Chapter 9

POV: Ivy

Morning light hit my face before I remembered where I was.

I opened my eyes on the media room sofa, the heavy weight of Kyle's arm resting securely across my waist. My blouse lay discarded on the Persian rug, and his dress shirt was unbuttoned, exposing the hard lines of his chest. We had stopped before crossing the final line, but the evidence of how completely I had surrendered my defenses overnight was scattered across the room.

I reached down and carefully shifted his arm. I needed to leave before he woke up.

The terrifying realization that I was actually falling for the icy billionaire had kept me awake for hours. I gathered my clothes with trembling fingers, slipping out of the media room while he was still deeply asleep. I couldn't face him yet; I needed the harsh, grounding reality of my new corporate job to remind me of who I was outside of his overwhelming orbit.

At nine o'clock, I walked into the downtown headquarters of HarborPoint Logistics, determined to earn every dollar on my new contract and prove I was more than just Thomas Blackwood's charity case.

The illusion shattered before lunch.

The receptionist stopped typing the second I stepped off the elevator. Two junior associates by the water cooler lowered their voices as I passed. By noon, I had access to a computer terminal but no actual assignments. There was no team attached to my title, and the budget code for my department was exactly two days old.

I took my empty ceramic mug toward the break room, stopping dead just outside the frosted glass door.

"Did you see she took the senior executive desk?" a woman whispered loudly from inside.

"Executive instruction," a second voice replied, sharp and bitter. "She doesn't even have an international freight background."

"She doesn't need it. My manager saw the internal email. The directive came straight from Kyle Blackwood's office. She is sleeping with the heir."

My fingers tightened around the handle of my mug until my knuckles turned white.

The humiliation burned the back of my neck, hot and suffocating. I retreated to the emergency stairwell, my footsteps completely silent on the carpet, and immediately dialed the external recruiter who had rushed my offer letter.

"Who referred me?" I demanded the second he answered the line.

"Ivy, I—"

"Do not give me the corporate runaround," I interrupted, my voice echoing harshly off the concrete walls. "Who called you?"

Silence stretched over the line. "A man named Marcus," the recruiter admitted quietly. "He stated the parent investment group wanted a senior position created for you immediately."

My stomach plummeted. Kyle had not recommended me for an opportunity; he had manufactured a gilded cage.

Every compliment in the offer letter was a lie. Last night in the media room, I thought he was finally seeing me as an equal, but he was just using his massive financial leverage to keep me on his indirect payroll. He didn't believe in my abilities. He was still trying to control my entire existence.

I marched back to my desk, printed my contract, wrote a single word across the top in thick black ink—RESIGNATION—and shoved the paper into my bag.

I pushed through the revolving glass doors of the HarborPoint building and stepped out into the freezing city air, my heart physically aching from the betrayal.

Three blocks away, I stopped at a busy crosswalk.

Across the street, a flash of pristine white caught my eye. Cecilia sat at a corner table outside a small Italian cafe, wearing oversized sunglasses and a designer trench coat. The man sitting across from her shifted his metal chair, bringing his face into the sunlight.

A jagged, ugly scar cut directly across his left cheek.

My blood turned to absolute ice. It was the loan shark from the underground club. The exact same man Eric had sold me to.

I immediately ducked behind a metal bus shelter. I pulled my phone from my coat pocket, my hands shaking violently as I opened the camera application. I zoomed in on the cafe patio and hit record.

Cecilia reached into her expensive leather handbag. She pulled out a thick manila envelope and slid it smoothly across the table. The scarred man picked it up, peeling back the paper flap to reveal thick, banded stacks of hundred-dollar bills. He gave her a sharp nod and tucked the envelope inside his heavy jacket.

A passing delivery truck temporarily blocked the street noise, but as it passed, Cecilia leaned forward, her red lips moving sharply.

"Keep pressure on the girl," her voice carried faintly over the distance. "Eric is useful until he isn't."

I pressed the red button, stopping the recording. My breathing turned shallow and rapid as I stared at the saved video file.

Cecilia knew Eric's name at the horse ranch because she was paying him. She knew the loan sharks. She was the one financing the violent men who were hunting me down. Kyle’s perfect childhood best friend was quietly engineering my nightmare, all while Kyle was busy playing puppet master with my career.

I stepped off the curb and raised my hand. A yellow taxi screeched to a halt in front of me.

"Blackwood Tower," I instructed the driver, sliding into the worn leather backseat.

As the car merged into the heavy city traffic, the lingering affection from last night hardened into a lethal, focused blade. I was not just going to his office to return a fake employment contract. I was going to show the arrogant billionaire exactly what kind of monster he had been protecting.

Chapter 10

POV: Ivy

The taxi dropped me outside Blackwood Tower, the towering glass facade reflecting the harsh midday sun. I bypassed the main security desk, slipping through the turnstiles behind a group of distracted executives, and rode the elevator straight to the top floor.

The heavy, suffocating anger in my chest had crystalized into absolute, freezing clarity. Kyle thought he was the undisputed master of my life, pulling my strings from his penthouse, but he had no idea I was walking in with the evidence to burn his perfect narrative to ashes.

The executive floor was unnervingly quiet. I marched directly toward the heavy mahogany double doors of the CEO suite.

The doors were cracked open just an inch. Julian’s arrogant, mocking laugh drifted into the hallway, stopping me dead in my tracks.

"The thirty days are up tomorrow, Kyle," Julian said, the clinking of ice in a crystal glass echoing sharply. "So, what is the grand finale? Are you dumping the stepsister at the charity gala, or are you just going to kick her out of the estate tonight?"

I held my breath, my fingers hovering inches from the brass handle. My blood slowed to a crawl.

"Shut your mouth, Julian," Kyle growled. His voice lacked its usual smooth composure; it sounded raw and dangerously frayed. "The bet is dead. It has been dead since the second week."

"Come on, do not tell me you actually feel bad for her," Julian scoffed. "She is a gold digger, Kyle. You said it yourself. You bet me a hundred thousand dollars you could make her drop her morals. You bought her a few nice dinners, played the hero, and she crawled right into your bed. You proved your point."

The world tilted violently beneath my feet.

A bet.

Every sudden shift in his behavior, the hot meals, the rescue with the horse, the tender kiss in the media room last night—it wasn't a breakthrough. It wasn't him finally seeing me. It was a calculated, thirty-day game designed to force my dependence and humiliate me. He had weaponized my trauma and my isolation just to prove a point to his wealthy friends.

The terrifying realization that I had actually fallen in love with him shattered in my chest, replaced instantly by a blinding, agonizing rage.

"I said shut up!" Kyle roared inside the office. "I am not dropping her. If you ever mention that bet again, I will personally dismantle your family's hedge fund. Now get out of my office."

I did not wait for Julian to reach the exit. I kicked the heavy mahogany doors wide open.

The heavy wood slammed against the interior walls with a deafening crack. Julian jumped backward, spilling his scotch onto the Persian rug. Kyle stood behind his massive desk, his dark eyes widening in absolute horror as he saw me standing in the doorway.

"Ivy," Kyle breathed, the color draining instantly from his sharp face.

I walked straight across the room. A silver pitcher of ice water sat on his desk next to his keyboard. I grabbed the handle, raised the pitcher, and hurled the freezing water directly into Kyle's face.

The ice cubes struck his cheekbones. Water soaked his dark hair, dripping down his jaw and ruining his pristine white shirt. He did not flinch, nor did he try to wipe the water away. He just stared at me, his chest heaving with panic.

"Get out," I ordered Julian, keeping my eyes locked entirely on Kyle.

Julian scrambled past me without a single word, pulling the heavy doors shut behind him.

"Ivy, I can explain," Kyle started, taking a desperate step around the desk.

"You can explain why HarborPoint Logistics created a senior executive role for me out of thin air?" I interrupted, slamming my folded employment contract onto his wet desk. "You can explain how you used your investment leverage to build me a fake job just to keep me trapped on your payroll?"

Kyle stopped, his jaw tightening as he looked at the contract. "I was protecting you. Eric humiliated you in my lobby. I could not let you wander the city without income and security."

"You did not give me security, Kyle. You gave me a cage," I shot back, my voice vibrating with sheer disgust.

I pulled my phone from my coat pocket, opened the video file I had recorded, and shoved the screen directly into his chest.

Kyle caught the phone instinctively. He looked down at the glowing screen.

The high-definition footage played clearly. Cecilia sat at the outdoor cafe, smiling as she handed the thick, cash-filled manila envelope across the table to the scarred loan shark from the underground club. The audio filtered through the quiet office, capturing Cecilia’s venomous instruction to keep the pressure on me.

Kyle stopped breathing. His dark eyes darted across the screen, tracking the scarred man. The realization hit him with physical force. His broad shoulders slumped, and a look of profound, agonizing betrayal washed over his face.

"She paid them," Kyle whispered, his voice completely hollow. "She funded the men hunting you."

"Your perfect childhood best friend," I mocked coldly, tears of sheer fury burning my eyes. "The woman who belongs in your elite world. She engineered my nightmare while you were busy playing puppet master with my career."

Kyle dropped the phone onto the desk. He looked at me, his eyes shining with a frantic, desperate panic. He closed the distance between us, grabbing my wrists. His hands were shaking.

"Ivy, I swear to God, I did not know about the loans," Kyle pleaded, his voice breaking. He dropped to his knees, pressing his forehead against my hands. It was an astonishing, absolute surrender from a man who bowed to no one. "I will destroy her for this. I will fix everything. Please, just let me protect you. I love you."

I looked down at the powerful billionaire kneeling on the carpet. A day ago, that confession would have healed every broken part of me. Today, it was the final, twisting blade.

I pulled my hands out of his grasp and took a deliberate step backward.

"You don't love me, Kyle. You love the fact that you won," I whispered, my voice thick with absolute devastation.

Kyle looked up, confusion mixing with the heartbreak on his face. "What are you talking about? The bet meant nothing."

"It meant everything!" I yelled, a single tear spilling hot down my cheek. "You spent twenty-nine days using my fears, my mother, and my father's memory to trick me into trusting you. And the worst part is, it worked. You wanted to prove I was just another gold digger who would fall for your money and your fake protection. Well, congratulations, Kyle. You won the bet. I actually fell for you."

Kyle remained on his knees, completely paralyzed. A raw, devastated tear spilled over his dark eyelashes as the gravity of what he had destroyed finally hit him.

"But I am keeping the last piece of my pride," I said, grabbing my phone off his desk. "I am done with you."

I turned my back on him and walked toward the exit, my boots snapping sharply against the hardwood floor.

"Ivy, wait!" Kyle roared, scrambling to his feet, the sound tearing violently from his throat. "Marcus! Lock down the floor! Do not let her leave!"

I shoved the heavy doors open and sprinted into the reception area. The receptionist lunged for the security panel, but I was faster. I slammed my hand against the elevator call button. The steel doors slid open instantly. I threw myself inside and hit the lobby button, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.

Kyle burst out of his office, his wet shirt clinging to his chest, his eyes wild with absolute desperation.

"Ivy!" he screamed, lunging across the lobby toward the closing doors.

He reached his hand out, his fingertips brushing the cold steel just as the elevator doors snapped shut, sealing me safely inside and leaving him trapped with the wreckage of his own arrogant game.
