Chapter 8

The drawing room of the Vale estate had gone the particular kind of quiet that only comes before something breaks. Even the grandfather clock in the corner seemed to hold its swing a half-beat too long, the tick suspended in the cold marble air like a held breath. Elias stood across from me with the late Donna Ferraro's pearls at her throat, the heirlooms my mother had worn to her own husband's funeral, and she wore them the way a thief wears another woman's skin.

"So what if everything used to be yours?" she snapped. Her voice cracked the silence like a glass dropped on stone. "It belongs to me now!"

Her hand moved instinctively to her belly. A claim. A flag planted on stolen ground.

"My child will be the next Vale heir." Her eyes flashed, malice catching the lamplight. "Unlike yours. Your child will be abandoned by his father."

I almost laughed. The sound stayed somewhere behind my ribs, too tired to surface.

"Really?" My voice was calm. Too calm. The kind of calm that came from somewhere far beneath the cold floors of this house, somewhere I had learned to keep myself during the long years of keeping the Family's books while the man whose name they bore drank his inheritance and chased women like her. "You honestly think someone as selfish as Miles would throw away his future heir for a woman?"

Her expression darkened. I watched the certainty falter in her, just at the corner of her painted mouth.

"And honestly, Elias, you can have him." I shrugged, and the movement felt almost free, the way shrugging off a debt feels free. "That unreliable, manipulative coward is all yours."

Her eyes widened. She drew breath to interrupt and I did not give her the room.

"Do you know why Miles's father entrusted me with Family affairs instead of his own son?"

Silence. The good kind, now. The kind I owned.

I answered my own question. "Because Miles wasn't capable."

For years I had carried it. The encrypted ledgers no soldier was permitted to read. The negotiations at neutral ground where a single wrong word started a vendetta that buried sons. The disputes between captains settled in low voices before they ever reached the Commission. The fragile peace between the Families, held together by my hand while Miles wore the ring and called it power.

I looked directly into her eyes. "Who do you think looked after the widows and the children during the territorial conflicts?" The estate had been thick with mourning veils more than once, and it was never Miles who sat with the grieving. "Who watched the neighboring Families and sent soldiers to the line when the threats came? Who kept this Family breathing?"

The answer hung in the air between us, obvious as the blood that hadn't yet been spilled.

Me.

"When I'm gone," I said softly, "all of that becomes yours." I let a thin smile touch my lips. "Good luck."

For the first time, genuine panic flashed across her face. Miles had sold her a glittering future. The estate, the heirlooms, the title of a Don's woman. He had never once mentioned the weight of it. The sleepless nights bent over the books. The sacrifices paid in silence. The endless, grinding responsibility of holding an empire of dangerous men together by sheer will.

"I'd rather free myself from parasites like you," I said, "than spend another day letting you destroy my life."

I rested both hands over my stomach, protective, certain, and I stood.

Elias's mask twisted. Elias's mask. The thing wasn't going the way she had rehearsed it in her head, and a woman like that does not know how to stand still when the script fails her. Her fingers fluttered up toward the pearls at her throat, brushing them as if they could anchor a claim that was never hers, the gesture betraying her the instant the moment got too close to the truth.

"What are you planning?" She stepped forward. "You think I'll believe your innocent act?"

Without warning her hand shot out and seized a fistful of my hair.

Pain exploded across my scalp, white and immediate. "You bitch!" She yanked harder, and my neck snapped back. "What did you say to Miles yesterday? Why did he leave me alone last night?" Her voice cracked, raw with a jealousy she could not govern.

I twisted, trying to pull free, my hands coming up. She shoved me.

It happened too fast for the room to catch it. My heel found nothing. The polished obsidian floor, the floor I had walked a thousand times, tilted and rushed up to meet me. There was no soldier near enough, no hand, nothing between my body and the cold stone but the half-second of falling.

Then impact.

A sickening thud rolled through the silent room and came back off the marble walls. Pain tore through my abdomen, deep and wrong, a pain I knew. For one horrifying second the air would not come. My lungs simply stopped.

Then I saw it.

Blood. A spreading crimson stain blooming across the floor beneath me, dark against the black stone, catching the lamplight the way her stolen pearls had.

My vision blurred instantly.

No. No. Not again.

The nightmare came back whole, the way nightmares do, the first time, the first child I had lost in this house, the same blood, the same cold floor, the same scream waiting in my throat. I looked up.

Elias stood frozen, horror finally cracking through the painted face. For a heartbeat she only stared at what she had done. Then she turned and she ran, her heels striking the marble in a panicked retreat down the hall.

Coward. Monster.

I clutched my stomach with both hands as if I could hold the life inside it by force of will alone. Tears spilled hot down my face. "Help!" My voice broke on the word. "Please, save my baby!" I screamed until my throat felt scraped raw, until the cry seemed to scrape the walls themselves. "Someone help me!"

Shaking so hard I could barely hold it, I dragged my phone from beneath me and dialed Miles. The call connected at once. For my child, I would beg. For my child I would set every shred of pride on the floor beside the blood and crawl through it.

"Miles—"

He didn't let me finish.

"You already caused enough drama yesterday." His voice was sharp, clipped with irritation, a man bothered at his leisure. "And now you're skipping the sit-down too? Stop bothering me while I'm cleaning up your mess."

The line went dead.

He hung up.

I stared at the dark screen, my own blood smeared across it now. The man I had loved my whole life, the man whose Family I had carried on my back through every war and every winter, had just abandoned me again, on a cold floor, bleeding, with his child slipping away inside me.

Then footsteps thundered down the hallway.

"Mrs. Vale!" One of the household soldiers burst through the door and stopped dead. His face went bloodless when he saw the spreading red beneath me. "Oh, my God." He fumbled the radio to his mouth, his hand shaking, all his hard training stripped away. "Get a doctor! Now!" His voice broke high. "And call the Don. Right now!"

The room began to turn around me. Their voices stretched long and went distant, muffled, as if I were sinking beneath water and they were calling down to me from the surface.

"Mrs. Vale, stay awake. Please stay awake!"

I tried. I truly tried. I fixed my eyes on the soldier's white face and I tried to hold on to it. But the pain was a tide and it was too strong, and the darkness was already crawling in from the edges of everything I could see, swallowing the lamplight, the blood, the stolen pearls, all of it.

And just before the dark took me down, one last thought rang through me, cold and clear and absolutely certain. My father's signet ring was heavy on my finger as my hand pressed to my stomach, and I felt it the way you feel a verdict.

If I lose this child, I will go before the Commission myself. I will have this alliance dissolved before the assembled Families. I will erase Miles Vale from my life, root and ring and name, forever.

Then the darkness closed over me and swallowed me whole.
