Chapter 1

I thought nothing could hurt more than watching the man I trusted for seven years wrap his arms around another she-wolf. But I was wrong.

I left Russell behind, bleeding silently, hoping the mountains would quiet the storm inside me. Instead, I met Alpha Jaxton—my best friend's brother, a man whose power shook the ground when he walked and whose scent made my wolf stir in ways I didn't understand.

He was supposed to be protection. Temporary.

But one night, his touch silenced the ache. His kiss awoke something ancient. And when our wolves howled as one beneath the moon, I knew—I had found my true mate.

Then I heard him say it.

"She's not my mate. I feel nothing for her."

His words broke something deeper than betrayal. They shattered a bond not yet born.

So I ran. Into the darkness. Into the forest.

And I fell.

Now, I'm lying somewhere between life and death, haunted by the scent of a bond that should never have been.

Was I just a mistake to him?

Or is something far more dangerous unfolding beneath the surface of our pack's fragile peace?

I don't know who to trust anymore.

But I do know this—when an Alpha lies, the consequences are written in blood.

...

The scent hit me like a slap—Russell's musk, now tainted with something sweet and brazen that didn't belong to me. My feet froze just outside the café's back hallway, heart pounding, instincts screaming. I turned the corner.

There he was.

My mate of seven years. His arms around another she-wolf. Her lips inches from his. Her scent—ripe with want and territory—clung to his shirt like a claim.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Seven years of loyalty, of shared hunts and promises beneath the full moon, unraveled in a single heartbeat. My wolf snarled inside me, rage and disbelief colliding like a storm. But I didn't shift. Not here. Not in front of the pack. That would be weakness. That would be surrender.

His gaze caught mine. Widened. Guilt flickered—but not enough. Not enough to erase what I saw. What I smelled. What I felt fracture deep within me.

I turned away, spine straight, face frozen in a Beta's controlled mask. We don't fall apart in public. We endure. We lead, even through heartbreak.

Back at the table, the laughter quieted into tense silence. My packmates sensed it—my pain, my fury—though none dared ask. Cameron, ever my anchor, reached under the table to grip my hand.

"You're shaking," she whispered.

"I'm fine," I lied, and my voice didn't tremble. That was something.

Cameron didn't push. Instead, she leaned in, her eyes serious. "Gianna. Let's get out of here. You don't need to stay and bleed in front of him. The Alps. Just us for the weekend."

The idea tugged at me—cold air, distance, silence. Time to rebuild what Russell had shattered.

"There's a pack training camp up there," she added. "My brother's leading."

Jaxton.

The name alone stirred something wary in me. Alpha Jaxton was infamous in our region: powerful, dominant, dangerously charismatic. His wolf had taken down a rogue line by himself. Some said he could bend betas to their knees with a single growl.

And yet… Alphas protect their own.

I nodded. "Let's go."

That night, I walked home alone. The moon hung low, casting silver shadows across the trees. My wolf paced beneath my skin, unsteady. Hurt. Betrayed.

The bond was fading. I could feel the threads snapping, one by one. Betrayal severs faster than time.

I closed my eyes, inhaling the night air, trying to cleanse myself.

Then I smelled it.

New. Unfamiliar. Pine needles soaked in rain. Smoke and storm. It wasn't Russell. It wasn't anyone I'd ever known. But it called to something inside me—low and ancient. My wolf fell silent, ears perked.

Curious. Alert.

I spun, eyes scanning the forest.

Nothing.

But the scent lingered.

The bond with Russell was failing, but something else had awakened.

Something stronger.

Something waiting.

Chapter 2

The air in the mountains was different—sharper, wilder. It bit against my skin as we climbed, cutting through the layers I wore like it wanted to test my strength. Behind me, the crunch of boots in snow told me Jaxton had caught up.

His scent reached me before he did. Earth and ironwood. Power and control. It slid down my spine like a whisper, making my wolf stir restlessly.

I hated that.

He wasn't even trying, yet my body reacted. My wolf reacted. I clenched my jaw and kept walking.

"You alright?" he asked, voice low, gravelly. Alpha-deep.

I nodded. "Fine."

Liar.

He fell into step beside me, his presence too large, too warm. The others followed behind, but all I could feel was him—like the air bent around his will. My Beta instincts screamed to keep distance, to stay alert. But my wolf… she leaned forward, curious.

Traitor.

Night fell quickly among the trees. Cameron pitched my tent while Jaxton set up the perimeter. I tried to ignore how easily he moved, how his muscles flexed under his dark shirt as he secured the boundaries with sharpened poles soaked in wolfsbane ash.

"Don't wander tonight," he warned me as I passed. "There've been rogue sightings."

"Wasn't planning on it," I muttered, brushing past him.

But his hand, just for an instant, grazed my arm.

A jolt. Heat. Static. My wolf gasped.

I pulled away like I'd been burned.

Later, curled up inside my tent, I couldn't sleep. The shadows beyond the fabric shifted with the wind, and my thoughts raced.

Why did his touch feel like that?

Why did my wolf keep pacing, tail twitching, ears perked?

I had just lost Russell. I should feel broken, numb. Not… this.

I sat up, heart pounding. The cold pressed in. My breath fogged in the air.

I needed air.

I slipped out of the tent, hugging my coat tighter. A few steps into the trees, I realized I wasn't alone. A silhouette moved to my left—Jaxton. Alone, quiet, alert. His wolf close to the surface.

He turned, eyes catching mine. Silver gleamed in his irises.

"You shouldn't be out here."

"I couldn't sleep."

He didn't move. Neither did I.

Then he unzipped his coat and held it out. "You're freezing."

I hesitated. Took it. The warmth of his body still clung to the inside.

"Thanks," I murmured.

He nodded, then pulled a protein bar from his pocket and handed it to me. "Eat."

"You always this bossy?"

A smirk tugged at his mouth. "Only when Betas forget to take care of themselves."

I could've laughed. I didn't.

Instead, I followed him back to camp. My tent loomed ahead. But in the darkness, I misstepped—tripped on a root—and went sprawling.

Strong hands caught me.

Not rough. Not too close. Just… steady.

"Careful," he said.

And gods help me, I didn't pull away right away.

His scent was overwhelming, something primal curling in my chest. My wolf pressed forward, her heartbeat syncing with his.

I yanked back. "Sorry."

"You okay?"

"Yeah. Just tired."

I ducked into my tent, cheeks burning. But in the dark, nothing felt safe. My wolf still paced.

I climbed out again, confused, and stumbled into the next tent—his. I meant to back out, but his scent hit me hard, and something inside me… settled.

He was already lying down, shirtless. His eyes opened slowly, not surprised.

"Couldn't sleep either?"

I didn't answer. I just stood there, frozen, torn between dignity and instinct.

"Stay," he said simply.

Not a command. Not an order. Just a quiet offer.

I sank down beside him. Not touching. Not speaking.

And yet… the space between us hummed. My wolf curled up inside me, calm for the first time in days.

I didn't remember falling asleep.

But I dreamed.

I was running—silver fur under moonlight. And beside me, a shadow. Black fur. Alpha power. His eyes.

When I woke, I was curled beside Jaxton, our bodies warm from shared heat.

His arm was draped protectively over me.

I froze.

Then I looked up—and met his eyes.

Something flickered there. Confusion. Possession. Hunger.

And then… he pulled away.

No words. Just space.

My heart thudded painfully. Had I crossed a line?

But before I could speak, a low growl rumbled from deep in the forest, distant but clear.

Rogue.

Jaxton sat up instantly, eyes glowing.

"Stay here," he said.

But my wolf rose with his.

We both heard it.

The call of danger. The whisper of blood.

And underneath it all… something else.

A second heartbeat echoing my own.

Chapter 3

We were halfway up the ridge when the scent hit me.

Russell.

Sharp. Bitter. Familiar in the worst way. Twisted now, corrupted by alcohol and something else—something feral.

I stiffened.

Then I saw him.

His car blocked the narrow trail ahead, parked sideways like a challenge. Leaning against it, arms crossed, stood Russell. And at his side, clinging to him like a shadow, was Elsie—the she-wolf from that night. Her smirk was pure poison.

"Well, look who's crawling back," Russell sneered.

I said nothing.

He stepped forward. "You think you can just run into the mountains with an Alpha and pretend we didn't mean anything?"

My wolf growled low in my chest. The air thickened with tension.

Then Jaxton moved.

One step. That was all it took.

The shift in pressure was instant—his Alpha aura surged like a thunderclap, pushing down on everyone present. Russell startled, stumbling back, his bravado crumbling under Jaxton's gaze.

"She's no longer yours," Jaxton said, voice level but lethal.

Elsie hissed. "You don't get to decide that."

Jaxton's eyes flicked to her, and she flinched.

My heart pounded. Every instinct screamed to get away, but my wolf stood tall—drawn to Jaxton's power, his protection. My knees trembled, not from fear, but from the pull of something ancient.

Then it happened.

His scent—pine smoke and storm—hit me like a tidal wave.

And under it… a shift.

My wolf froze. Then howled.

I gasped, clutching my chest.

No. No, no, no.

The mate bond.

It was forming.

I staggered back, heart racing. My skin burned. My senses exploded. His scent became everything.

Jaxton turned to me, eyes wide.

"You feel it too," he said quietly.

I couldn't speak.

Because yes—I felt it. The thread of fate pulling us together. My wolf reaching for his. Every heartbeat syncing. Every breath anchoring me to him.

He stepped closer.

"Gianna…"

And then—his lips touched mine.

The kiss was fire. Lightning. A collision of souls.

And in that moment, the scent of the bond bloomed in the air around us—spice, ozone, and absolute certainty.

We pulled apart, breathless.

Mate.

But before I could speak, I heard it.

His voice.

Distant. From behind a tree.

"…No. I don't feel anything for her. She's not my mate."

My breath caught.

Every nerve in my body screamed. My wolf recoiled. My stomach dropped. What?

I turned—and saw him. Jaxton. Speaking to another packmate. His tone cold. Final.

"She's not mine."

The words shattered through me like claws.

Then I realized—I'd overheard. I wasn't supposed to.

But it didn't matter.

My legs moved before my mind could catch up. I ran. Away from the trail. Away from Jaxton. Away from the truth—or the lie—I couldn't make sense of.

Branches whipped against my skin. Tears blurred my vision. My wolf howled inside me, half-crazed with confusion. Every step felt like I was tearing myself in half.

He kissed me.

He claimed me.

And now he denied me?

I didn't see the ledge.

My foot caught. The world tilted sideways.

Then—air. Just air.

I fell.

Pain exploded. Darkness swallowed me whole.

And as I slipped away, one scent lingered in my mind—Jaxton's.

Not Russell's.

His.

Even in betrayal, my body remembered him.

Even in freefall, my wolf whispered his name.
