The sound of running water drifted from the bathroom.
Elsa's pulse hammered. Her gaze darted around the room, desperately searching for something—anything—that would explain how she had ended up here.
She slowly raised the duvet. "Shit," she gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.
The shower went silent.
Elsa scrambled, looking for her gown, but the door swung open before she could find it.
A handsome tall man wearing low-waisted black trousers stepped out. Water droplets still glistened on his broad, sun-kissed shoulders.
"You're awake," his deep voice rumbled through the quiet room.
Elsa nodded and scrambled off the bed, her hands trembling as she looked for where she had tossed her clothes.
"For whatever happened last night...I " She swallowed hard.
Mr. handsome picked up the gown from the bed and handed it to her.
"I... I won't blame you for anything." She took it from him. "Don't worry. I won't ask you to take responsibility... even if something happens."
She grabbed her handbag. Exhaling when she saw the divorce papers still inside.
"So, you're just leaving? After completely ruining my night?"
Elsa froze. "I-I ruined your night?" she stammered.
"You pulled off my tie..." He stepped closer. "You kissed me... and you did a few more entirely unforgettable things."
Elsa's breath hitched.
He leaned in. "...And now you're leaving without breakfast?"
"Huh?"
"Have breakfast before you leave. It's already downstairs." His hand reached for the doorknob. "I don't bite. Go take a shower first, and come down when you're done."
Thud. The door closed.
Why can't I remember anything after taking off my clothes?
But the deep ache between her thighs told her everything she needed to know.
Elsa walked down to the dining room wearing a fitted dress she had found. She wondered who he was. He looked incredibly familiar, but she was certain it wasn't just from last night.
She slipped into the chair across from him.
"Good morning, ma'am," an older man standing at the end of the long table greeted her with a bow.
Elsa pressed her lips together.
"Eat. You skipped dinner last night." The stranger pushed a plate toward her.
She tapped her lap, thinking of a way to ask him what happened without sounding weird.
""I'm sorry if I was too tough on you," he said, watching her carefully.
"What?... No... no, you weren't. I mean..." Elsa cleared her throat. "I can still walk."
The words left her mouth before she could stop them.
Emir looked up at her.
Why did she say that?
She wanted the ground to open and swallow her whole.
"Mmm."
The driver turned away, clearly fighting back a laugh..
The driver turned away, clearly fighting back a laugh.
Elsa lowered her head but nearly choked as the man tilted his head to sip his coffee. Dark hickeys peeked just above the collar of his crisp shirt.
Please don't tell me those were my doing.
Heat rushed to her face.
"I'm sorry if I was difficult," she murmured.
"You weren't," he replied calmly.
Silence settled over the room.
"Have we... actually met before? Before last night?" Elsa tightened her grip on her fork.
His fork froze halfway to his mouth.
He looked at her. "We met yesterday."
That wasn't what Elsa was actually asking.
His phone began to ring sharply on the table. He glanced at the screen before looking back up at her. "My driver will take you back after you finish breakfast."
***
Elsa rested her head against the passenger window, watching the city streets blur past.
Did Dora not take the bait?
"Where am I dropping you, ma'am?" the driver asked as he checked the rearview mirror.
"You can just call me Elsa."
The driver nodded respectfully.
Elsa leaned forward. "Mr..."
"Jason."
"Mr. Jason," Elsa said quietly. "Do you... do you actually know what happened last night... how I...?"
"Oh, last night?" Jason chuckled. "Last night was... unforgettable. To be honest, I didn't expect Mr. Emir..."
"Emir?" Elsa murmured.
"Yes. Mr. Emir saved you from falling off a rooftop bar last night," Jason explained, steering the luxury sedan through traffic. "After that, you followed him straight to his car. You couldn't even tell us your address."
He glanced at her through the rearview mirror.
"I have to admit, I was shocked. Mr. Emir doesn't usually let anyone get close to him, let alone touch him."
"What?"
"I've worked for Mr. Emir for years, Miss Elsa, and I've never seen him bring anyone home. You're the first."
Elsa groaned and bumped her head lightly against the tinted window.
The driver couldn't hold back his laughter.
When the luxury car finally pulled up in front of her apartment complex, Elsa stepped out, bowing her head slightly as the vehicle glided away.
She immediately pulled out her phone, seeing missed calls and messages from Josh:
Where are you? Are you at home?
Elsa locked the phone and walked up to their apartment, unlocking the door.
Her feet froze in the entryway.
Red heels.
A lace bra.
A white shirt.
She stood in front of the couch. There they were—Josh and Dora, tangled under a single sheet in a deep sleep.
They did it... so why did I also sleep with someone?
She snapped a quick photo, then turned on her heels and left the apartment. Standing outside the building, she held her phone to her ear.
Beep... beep...
"Josh..." Elsa said sweetly. "I'm so sorry I didn't come home last night but I'm on my way up right now to make breakfast."
"What?! You're—" Josh panicked, cutting the call.
Elsa smiled. The click of her high heels echoed against the concrete stairs as she reached the door and slowly pushed it open
Elsa walked into the apartment, her gaze sweeping across the room.
"Elsa..." Josh stammered, stepping toward her as sweat broke out across his forehead. "G-good morning."
"Good morning, Josh," Elsa said smoothly, walking past him into the living room, her eyes tracking every corner of the space.
Her gaze caught the slight, unnatural tremor of the heavy curtain by the window. Peeking out from beneath the fabric were her familiar feet.
Dora.
Elsa took a few steps toward the window. "Josh."
"Y-yes?" he answered, sweat pouring down his face now.
"Did you change your perfume?"
"What?" Josh’s eyes nearly popped out of his head. "Yes... yes, I did. Why?"
"Nothing. It’s just nice."
"Oh! Yeah, it's... it's from a friend. A male friend recommended it to me." Josh swallowed hard.
Elsa flashed a bright, pristine smile. "You don't have to explain, Josh. I trust you."
She turned away, leaving the living room. "Let me freshen up so I can prepare breakfast for you."
"You don't have to do that!" Josh called out.
"I have to, I want to make up for last night, Josh."
She walked into the bathroom and washed her hands while hushed whispers and hurried footsteps drifted through the apartment.
Minutes later, she walked into the kitchen and prepared a quiet breakfast.
Josh sat at the small dining table, forcing himself to swallow the food.
Elsa leaned against the counter, watching him chew. "Thank you for trusting me so much." She placed another piece of bread on his plate. "To eat what I prepare so willingly... without ever thinking I might poison you."
Josh's fork stopped halfway to his mouth. "What?"
Elsa suddenly laughed. "Relax. I was only teasing."
But the fear in his eyes told her everything she needed to know.
Josh chuckled nervously, quickly setting his fork down. "Right. You're teasing again."
He pushed his chair back and grabbed his briefcase. "I have to get to the office."
"I actually have some good news to share with you, Josh," Elsa said, watching him as he walked toward the door.
"Let's talk about it when I'm back. I'm already late!" he rushed out, practically throwing the door open and slamming it shut behind him.
Elsa walked over to the window, watching his hurried figure disappear toward the main street.
A small smile touched her lips.
Run while you still can, Josh.
***
Elsa stood on the pavement, her gaze sweeping up the sleek glass facade of the towering Wright Empire skyscraper.
She was finally back after two years.
Nothing had changed.
The grand marble floors still gleamed beneath the morning sunlight. The familiar scent of fresh espresso drifted from the ground-floor café, while sophisticated employees hurried past her, heavy files clutched tightly in their hands.
Three years ago, she had walked into this building as an intern. Through hard work, she had become one of the company's most talented accountants.
Her eyes landed on the silver plaque mounted on the wall.
Accounting and Media Department.
Josh. Dora.
I'm back.
"You stole the financial data, you thief! How could you do that to this company?"
"The first time I saw you, I knew you'd be nothing but a parasite in this empire!"
The cruel voices from her past echoed in her mind.
Then suddenly, the noise of the lobby faded.
Employees lowered their heads and stepped aside, creating a clear path.
"Good morning, sir."
"Good morning, Mr. Wright."
Mr. Wright?
Elsa turned around, lowering her head slightly in greeting.
When she raised her gaze again, her breath caught in her throat.
Emir?
Emir was dressed in a custom-tailored suit that made him look even more intimidating.
The world seemed to tilt.
How was this possible?
The CEO of Wright Empire had been an old man—the same man who had ruled the company when she was forced to leave.
Yet now, the person standing at the top was the stranger from last night.
Emir’s eyes cut through the crowd, locking squarely onto her frozen figure. He headed directly toward her.
No...
The heavy portfolio folder slipped from Elsa's fingers, hitting the floor as papers scattered around her shoes.
The entire lobby seemed to hold its breath as the CEO of Wright Empire calmly bent down and gathered the fallen papers.
He straightened and held the folder out to her.
"Be careful... Miss Gale," Emir murmured.
"Thank you, Mr. Emir," Elsa whispered.
Her heart hammered as her fingers brushed against his while taking the folder back.
Then Elsa blinked and looked past his broad shoulder.
Josh stood there.
His gaze was fixed on her—and on the man standing in front of her.
Emir followed her gaze, his sharp blue eyes landing on Josh, his jaw tightened before he walked past Elsa.
Josh could only stare back, his knuckles whitening as his grip tightened around his briefcase.
"Good morning, Mr. Wright," a silky voice interrupted.
Elsa stopped breathing... That voice.
Mr. Vincent—one of the very executives who had ruined her life here.
Mr. Vincent stepped forward to greet the CEO, his gaze sweeping across the lobby. Elsa quickly turned her entire body away.
"Mr. Wright," Vincent called out again with a wide smile as he extended his hand. "I have been waiting for you."
Emir stared at the hand.
His fingers twitched slightly before he slowly slipped his hand into his trousers pocket.
"Mr. Vincent... you must have waited a long time. Let's not keep the board waiting," Jason interjected, stepping in to shake the executive's hand instead.
Emir glanced at Elsa before turning back to Mr. Vincent.
"Let's go," Emir commanded, his hand remaining tucked in his pocket.
Elsa felt her chest heaving, struggling to pull air into her lungs.
A faint glow caught her attention. Elsa glanced down at her arm—the mysterious mark was back, blinking faintly.
Her heart tightened. Another mystery she didn't have time to solve.
Then she noticed Josh taking a step toward her.
Not now.
She turned on her heel and walked toward her department, refusing to let him see the confusion on her face.
"OMG! My queen!" a dramatic voice echoed across the quiet office.
Elsa looked up and smiled.
Marcus, her former colleague, was grinning from ear to ear.
"Babe, you're back! I missed you so much! I knew you'd come back one day."
As the department's undisputed gossip king, Marcus lived and breathed corporate drama.
"So..." He leaned in close. "Are we fighting back?"
Elsa blinked. "What...?"
Marcus let out a loud laugh, waving his hand dismissively. "Oh, please. I need you to! This place has been way too boring without you."
Josh walked up to Elsa.
"Follow me," he muttered under his breath, turning toward the stairwell—their usual meeting spot.
Elsa followed him.
"Elsa, what are you doing here?!" Josh grabbed her arm the moment the door swung shut.
"You're hurting me," Elsa whispered as she wrenched her arm out of his grip and took a step back.
"What the hell are you doing here... didn't we already talk about this?!" he hissed.
"Calm down, Josh," Elsa said smoothly. "I told you yesterday that I wanted to share something important, but you said we’d talk tonight. I just thought it would be best to surprise you."
"A surprise?!" Josh ran a stressed hand through his hair. "Is this really your idea of a surprise?!"
A heavy silence fell over the stairwell.
"Am I really that embarrassing to you, Josh?" Elsa asked softly.
Josh let out a sigh and stepped closer. "Elsa..." He reached out to hold her hands. "I was just caught off guard. You know I'm only trying to protect you from what happened back then."
Elsa looked directly into his eyes. "Then tell everyone."
"What?" Josh blinked.
"Let's go out there right now and tell everyone that we're married," Elsa whispered.
"Elsa... you—"
Before he could pull away, Elsa grabbed his arm and dragged him straight back out into the open office.
Dora looked up instantly from her computer, her eyes widening in horror.
"Everyone! Please, give us a moment," Elsa called out, her voice ringing clearly across the entire room.
Every single head in the department turned toward them. The room fell dead silent.
"Elsa... what the hell are you doing?!" Josh hissed, trying desperately to pull his arm free.
"Tell them, Josh," she said, her eyes never leaving Dora.
Josh remained silent.
"Or should I?"
"Elsa..." Josh whispered.
"No..." she said softly, turning to Dora with a smile.
"Dora will."
