My name was Hannah Robinett. Tomorrow would be the annual Valentine's Day, and sadly, I always had difficulty choosing gifts.
My boyfriend Daley Macy didn't care for clothes or jewelry.
And of course, he wouldn't like my DIY gifts.
My bestie Lily Chavez offered me a ridiculous idea.
"You haven't seen each other for a long time. Why don't you package yourself as a gift and give it to him?"
I rolled my eyes and immediately rejected Lily's bizarre idea without even thinking about it.
I worked in the IT industry and was very busy. I didn't have time to go to Daley at all.
Lily muttered, complaining about me.
"You're unreasonable and foolish. If you never have time to see him, you will lose him sooner or later."
I retorted.
"No way. He understands me and loves me a lot. Not all couples have to celebrate Valentine's Day, OK? It's just a holiday. You're the unreasonable one."
Lily and I argued fiercely over and over again because of different views on love, with no winner or loser.
I always thought that for romantic holidays like Valentine's Day, sending a gift to one's partner would be enough.
But I was proved wrong quickly. Daley hinted at me coquettishly at night.
"You're not coming to see me on Valentine's Day again this year, right?"
I understood his meaning and thought carefully. Because we were in a long-distance relationship, and I was too busy with work, I did neglect his feelings.
So, I decided to follow Lily's advice, take a day off tomorrow to go to Los Angeles where Daley was, and wrap myself up as a gift for him.
But I also wanted to keep it a secret, so I deliberately comforted Daley.
"Sorry. And you don't have to come find me. But I promise there will be a big surprise."
Daley immediately said bitterly.
"Fine!
"The gift I bought for you should also arrive at your house soon."
I sat on the bed and couldn't help but smile. Daley always gave me gifts in advance.
Sure enough, five minutes later, there was a knock on the door.
"Hello, Ms. Robinett. Here's your delivery."
I was stunned because, in previous Valentine's Days, Daley would order takeout flowers for me. How come it was a delivery today?
After opening the door, I took the brown box from the deliveryman and unpacked it. Inside was a large red gift box.
The box was tied with blue lace ribbons on all sides, and there was a beautiful and delicate bow on the top.
I figured it was cosmetics or something.
But when I opened it, I actually saw a round object.
A grape?
I was stunned. I had seen people giving flowers and jewelry, and it was the first time I had ever seen a grape as a gift. And there was only one!
I immediately asked Daley online.
[The gift is great. I really like it. But why a grape?]
Daley replied to me instantly.
[It comes from the only special tree in the world, and it cost me 150,000 dollars. It represents my forever love to you.]
I was completely shocked. I picked up the grape and carefully examined it, never expecting that such an inconspicuous thing could be worth as much as a down payment for a house.
I had a hard time believing it, so I searched online and found that its price was indeed so outrageous!
I couldn't help but lecture Daley.
[Next time, don't buy such extravagant things for me. Even though you're making a lot of money now, you shouldn't waste it.]
[Come on. It's not like I always buy you stuff like this.]
When Daley and I first got together, he was just an employee at a small company and didn't have much money. On Valentine's Day and other occasions, he often gave me flowers, snack gift packs, and so on.
But in recent years, he successfully started his own business with his active mind and became a manager at Giant Group, earning a salary of over 1 million dollars per year.
Even the gifts he gave me had become more high-end and classy.
I carefully picked up the box containing the grape worth over 100,000 dollars.
Daley repeatedly reminded me on WhatsApp.
[Eat it tomorrow. Tomorrow is the festival. Put it in the refrigerator. Oh, and let me know when you eat it.]
I happily said yes.
In fact, I really wanted to frame the grape as a souvenir. I could bear to see it become poop.
I sighed. How nice it would be if I could exchange the grape for gold or a car!
The next morning, I got up early and got ready.
I put on exquisite makeup, wore a pretty dress, went to the supermarket, bought a big, beautifully folded suitcase that could fit me, and put it in the trunk.
When I arrived at Daley's place, I would call a delivery service to pick me and the suitcase up and deliver us there.
After returning home, I took out the grape from the refrigerator and looked at it as if it were a treasure.
I carefully examined the grape, wondering if it was different from other ordinary grapes. Perhaps there was gold hiding somewhere that I hadn't noticed.
Suddenly, the grape fell to the ground and rolled.
I was so scared that I hurriedly chased after the grape.
Just as I was about to pick it up, my golden retriever Milo swallowed it.
I watched helplessly as the silly dog swallowed the grape without even chewing it.
I felt like my heart was being stabbed.
I felt frozen in place, but then I snapped back to reality and rushed to Milo. I forcefully pried open his mouth and shook him, trying to make him spit out the grape.
All my efforts were in vain. Then I held onto his limbs and vigorously shook his body again. Milo howled but still didn't spit out the grape.
I panicked instantly. The grape was worth a lot, and it was a gift from Dale. And Milo ate it just like that?
But no matter how unwilling I was, I couldn't gut Milo, could I?
I knelt on the floor and mourned for Daley's grape.
After a minute, I kissed Milo's head a few times.
I'd pretend that I ate the grape.
"Milo, I'm going to see Daley. I'll leave you at my colleague's house. Wait for me to come back!"
Just at this moment, Daley sent me a message.
[Have you eaten the grape? Is it good?]
I replied to him with great guilt.
[Yes, I have. It's worth the high price. It's delicious with abundant juice and delicate flesh.]
[Take a picture of the peel. I wanna check if you're telling the truth.]
[I ate the peel too. It's so expensive. I don't wanna waste it!]
After saying that, I ignored him and prepared to set off!
As the car drove along the smooth highway, I was thrilled. How excited would Daley be to see me as his present?
I couldn't help but play a song at full volume.
As a result, I didn't realize that Daley had called until I reached the city.
I didn't call back since I was about to see him.
I called a truck, and after I explained the situation, the driver couldn't help but laugh.
"I don't know what you young people are thinking. You're quite romantic."
I smiled awkwardly.
"Sir, I will get into the suitcase now. There are pulleys at the bottom of the suitcase. Push me to Room 605, Unit 3, Building 31 of Star Community and then knock on his door."
"OK. But aren't you afraid of being suffocated?"
"There are several holes on the top of the suitcase for ventilation."
The driver agreed readily, and I curiously climbed into the suitcase, waiting to see the surprised and shocked expression on Daley's face.
The truck quickly arrived at the destination, and I felt the driver pushing me unsteadily onto the elevator.
He found the destination and knocked on the door.
"Hello, Sir, your package."
I quickly tidied myself up in the suitcase, straightened my hair, patted the foundation on my face, and got into the best state possible.
The door was open.
I was pushed in.
But Daley didn't open the box right away, so I stayed quietly inside.
After waiting for about ten minutes, there was still no movement, and I was confused.
Then I heard some strange sounds.
There were some squeaky sounds, which were quite harsh and unpleasant to hear.
And there was a woman struggling and moaning.
It sounded like someone was tearing transparent tape and binding a woman.
At this point, my excitement had turned into fear. My heart was pounding, and cold sweat was dripping from my forehead.
What was Daley doing?
