Chapter 2

But now, it’s clear—he always saw me as a clown performing for him.

Ethan was engrossed in the autopsy room.

To reconstruct how I had been tortured, he had gone two days without sleep.

Only when a headache struck did he stop. At that moment, his phone rang.

It was a call from HR at my workplace.

“Hello, are you Dr. Ethan, Emma’s husband? Emma hasn’t shown up to work for three days. If this continues, we will have to terminate her employment.”

Ethan sneered. “I’m not surprised. She always runs away from her responsibilities. She’s also violent—better fire her before she endangers someone.”

“Could you help us contact her? Her phone isn’t reachable…”

“Sorry, I don’t have time. If she doesn’t show up, just fire her,” he said, adding, “and make sure she’s never rehired to avoid any risk to your staff.”

The call ended.

Just then, Captain Ryan walked over. “Dr. Ethan, maybe you should go home and rest. Take the chance to call your wife. You’re a married couple; mutual understanding is key to longevity.”

Ethan was about to refuse, but the pain in his head made him agree reluctantly.

On the way home, he opened his call log.

At the top was Charlotte’s number, saved as “Darling Charlotte.”

Seeing this, I couldn’t help but scoff at myself. Even amidst this brutal murder case, his thoughts were solely on her.

As for my last call to him—it was three days ago.

That day, Ethan brought Charlotte to our home. He had even called me beforehand to ask when I’d be back.

I had bought a gift to surprise him and told him I’d be working late.

But when I opened the door, I found them kissing passionately in the living room.

Their clothes were half-off, their desires laid bare.

Furious, I rushed to push Charlotte away, but before I could touch her, she stumbled and fell.

Ignoring my questions, Ethan immediately called an ambulance and took her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with a heart condition.

That night, he stormed home, blaming me for her episode. He claimed that my “shock” had triggered her heart attack, nearly killing her.

But he was blind and foolish. I hadn’t even touched her. It was their own entanglement that caused her heart to race.

Angry, I left home that night—and never returned.

As Ethan’s finger hovered over my name in his call log, I held my breath.

Before I died, I had set my phone to send an automatic reply if he called, and I had thrown it into the woods with all my strength.

If the phone wasn’t destroyed, he would know I was dead.

But after a few seconds, he canceled the call and smirked. “Playing hard to get, huh? Let’s see how long you’ll hold out before begging for forgiveness.”

“Even if you kneel before Charlotte, I won’t forgive you.”

I let out a bitter laugh.

He didn’t know—I was already dead.

Even if I wanted to apologize, it was impossible now.

And yet, how dare he act like his infidelity was justified?

He used my heart to save his beloved Charlotte and still thought I’d endlessly grovel for his forgiveness?

Perhaps I had been too forgiving, too accommodating, leaving him with no regard for me at all.

Chapter 3

I angrily questioned him, but he couldn’t hear me.

At this moment, Ethan had arrived at the hospital. I saw Charlotte, who looked pale and frail, lying in a bed.

When Charlotte saw Ethan, her face lit up, and as she reached out her hand, she suddenly fell off the bed, coughing violently.

Seeing this, Ethan immediately rushed over, holding her hand, and without caring about the dirt on her hospital gown from the coughing, he tried to gently lift her back onto the bed.

Watching this scene, even though I knew they were having an affair, I couldn’t help but feel a stab of pain in my heart.

When he was with me, Ethan always criticized me. But now, for her, he acted without hesitation.

I had always thought Ethan had a cleanliness obsession, but it turned out, I was just the wrong person.

Then, Ethan gently wiped the food residue from the corner of Charlotte’s mouth and apologized, “Charlotte, I’m sorry. There’s been a brutal murder case these past few days, and I had to focus all my energy on solving it.”

Charlotte sighed, “Even someone as skilled as you in forensic medicine is struggling, I can’t imagine how brutal it was.”

Hearing this, Ethan didn’t hide anything and told her everything that had happened at the police station.

When she heard that the victim was missing their heart, Charlotte’s hand instinctively moved to her chest.

“Ah Ethan, do you think… could it be my heart?”

Ethan was momentarily stunned before hugging her tightly.

“Charlotte, don’t think too much. There’s no such coincidence in the world. Besides, the heart I obtained was from a legitimate source. It’s impossible for it to belong to the victim.”

Hearing his lies, Charlotte happily nodded, “Mm, if it weren’t for you, I’d already be dead. So, I believe everything you say.”

Ethan nodded gently, his eyes filled with affection. The two of them gazed at each other, lost in each other’s eyes.

At this moment, Charlotte’s face showed a hint of worry.

Ethan asked, “Charlotte, what’s wrong?”

“Ah Ethan, your wife is terrifying. We haven’t seen each other in so long, and when we hugged, she wanted to kill me.”

“Why would you marry someone like that? Will she come after me again?”

Ethan’s expression darkened. “She’s petty and can’t stand me having any interaction with you. But don’t worry, this won’t happen again. I won’t allow anyone to hurt you anymore.”

Charlotte’s face lit up with joy. “Ah Ethan, does that mean...”

Ethan remained silent for a moment. Then, his eyes hardened with resolve as he said, “When she comes back, I’ll divorce her.”

“Really!?” Charlotte’s face was filled with delight.

Ethan lovingly gazed at her and nodded.

The two of them kissed.

Afterwards, he found my number in his call log and deleted it without hesitation.

I was stunned. I never thought he would actually divorce me for Charlotte.

Three years of marriage, and it all ended like this.

But I was already dead. He must be happy now; after all, he didn’t even have to go through the process of divorce.

At that moment, Ethan’s phone suddenly rang.

After comforting Charlotte for a moment, he walked out of the room and answered the call.

On the other end, there was the urgent voice of Captain Ryan Blake from the police station.

“Dr. Song, have you contacted your wife, Emma?”

Hearing my name, Ethan, who had just decided to divorce me, furrowed his brow. “Captain Ryan Blake, this is my personal matter. You...”

Before he could finish, Captain Ryan Blake interrupted him, saying in a serious tone, “I’m not trying to interfere, but just now we found a clue about the victim’s heart.”

“It’s very likely related to your wife, Emma.”
