Chapter 3

Just as Eloise stepped out of the spa, a familiar Rolls-Royce glided to a stop in front of her. The driver, Eleanor's personal chauffeur, respectfully opened the door. "Ma'am, Mrs. James knew you’d come here—it was always your favorite retreat. She would like to see you at the estate."

Eloise knew she couldn't refuse Eleanor. The old woman was the only person in the James family who had ever shown her genuine kindness, a potential ally she couldn't afford to alienate. She got into the car without a word.

The car drove through the gates of the opulent Long Island estate. The James mansion stood like a fortress amidst perfectly manicured gardens. This was the place she had once been forced to call home.

Eleanor James, a formidable woman with sharp eyes and an elegant posture, was waiting at the entrance. The moment she saw Eloise, she rushed forward and pulled her into a warm hug.

"My child, you've suffered," Eleanor said, her eyes welling up. "You're home now. No one will dare bully you again."

Across the grand foyer, another woman watched the scene with a cold, dismissive air. It was Patricia James, Carter's aunt, a woman who had married into the family and had always looked down on Eloise's background.

Patricia held her coffee cup, her voice just loud enough for everyone to hear. "Eleanor, you're too kind. The James family name isn't something that just anyone can be associated with. Especially someone fresh out of... that kind of place."

Her words were a poison dart, freezing the warm atmosphere. The nearby maids stopped their work, their ears perked.

Eloise's heart sank, but her face remained a mask of calm. The ambush had begun.

"Patricia!" Eleanor's voice turned sharp. "Eloise is Carter's wife. She is the lady of this house. Watch your tone!"

"Wife? A woman who branded her husband with the title 'husband of a murderer'?" Patricia sneered, doubling down. "Who knows what kind of people she was with in prison, what kind of filth she's brought back with her."

Eloise gently pulled away from Eleanor's embrace. She took a step forward, her eyes meeting Patricia's directly.

"You're right, Aunt Patricia," she said, her voice quiet but carrying across the silent room. "The James family is a respectable one. My presence here will only cause unnecessary trouble."

Patricia was stunned into silence. She had expected tears, excuses, or anger—not this terrifyingly calm agreement.

Eloise turned to Eleanor and bowed slightly. "Grandmother, thank you for your kindness. But I can't stay. I don't want you or the family to be shamed because of me."

Her words sounded like a surrender, but they were a checkmate. She had positioned herself on the moral high ground, as someone sacrificing herself for the family's reputation.

Eleanor looked at Eloise, her eyes filled with a mixture of pain and admiration. This child was different now.

"I just came to see you, to let you know I'm safe," Eloise continued. "I'll find a place to stay and take care of myself."

With that, she bowed to Eleanor once more, turned, and walked toward the door without a single look back.

Patricia's face turned a shade of crimson. She felt like she had punched a pillow, only to be thrown off balance by the lack of resistance. She wanted to scream, but under Eleanor's icy glare, she couldn't utter a word.

Eloise stepped out of the mansion and back into the Rolls-Royce. "Please take me back to the city, thank you," she told the driver.

As the car pulled away, the driver handed her a small, elegant envelope. "Mrs. James asked me to give this to you privately."

Inside was a sleek black credit card and a handwritten note: "Child, I'm so sorry. Take this. The pin is your birthday. Don't refuse your grandmother."

A flicker of warmth passed through Eloise, but she didn't reply. She tucked the card away. She couldn't depend on anyone.

She leaned back against the plush leather, reflecting on the confrontation. It was a small victory, but it confirmed her transformation. She was no longer a helpless victim.

She needed to settle one more thing before finding a permanent place to disappear.

An idea formed. The penthouse apartment they had used as their marital home. It was one of the properties her mother had left her, though it had been registered under both their names. Carter would surely monitor it soon, but right now, it was the only place she could retrieve her hidden documents and leave him a little "gift."

Back at the James estate, Eleanor summoned the butler. "Get Carter on the phone," she ordered, her voice like ice. "Tell him to get his ass back here. Now."

Patricia sat nervously nearby, realizing she had made a very big mistake.

In the car, Eloise used a prepaid SIM she had kept in her bag to send an anonymous text to a partner at a top law firm.

"I need a divorce agreement. As soon as possible."

She stared out the window. The glittering lights of New York were just a blur. The game of revenge had just begun.
