Chapter 4

New York City is nothing like home. The towering buildings, the blinding lights, the endless crowds—I should feel lost in all of this, but the truth is, I’ve been lost long before I stepped foot in this city.

I came here with one goal. Find Liam. Take him back. Make Ethan pay.

But New York is massive, and Ethan is nowhere to be found. I try everything. I go to his old office, only to find out he resigned. I visit places I think he might be, hoping I’ll run into him. I even call every single contact I have, but no one knows where he went. Or maybe they do. They just won’t tell me.

And then Ethan does the one thing that truly crushes me. He blocks me. No calls. No texts. No emails. Nothing. It’s like I never existed.

I sit in a cheap motel room, staring at my phone, my fingers trembling as I try to call him for the hundredth time.

"The number you have dialed is no longer in service."

I throw the phone against the wall. My chest heaves. My heart aches.

I lost my son. I lost my mother. I have nothing.

I don’t know how long I stay in that room. Maybe days. Maybe weeks. The money I brought with me is running out, but I don’t care. I don’t feel anything anymore.

Until I get the message that finally breaks me.

A video. From a number I don’t recognize.

I almost don’t open it—until I see the sender’s name.

Trisha Caldwell.

Ethan’s sister.

My blood runs cold.

I press play. The screen flickers, and then—

Liam.

My beautiful son, sitting on a couch with his favorite stuffed bear. Relief washes over me, but it only lasts a second. Because then I hear it.

"Mommy, can we go to the park?"

Not my voice. Not me.

Olivia.

She smiles, tucking Liam’s hair behind his ear like she’s known him forever. "Of course, baby. Anything for you."

Liam beams at her. At her.

I choke. I press a hand to my mouth, shaking as the video continues. Liam—my son—leans into her, lets her kiss his forehead. Like she’s his real mother.

I let out a strangled scream and hurl the phone across the room. Everything inside me shatters into pieces. Ethan didn’t just take Liam. He erased me from his life completely.

I stumble to the bathroom, gripping the sink as I stare at my reflection. Hollow eyes. Chapped lips. A ghost of the woman I used to be.

I grip my hair, tugging hard, my breath coming out in ragged sobs. "I can’t do this," I whisper. "I can’t—I can’t—"

The walls close in. My legs give out.

And then everything fades to black.

I don’t remember how I end up on the streets. One moment, I’m in that motel. The next, I’m wandering through the city, numb and empty.

The money ran out days ago. I stopped eating. Stopped sleeping. Stopped caring.

I sit on a cold pavement, my arms wrapped around my legs, watching people pass by like I don’t exist. Because I don’t. Not anymore.

"Life is funny, isn’t it?"

The voice comes from beside me. I turn my head slightly and see an old man sitting next to me, his gray beard long, his clothes ragged.

I say nothing.

He chuckles. "You’re young. Pretty. You look like someone who lost everything."

I scoff. "And you look like someone who has nothing to lose."

"Ah, but that’s where you’re wrong," he says, smiling. "I had everything once."

I don’t know why, but I keep listening. Maybe because he’s the first person to talk to me in days. Maybe because I just need someone—anyone—to distract me from the unbearable pain.

He tells me stories. About life, love, betrayal. And I tell him nothing.

Until one night, when I finally break.

"I lost my son," I whisper.

The old man goes silent.

I swallow hard, staring at the empty coffee cup in my hands. "My husband—ex-husband—took him. He… replaced me." The words feel foreign in my mouth, like they belong to someone else.

The old man studies me for a long moment. Then, he pats my shoulder. "You want him back?"

I let out a broken laugh. "What kind of question is that? Of course, I do."

"Then get up."

I blink. "What?"

He gestures at me. "Get up. You won’t get him back by sitting here feeling sorry for yourself."

Anger flares in my chest. "You don’t understand—"

"I understand perfectly," he interrupts, his eyes sharp. "You lost. You’re broken. But you aren’t dead. And as long as you’re breathing, you fight."

Something about his voice—his presence—makes me pause. He’s not just some homeless old man, is he?

Before I can ask, he stands up.

"Come with me."

And for some reason, I do.

***

His house is massive. No. Not a house. A mansion.

I stare in shock as he pushes open the grand doors, revealing a space so luxurious it looks like it belongs in a movie.

I turn to him, baffled. "What the hell—?"

He smirks. "I never said I was actually homeless."

I gape at him.

"Richard Blackwood," he says, extending a hand. "The richest man in America."

My mouth drops open. I know that name. Everyone does.

"But—but—"

He chuckles. "I like to go out and pretend sometimes. It reminds me of what’s real. And sometimes, I meet people like you. People who need help."

I stare at him, unable to process anything.

"Why me?" I whisper.

His smile softens. "Because I see fire in you, Claire. You just need someone to bring it back to life."

I don’t know what to say. For the first time in a long time, I feel something other than pain.

Hope.

"Stay here," he says. "I’ll take care of you. And when you’re strong enough…"

His eyes glint.

"You’ll take back what’s yours."

A slow, burning determination rises in my chest.

I lift my chin, my fingers curling into fists.

Liam.

I’m coming for you.

Chapter 5

For the first time in months, I wake up in a real bed.

Not on the cold, hard pavement.

Not in some dirty alley, curled up with my arms wrapped around myself.

A real bed. With silk sheets and the scent of fresh linen surrounding me.

It almost feels like a dream.

But when I open my eyes, the massive chandelier above me reminds me that this is real. That I’m in Richard Blackwood’s mansion—no longer a homeless, broken woman left to rot in the streets.

I don’t know why he took me in.

I don’t know why he’s helping me.

But I do know one thing—I owe him. And whatever he wants in return, I’ll give it.

***

Richard Blackwood is nothing like I expected.

Despite his age, he carries himself like a king—powerful, untouchable.

He doesn’t speak much unless necessary, but when he does, his words cut through the air with an authority that demands attention.

Today, I sit across from him in his private study, a grand room filled with books, expensive whiskey, and the smell of old money.

"Eat." He nods at the untouched plate in front of me. "You look like a skeleton."

I hesitate, still unused to this kind of treatment. But when my stomach growls, I give in, picking up my fork.

"You remind me of someone," he says after a while, watching me closely.

I pause mid-bite. "Who?"

His lips press together. "Someone I lost. A long time ago."

I don’t push for details. He doesn’t look like the type to spill his emotions easily.

Instead, I set my fork down and meet his gaze. "Why are you helping me?"

His expression doesn’t change. "Because I can."

I frown. "That’s not an answer."

He leans back in his chair, swirling the whiskey in his glass. "What would you rather be doing? Living on the streets? Chasing after a man who doesn’t want to be found?"

His words hit harder than I expect.

I lower my gaze, gripping my lap under the table.

"I just want my son back," I whisper.

Richard nods. "Then we’ll start there."

I look up, my heart pounding. "We?"

"You think you can fight Ethan Caldwell on your own?" He raises a brow. "You’re nothing to him right now. Just a woman he threw away."

I swallow the lump in my throat. "Then what do I do?"

His eyes darken with something unreadable. "You rise, Claire."

I suck in a breath.

"You become someone powerful," he continues. "Someone untouchable. You don’t just fight Ethan—you make him regret ever throwing you away."

I stare at him, my pulse racing.

"And how do I do that?"

A slow smirk curves his lips. "By becoming someone the world can’t ignore."

***

Richard doesn’t just give me a place to stay—he rebuilds me.

Doctors check every inch of me, making sure I recover from the months of malnutrition and neglect.

Stylists fix my hair, my skin, my nails.

Trainers push me to my limits, forcing me to regain the strength I lost.

Every day is a test.

Every moment is a lesson.

Richard makes sure of that.

"You need to control your emotions," he says as I punch the training bag in his private gym. "Right now, you’re still weak. Driven by pain and rage. That won’t win you battles—it’ll make you reckless."

I grit my teeth, throwing another punch. "What do you want me to do? Smile and pretend I’m fine?"

He tilts his head. "No. I want you to channel it. Use it to your advantage. Make it your weapon, not your weakness."

I exhale sharply, stepping back, sweat dripping down my face.

"I want to hurt him," I admit. "I want him to feel everything I felt."

Richard watches me for a long moment.

"Then become someone he’ll never be able to ignore," he says. "You want revenge? Then rise so high that he has no choice but to look up at you."

And so I push myself harder.

Every day. Every night.

Until the weak, broken woman I used to be disappears—replaced by someone stronger.

One evening, as I sit in the lounge, flipping through magazines, Richard enters with someone new.

A tall man.

Dressed in a sharp black suit, his presence demands attention the moment he steps into the room.

His eyes—piercing and observant—lock onto me.

"Claire, meet my grandson," Richard announces. "Lucas Blackwood."

I tense.

I’ve heard that name before.

Lucas Blackwood. The youngest, most sought-after film director in the industry.

The man behind countless award-winning movies.

And Richard’s heir.

Lucas studies me for a moment before speaking. "So you’re the one my grandfather’s been obsessing over."

I blink. "I… what?"

Richard smirks, sipping his whiskey. "I don’t obsess."

Lucas scoffs but doesn’t argue. Instead, he turns back to me. "He says you’ve got potential."

I straighten. "Potential for what?"

He slides his hands into his pockets. "For something big."

I frown. "I don’t understand."

Lucas tilts his head. "You want to take Ethan down, right?"

I stiffen.

Richard leans forward, resting his elbows on the armrest. "Then you need influence. Power. Something that makes you untouchable."

I glance between them, my heart racing.

"And what exactly are you suggesting?"

Lucas smirks.

"How about becoming a star?"

I blink. "A… star?"

He nods. "The entertainment industry is ruthless. But it’s also the fastest way to rise to power. Become a name everyone knows, and suddenly, Ethan Caldwell won’t just see you as a bitter ex—he’ll see you as a threat."

I stare at him, my mind spinning.

Me? In the entertainment industry?

It sounds ridiculous. Impossible.

But then I remember—

The way Ethan dismissed me. The way he replaced me. The way my son called another woman Mommy.

And suddenly… it doesn’t seem so impossible.

Richard watches me closely. "So, Claire… do you want to remain in the shadows?"

Lucas crosses his arms, his smirk never fading. "Or do you want to become the woman Ethan regrets losing for the rest of his life?"

I take a slow, deep breath.

The old Claire—the one who cried, who begged, who was discarded like trash—no longer exists.

I lift my chin, meeting Lucas’s gaze head-on.

"Where do I start?"

Richard chuckles. "Now that’s the right question."

And just like that—

The rise of Claire Caldwell begins.
