Chapter 2

Chloe hesitated, her mind a whirlwind of confusion and suspicion. But under Julian's unwavering gaze, the words just tumbled out. She recited her phone number, the digits feeling like a surrender.

He typed them into his phone, his thumb moving with an efficient grace. As he lowered the phone, the back of his knuckles brushed against her uninjured hand. The contact was fleeting, accidental, but it sent another shiver through her. Her mouth went dry. She could smell the clean, simple scent of laundry detergent on his clothes, a scent that mingled with his own distinct musk.

Her eyes fell to his hands. They were strong, with long, capable fingers, but what caught her attention was the watch on his wrist. It was a simple, classic design, but the dark leather band and the subtle gleam of the steel casing looked expensive. Far too expensive for a building handyman. A seed of doubt began to sprout in her mind.

She looked at his face again, really looked. The sharp angle of his jaw, the straight line of his nose, the way his dark hair fell across his forehead. He was even more striking up close than he had been in the dim light of the bar. There was a familiarity to his features, a nagging sense of having seen him somewhere before, but she couldn't place it.

"I don't even know your name," she managed.

"Julian Sinclair." His thumb brushed once over the bandage, feather-light. Another jolt.

Julian pocketed his phone, then bent down and carefully picked up the broken pieces of her prototype. "I'll be in touch," he said, his voice as neutral as before. He turned and walked to the door.

He paused, holding the door open for her to step out into the hallway so he could close it behind him. As he moved aside, his shoulder brushed against her arm. The contact was like a brand, a searing heat that left her skin tingling.

The moment the door clicked shut, Chloe sagged against it, her heart pounding a frantic, irregular rhythm. The intensity of her reaction to this stranger-this handyman-was terrifying. Was her condition getting worse? Was she losing her mind?

The next morning, she woke up with a throbbing headache and a hand that ached with a dull, persistent pain. She needed coffee. Desperately. Pulling on a pair of old sweatpants and a hoodie, she stumbled out of her apartment and headed for the convenience store on the corner.

Will he call? The thought was an unwelcome intruder. Can he really fix it?

At the entrance to the store, a man was filling the tank of a black Dodge Challenger. The car was a beast, all muscle and raw power. He moved with a fluid, confident economy of motion. Chloe paid him no mind, shuffling inside to the coffee station.

She poured herself the largest size, the bitter aroma a small comfort. But when she got to the counter, she realized with a sinking feeling that she'd left her wallet upstairs.

"I got it."

The low voice behind her made her jump. It was Julian. He was standing right there, holding a bottle of water. Before she could protest, he'd already paid for her coffee.

"Thanks," she mumbled, her face flushing with embarrassment. "I'll pay you back."

"No need. Call it a neighborly gesture," Julian said, his lips twitching with the ghost of a smile.

"Neighbor?" Chloe froze, the coffee cup halfway to her lips.

"Apartment 6B. I just moved in last week." He gestured with his head toward their building. Her apartment was 6A. He lived directly across the hall.

"Then yesterday..." The realization hit her like a physical blow. The noise complaint. The toolbox. It was all a lie. He wasn't a handyman sent by management.

He had been playing her. He lived across the hall, had seen her at the bar, and had used her accident as an excuse to get into her apartment, into her life. What did he want?

Her body tensed, a reflexive retreat. She took a step back, putting distance between them.

Julian's eyes darkened, the hint of amusement gone. "You left in a hurry last night," he said, his voice quiet but carrying a distinct edge. "From the bar."

The bar. The handyman. The neighbor. The pieces clicked into place with sickening clarity. He had seen her at her most desperate, a predator sizing up তার prey. He had seen her messy apartment, her failed project, her raw, undisguised need. He knew everything.

A wave of pure, hot shame washed over her. She felt stripped bare, exposed.

"I don't know what you're talking about," she snapped, grabbing her coffee and turning to leave.

"Your prototype is almost ready," he said to her retreating back. "I'll bring it over tonight."

Chloe didn't look back. She fled, a frantic, panicked escape, and slammed the door of her apartment behind her, the sound echoing in the silent hallway.

Chapter 3

Chloe paced her small living room like a caged animal. There was no way she was opening that door tonight. No way. She would text him. Tell him to keep the prototype, to throw it away. She didn't care. The thought of facing him again, of seeing that knowing look in his eyes, made her stomach churn.

Having made the decision, a fragile sense of control settled over her. She sat at her desk, trying to focus on other work, but his image was burned into her mind. The way he looked at her, the feel of his hand on her wrist. She hated the way her body betrayed her, the way it still craved his proximity even as her mind screamed in protest.

Her phone rang, shattering the tense silence. It was her mother, Brenda. Chloe's entire body went rigid.

"Chloe, baby, I'm in a little trouble," Brenda's voice was a practiced, wheezing sob. The rent was late again. And she'd lost some money playing online poker. Just a few hundred. She needed Chloe to wire it to her, right now.

Chloe closed her eyes, a familiar feeling of suffocation closing in. Her own rent was due in a week. Brenda was a black hole, sucking everything Chloe earned into a vortex of bad debts and broken promises.

"I'll see what I can do," Chloe said, her voice flat.

After hanging up, she checked her bank account. The balance was pathetically low. A cold knot of despair tightened in her chest. She couldn't abandon her mother, not completely. And Leo's medical bills were non-negotiable. She needed money. Now.

The five-thousand-dollar penalty for Mr. Berman's prototype loomed over her like a guillotine. She had to get it back. She had to face Julian.

Just as she was spiraling, another email notification popped up on her phone. It was from Mr. Berman's assistant.

Mr. Berman would like to invite you to a private business dinner tonight to discuss the future of your collaboration. He understands the recent pressures you've been under and is prepared to be very generous. Your attendance would be greatly appreciated.

Chloe's heart began to pound. She knew what "generous" meant. She knew what kind of "business dinner" this was. A follow-up email arrived a moment later.

Subject: Re: Dinner Invitation

Chloe, just to be clear, if tonight goes well, Mr. Berman is prepared to waive the late penalty and offer a $10,000 bonus for your excellent work. He's very impressed with your talent.

Ten thousand dollars. The number danced before her eyes. It was a lifeline. It would solve everything-her rent, Brenda's debt, Leo's next month of care.

Nausea rose in her throat. She scrolled through photos on her phone until she found one of Leo, taken before the accident. He was smiling, his eyes bright with intelligence and life. She would do anything for him. Anything.

She stared at the photo, remembering the way Leo used to ruffle her hair, the steady reassurance of his voice telling her everything would be okay. He had been her anchor, the only person who ever made her feel safe. Now he was lying in a sterile room, trapped in a body that wouldn't move, and she was the only one who could keep him alive. It was just one drink. Just one dinner. She could do this. She would smile, nod, get through it, and then it would be over. Leo would have another month. She would figure out the rest later.

Her fingers trembled as she typed her reply.

I'll be there.

The dinner was at a private club in a part of the city she'd only ever seen in movies. The air smelled of old money and expensive cigars. Chloe wore her only decent dress, a simple black sheath that suddenly felt cheap and inadequate.

Mr. Berman, a portly man with a damp handshake and roaming eyes, greeted her with a little too much enthusiasm. "Chloe! So glad you could make it."

He introduced her to his associate, Mr. Reynolds, a man whose gaze was even more explicit, sliding over her body like a physical touch. She felt like a piece of meat on display.

Chloe tried to steer the conversation toward her design, to the professional reason she was there. She spoke about material innovations, user experience, and market positioning. They weren't listening. They were more interested in filling her wine glass and making thinly veiled, lewd jokes.

"You're a tense one, aren't you?" Mr. Berman said, his hand landing on the small of her back, his fingers pressing into her skin. Her stomach recoiled.

"Come on, Chloe, just one drink with Mr. Reynolds. He's a very important client," Berman urged, his voice taking on a hard edge when she tried to decline another glass of wine.

For the money. For Leo. She forced a tight smile and raised her glass.

Mr. Reynolds patted his fleshy thigh. "Why don't you sit here, honey? It's more comfortable?"

Humiliation, hot and sharp, pricked at the back of her eyes. She felt trapped, cornered. The ten thousand dollars felt like a bribe for her soul. She thought of her brother, lying motionless in that sterile white room. She had to do this. She had to endure.

She took a shaky step forward, her body moving as if through water, preparing to submit.

At that exact moment, the heavy wooden door to the private dining room was thrown open with a deafening bang.
