherine, who was equally furious, handed a document to the judge. "Your Honor, I also have Harry's medical report from years ago. He was diagnosed with azoospermia. He can't have children."
A wave of shock swept through the courtroom.
"He can't even father a child. How can he have a 20-year-old son? He must have kidnapped him."
"Your Honor, the evidence is overwhelming. He's lying. Just punish him."
I let out a cold laugh. "What does it matter whether I have azoospermia or not? What does that have to do with me having a son?"
20 years ago, they abandoned their month-old son and disappeared as if he had never existed.
They had never met my son. Their entire narrative was nothing more than guesswork. If they understood the truth, they would never dare to make such absurd claims.
Katherine's cheeks flushed with fury. "Harry, you're still denying it even now! Since you never remarried and can't have children, where did this child come from?"
Zack fixed me with a furious stare, then pulled a voice recorder from his bag and pressed play right there in court. "Your Honor, hear this from Harry's own relative."
The device sputtered for a few seconds before a hoarse male voice came through. "Harry's son? He took him. The child was born after Katherine's divorce. Harry even registered him as his own, thinking nobody would ever discover the truth."
When the playback stopped, Zack gave a sneer. "Harry, what do you have to say now?"
I drew a slow breath, forcing my temper under control.
They clearly believed that 20 years had erased everything and that they could rewrite history. Unfortunately for them, their plan was destined to fail.
I met their eyes calmly. "Wade's custody is mine. Nothing you've presented today proves I 'kidnapped' him. A single witness carries little weight. As for this so-called recording, that relative has been dead for three years. You can fabricate whatever you like, but without verification, I won't accept it."
The judge nodded slightly as I finished speaking.
Zack's face turned red with rage. He bellowed, "Harry! I am Wade's biological father! No matter what you say, it doesn't change that fact! If you let Wade see me, I can take him for a paternity test immediately!"
Katherine glared at me. "Exactly! We'll contact the hospital right away!"
I let out a cold laugh. "Fine. Too bad, even a paternity test won't help you."
The livestream viewers erupted in fury, flooding the chat with insults.
"What a vile man. With all that evidence staring him in the face, he's still lying. He is extremely stubborn."
"I can't wait for Zack and Katherine to take Wade for a DNA test. That'll shut Harry up real fast."
I stood there calmly with my arms crossed, as if daring them to do their worst.
Zack trembled with rage. He yanked out a document and slapped it down on the table. "Harry! You asked for this! Take a good look. Wade Wilson personally signed this voluntary custody transfer agreement!"
The courtroom went silent for a moment, then the livestream erupted in cheers.
"Well done, you two! Now Harry's finished!"
I stared coldly at them. Zack leaned forward with a provocative grin. "Harry, Wade signed this himself and mailed it to us. He said you've been controlling him and keeping him from contacting us, but blood ties can't be severed. He's already agreed to transfer his custody back to us."
